    You are wrong about him being the only Olympic and Paralympic medalist. Randy Snow USA accomplished this too with a Silver in the 84 Olympics and a Gold in the 92 Paras.

    • @voxathletica
      @voxathletica 3 часа назад

      His wheelchair event was added at the 1984 Olympics as an exhibition event, it was not a proper medal event and the IOC doesn't count it as a true Olympic medal. But more importantly, what I said in the video was that Szekeres was the only person to win an Olympic medal, become injured, and then win a Paralympic medal. That doesn't apply to Randy Snow. Even still, Randy Snow is a brilliant athlete and more than deserving of recognition! Thanks for checking out the video.

    Suggestion for a video: Athletes who represented three or more countries. A few examples: - Allison Reed, figure skating: born in the US to a Japanese mother, Reed represented Georgia at the 2010 Winter Olympics because that was her then skating partner's country and she was given a Georgian passport. Due to partnerships changes, she then represented Israel and later Lithuania for whom she won a bronze medal at this year's championships. She couldn't get Lithuanian citizenship on time for the 2022 Winter Olympics, but she's planning to end her career at the 2026 Winter Olympics representing that country. - Yamilé Aldama, triple jump: Cuban-born Aldama defected to England, but due to her process to earn British citizenship taking too long and unable to properly compete being nationless, in 2004 she agreed to compete for Sudan, the country she represented at the 2004 and 2008 Olympics. Finally Aldama got British citizenship in 2010, and in time to represent GB at the 2012 Olympics (also winning the world indoor title that year at age 39!) - Connor O'Brien, alpine skiing: born in Canada and raised in the US, due to the tough rosters of the US and Canadian skiing teams, O'Brien decided to compete internationally for Great Britain, due to his father being from Northern Ireland, representing GB at the 1984 Winter Olympics. He later retired from the sport and got a job on Wall Street, but decided to go back to skiing to try to qualify for the 1994 Winter Olympics, which he did, this time representing his mother's birth country: Estonia.

      @@loganrae6342 Chusovitina's case has an asterisk because Uzbekistan was in the territory covered by the 1992 Unified Team and had she won an individual medal, the Uzbekistan flag would be raised at the podium. The same asterisk applies to other 1992 Unified Team athletes like the archers Natalia Valeeva (EUN > Moldova > Italy) and Khatuna Lorig (EUN > Georgia > USA). Having said that, Chusovitina's history and her legacy in gymnastics are amazing so I agree that she should be included.

  • @paulojrneto
    @paulojrneto 2 дня назад

    The main reason that, unlike the Paralympic Games, Macau and Faroe Islands cannot participate in the Olympics is due to the rule instated by the Olympic Charter in 1996 that a new country must be recognized by the UN and international community for it to take part. However, the ten dependent territories that were already competing independently at the Olympics were allowed to continue to do so: Puerto Rico, Guam, American Samoa, Virgin Islands (US territories), Bermuda, British Virgin Islands, Cayman Islands (British Overseas Territories), Aruba (constituent country of the Kingdom Of Netherlands), the Cook Islands (territory under New Zealand jurisdictuon) and Hong Kong (Special Admnistrative Region of China). That was also the case of Netherlands Antilles (who even won a medal at the 1988 Olympics) until their dissolution in 2010. Unfortunately, Macau and Faroe Islands didn't get to have their NOCs recognized before that rule change and cannot compete independently at the Olympics unless they get total autonomy and internationally recognized independence. (Macau does compete separately at the Asian Games, as their NOC is recognized by the Olympic Council of Asia.)

    • @voxathletica
      @voxathletica 3 дня назад

      Per Wikipedia: From its beginnings in the American counterculture of the late 1960s, ultimate has resisted empowering any referee with rule enforcement. Instead, it relies on the sportsmanship of players and invokes the "spirit of the game" to maintain fair play. Players call their own fouls, and dispute a foul only when they genuinely believe it did not occur. Playing without referees is the norm for league play but has been supplanted in club competition by the use of "observers" or "game advisors" to help in disputes, and the professional league employs empowered referees.

    This is a tough question in my opinion. I agree with most of your arguments. As someone who danced a lot, I am actually missing a dance sport at the Olympics. Ballroom dancing with formations of 8 pairs would fit the best for it imo, but let's come back to Breaking. I would say I know a lot about sport history and the different kinds of ideas/terms/concepts of "sport", people throughout time and countries have. My thought after watching documentaries about Breaking and watching it in Paris 2024, I think this an issue about the different ideas about "sport". There are sports with a specific philosophy and idea behind it, that is just different from the olympic idea(l) of what is meant by the word of "sport". Breaking is one of those. That doesn't make it less valid as a sport or anything else at all. It just fulfills a different idea of sport and that is fine. But that's why it doesn't fit into the Olympics perfectly. It's still compatibale enough to be there, but you are totally right if you say that other sports would fit to the olympic idea (which is a very european, historically english/british idea) of a good sport much better. Breakers themselves debate a lot about, if it's good or bad for their sport to be in the Olympics. A german TV commentator, who is a professional B-Girl herself said that they don't see the Olympics as a part of their movement. They don't see Breaking as a part of the olympic movement as well. They just see it as a great platform to promote this not very olympic-ish culture. This says a lot in my opinion. So Breaking is a nice sport and I am fine with it being at the Olympics, but I tend slightly to say that it would be better for Breaking and better for the Olympics if it is not part of it anymore.

    • @voxathletica
      @voxathletica 3 дня назад

      Thanks for leaving your detailed thoughts, I enjoyed reading them. Even though Breaking has been ruled out for LA 2028, it's a worthwhile discussion to me because it's not just about Breaking; just like you say, it's just as much about what we consider a "sport", which applies to a bunch of different potential events. And it's not just important for any future event to be added to the games, but it also prompts debate on potentially removing events that are currently in the games. While this seems less important, given that the IOC folks have said there is an upper limit to events at the Olympics, anything new has to come at the expense of something coming out, so it all needs to be discussed. Thanks again for checking out the video and leaving your ideas!

  • @finneurovision5775

    1. Your argument with just 12 teams in Handball is invalid. Despite Men's Soccer, in every team sport at the Olympics you have a Maximum of 12 teams. Handball World Cups are held with 32 teams. But you're right that it's basicly Europe and three other countries in the second row, who are competitive. 2. It's a fun video, but I disagree with it's content. In my opinion, the only sports we can debate about excluding from the Olympics are (random order): 1. Boxing (beating your opponent is not sportsmanlike) 2. Breaking (obvious) 3. Weightlifting (it's so boring, has huge doping problems, too many Gold Medals (10), almost no tradition/culture behind it, and who would miss it?) 4. Golf (Top 1 of the list, rich people argument, very bad for environment and almost no movement, most important: it('s vibe) doesn't fit into the Olympics) 5. Cycling Track (too unpopular and too many Gold Medals (12)) 6. BMX Freestyle (For a sport that is meant to be spectacular, it's very unspectacular) 7. Shooting (arguments from video) 8. Sailing (arguments from video, though there is a big difference to motor sports) 9. Teakwondo (for the reasons why it's often debated to be excluded by the IOC) 10. Since Equestrian is removed from Modern Penthathlon (after Paris 2024) (which I am really sad about), it lost it's main part of it's historical olympic meaning, prestige, idea for me. Since it's not popular at all and now lost it's special olympic connection (imo), it can be excluded. 11. Trampolin (same as BMX Freestyle) 12. And maybe Fencing, but it's olympic tradition is huge. 😳 Didn't thought I would be okay with so many Sports being excluded.

      I appreciate your thoughtful and detailed response, thanks for leaving it here in the comments. And I'm totally cool with disagreement on the content, I recognize it's a controversial list and many of the choices won't be popular. But I think it's great that you dropped a few of your own suggestions in there, and of course I'm glad to see a few from your list overlaps with mine! I appreciate you checking out the video and leaving your thoughts

    Shoutout to our neighbors. Malaysia has won golds in the Paralympics, but in the Olympics, they are still on the hunt for their first gold. I do hope they get it in LA28. We (The Philippines) already got our taste of Olympic gold in Tokyo and Paris after almost 100 years.

      India has some incredible athletes but for such a large country (population) you'd think there would be more in all the events. As far as I know india is strongest in weightlifting and some of the combat sports. Of course you do have Neeraj Chopra but it feels like he is an exception. There really should be a lot more like him in the other field events.

    • @creativerse6447
      @creativerse6447 2 дня назад

      @@anubis520 Yes, thank you..but to be honest, the truth lies somewhere in between. We are really good in some sports like Wrestling, Javelin, Badminton ,Shooting, Field Hockey Archery, Cricket, as well as in our indigenous games but the thing is that we excel in them in our own arena, i.e. Asian Games, Cricket WC, Hockey WC, etc but when it comes to Olympics a vast majority of the sports are Euro Centric which is not even popular in India and not even played. And in some others like Boxing, Badminton where we are good, we are outplayed by our European and Central Asian counterparts. This is the main reason we lack here.

    I think Iraq should have been included in this list , they have only a Bronze medal in weightlifting , however in Athens 2004 they came so close to win another Bronze in football ,but they ended 4th !! That was even more amazing achievement as they have been torn by wars for over two decades !! and it would have been the first for an Arab team in the Olympics in any sport ! Eventually Morocco won that very much coveted Bronze of football in Paris 2024 after defeating Egypt ...😶
