I’m in the USA. Had a boyfriend who grew up overseas as his dad was in the military. He told me how more stringent and high quality the driver’s education and driver’s test to get licensed to drive in the UK and European countries was than the USA. I assume the UK now has the same problem we are experiencing here in the USA. The people entering the country illegally also drive illegally without licenses or insurance. They don’t see the need to follow the rules of the road either. Or parking. We were at a public park playing soccer when a knife fight between 2 immigrants broke out as one had parked wherever, not in a parking spot, blocking another’s car in. The police had to be called. But then many of our own youth have been raised believing laws don’t apply to them.
Stopped going to Birmingham about 8 years ago for shopping and entertainment as it`s easier to access and park in towns outside. All this will do is reduce the number of people travelling into the centre closing more shops and restaurants and raising costs for everyone. Birmingham Council is bankrupt, spending multi millions on this is a further waste increasing costs and Council Taxes.
This weird council suicide of the town centre seems like there doing this on purpose, every council seems to be directly trying to end there own towns and city's
I had the misfortune to drive into Birmingham last year with a friend. Neither of us could get over what a horrible place it waa, and I didn't feel safe, in fact I felt quite intimidated by the surroundings. Not to mention we drove into the clean air zone by mistake and once you're on that road you can't turn off. So Birmingham council can ban cars as far as I'm concerned, it won't bother me, as wild horses wouldn't drag me back to that hell hole.

I remember the scene in 'The Posieden Adventure' where the group of survivors we've been with since the films beginning come across another group of survivors heading in the direction that Gene Hackman knows is filling up with water. He pleads with the leader of the other group, and explains how they are destined to die if they continue in that direction, there are a lot of kids in the group, so its really awful. But the glassy eyed leader casually brushes Hackmans advice/ eye witness information aside, and leads his group to a, no doubt, horrific end. It kind of reminds me of our leaders, our elite; our betters.

Truth be told I reckon if they were honest about it all councils are borderline bankrupt. Exactly where does OUR money go? I had the misfortune of getting a tube thr other day, the rolling stock was probably from the 60's or 70's, why? What does our ticket money and Ulez actually go to?

The residents of Birmingham should call the Council and tell them that anyone who supports this idea will be unemployed at the next council election. Before the next elections, the council should scrap all council vehicles to set an example. Then people can make up their minds but I think the Councillors will be sacked. I am always amazed how these Councillors think we work for them as opposed to the other way around.
This will happen all over the UK if Labour gets in. Labour have already said they are going to borrow 25 billion for things exactly like this. This is why Birmingham is getting ahead with the consultations to be first in line for the billions. Remember, they have just declared bankruptcy. Time for everyone to knuckle down, get on with it and vote Reform.
Coventry was the number two car city in the UK making far more vehicles than Oxford! The Rootes Group were the second largest manufacturer in the UK in the 1950's, making Hillman, Humber, Singer & Sunbeam Plus Commer commercials. Then there were Triumph and Jaguar, Daimler & Alvis. Massey Ferguson made all things agricultural too!
Clearly you have never worked on a car production line, or in a body panel press shop, 'decent factory jobs' my a---. My father tried it in 1945, I was obliged to try it in Fremantle in 1968, neither of us 'enjoyed' it or stayed long. Or try one of the long gone sweat shops of the inner city slums turning out the armatures and other components for Joseph Lucas, like my mother in the '50's, not to mention the brass plumbing fittings, locks and the like all being produced in what had once been small terrace houses and back to backs. I was thankfully unsuccessful in an apprenticeship application at one such business in 1958. I'll bet you have never been on the top deck of a bus at 5.30pm packed with female factory workers reeking of suds oil either - from Joseph Lucas, Great King St. Do you know what suds oil is? A trip around the Jewellery Quarter, Hockley etc evinced no pleasant memories for me. And sorry, the products were not 'quality', as evidenced by the complete collapse of English manufacturing viv a vis Germany, or even Italy for example. Britain's industrial base was long under-pinned by its' colonial markets, 'imperial preferences' 'sterling area' trade protectionism and the like, once they disappeared into the dustbin of history so did Britain's industrial 'strength'. The quality of the products on offer could not compete as I experienced in my early years in Aus.where Japanese offerings were clearly superior and rapidly became dominant in the '70's, followed by Taiwan, South Korea and now China. From once being the main manufactures supplier, British products are now barely noticeable, apart from the odd Mini or Rangie. I escaped Brum in 1961 and Uk in 1968. Return trips to visit my mother only served to confirm my decisions and boarding the plane back to Aus was always a relief. Incidentally in 1962 I found that B'ham was known as 'B'wanna Junction' by outsiders - after the film/book? of the time - so its' current governance problems have had a long gestation period.

Ruling class? that's a good one, they're in public office, they're just public servants they don't rule over anything regardless of being in local or national government hence the "consultations" they're supposed to have with the public before they implement something, however we all know they construe wording or push things through in the name of safety because who's going to turn around and say "making things safer is a bad thing" and also these consultations tend to be online only nowadays but try getting onto these consultation sites without there being a problem of some sort that either won't let you log in or is so hard to get to most people just give up, We live in a dictatorship of sorts in this country, when you realise that you should be very very angry, I can't understand why people aren't rioting in the streets to be honest.
It should be pointed out that most of the current blocks of apartments now under construction in the city, are being advertised as having no parking facilities attached to them, that way encouraging, if not forcing, people to use public transport. There is one in the city center with over 400 apartments being built, with NO parking. It seems a way to stick lots of people in a city center, and then you have your ideal 15-minute city ready and waiting.
Luxembourg also encourage people to use public transport. Guess how? Well, I'll say: By keeping taxes low, and by making all public transport totally free.

Geoff I really enjoy your vlogs and truly understand your frustration and despair at the state of much of the UK. My wife and I left Southport up in the North West nearly 20-years ago because the writing was on the wall. The point I want to make is central government’s of both left and right have abandoned any sense of duty or concern for the population of ordinary folk - of whatever persuasion - simply trying to live a decent life. Local authorities have been largely abandoned and central funding reduced massively meaning services and the fabric of our towns and cities end up as they are now. Moreover, local people have lost any sense of hope for themselves, their kids and their communities. In the absence of anyone on high to blame for the state of their lives they don’t look upwards to those who are responsible for all the shit and mayhem, they look at their neighbours. It might sound like sociological claptrap but the old adage ‘treat people like animals…’ sums up why many people behave like animals. The country is shit for too many decent folk and the powers that be don’t give a fig. So please take out your understandable rage, anger and frustration on those bastards in government over the last seventy years or so. Most people, given the opportunity, would and want to live a decent life. As I’ve said love your and Lee’s vlogs.
Hope they can afford too, umm not, also road tax payers should sue each place for the cost of the roads they take away and for freedom of movement in the vehicles weve paid for to use on the roads weve paid for!
Burnham is doing this in Manchester but by stealth. Hes pedestrianised all the streets around the Town hall, the Cathedral and Deansgate with no consultation whatsoever.
Towns and cities are dying. Large supermarkets and shops are popping up on the outskirts where I live and the local town is almost dead nowadays. It was a great town, vibrant and full of life, now it's almost a consistent row of charity, phone, and vape shops with the odd coffee shop thrown in for our non natives to sit outside in large groups and intimidate people.
Apparently, the Council doesn't know they have far bigger problems.... so sad. I was born in Birmingham. Left UK in 1989. How far my wonderful city has fallen. I Now live in Australia.
If you ban cars from cities, people will be forced to shop online for anything they do not wish to tote around while shopping or taking public transit. This will do wonders with tanking the local economy for anything significantly more encumbering than meals and drinks.
I'm glad I grew up in Brum in the 1970's - when you could still drive around the city centre streets, even the little back alleys. You couldn't drag me back there with a chain now.
Not too many years ago I used to drive into the jewellery quarter to dispose of my scrap gold and silver, sometimes up to £15k. I wouldn't have got on a bus with that. So hat bullion dealer would have lost out and so would the many businesses that I would buy from.
Geoff that video is superb. I moved out of Tipton years ago along with many of my relatives. When I’m in the area and other close Towns such as West Bromwich and Oldbury the amount of black and Asian people I see especially behind car windscreens is immense. It’s the people who turn these areas in to toilets. 🤮 Keep up the brilliant work and thank you.
why import people from countries where they have no respect for their own towns and surroundings and expect them to respect ours...? if they arrived from a shit hole, what do people think they are gonna turn things into over here..?
I live near Birmingham but out in the styx, its a real shame as there is a number of great music venues in the city centre which will probably fold as most folks have to travel, when concerts finish after 10pm there would be no way of getting home. Thats Birmingham off the list then, i am sure they will manage without my and many folks money.
You mean "Sticks" originally 'In the woods' a rural area. Styx is the river to Hades (Hell) and although that isn't far off it isn't that bad just yet.
Here on the east coast of Aus, my town council had the brainwave to close the road through the business centre and turn it into a pedestrian plaza. It became a hovel for homeless and gangs, the shops closed down and it was the least likely place normal people wanted to go to. When the council was forced to reopen the road with some shared spaces ,the businesses and people came back and it is now a bustling, friendly and accessible area for both pedestrians and cars. On the scale that Birmingham is planning, the problems will be enormous.
Only managed to find part of the question. But clearly I'd think it would be better to stop the knife crime rather than have a car drive past me. Paramedics were called to treat almost 600 stabbing victims in Birmingham in a single year, alarming new figures can now reveal. City areas were rocked by 588 reported knife attacks in 2022, according to the latest stats
It's not a pointy object problem, it's a criminals being allowed by the government to operate with impunity problem. Funny how law enforcement is always there to protect the "Just Stop Oil" road obstructions though.
Well we know why stabbings are sky high in champions. Full of illegals and their culture. Now Manchester is gone the same way and they are sending the problems to other English Town to spread the crime around. Plymouth has had an influx overnight of those sort . They stand out a mile obviously by the mass increase in certain faces.

Geoff. You said a lot that needs saying and yet there is so much more to say. Thank you for starting the conversation. "Your country needs you". Keep it up.
The only reason to go to a city is because it has shops and entertainment and a buzz. If you restrict access to the city then the number of city-goers will reduce and this produces a death spiral as the falling numbers of visitors results in shop and entertainment venue closures which in turn leads to fewer visitors etc etc.
Geoff !! this is the enrichment we did not ask for !! and i'm crying & screaming on the inside, there seems to be no common sense in government. From a great height the 'proverbial' does fall ;-( god help us!! (i'm not religious) 👍
I went to the School of Jewellery for 3years. I was 16 when I started there. I walked the distance from the train station every day. Would I want to now as a 50 plus white woman, unfortunately no. As for driving in the jewellery quarter now. Google maps tries to send you down roads that are now one way, the wrong way. I’m a born brummie and multiple people have ruined our city.
What about local car related businesses in the city center? There are loads of car garages, body shops, all sorts of car related business that could not operate if cars are banned from the city center. Think about hobbies/artists/musicians how are they going to move heavy equipment in and out of the town. It is just not practical to do that on public transport.
Birmingham can join my list of places that I'll try to avoid visiting (and spending my money in) ever again. The list currently consists of London and Oxford, but others are in the wings ready to be added if they enact similar stupidity. Will I make a difference? Probably not, but it'll make me feel better by having a dig at the ant-car tyrants running the councils who are doing little, if anything, to carry out their proper statuary duties, such as caring for vulnerable children (see recent reports on what was happening in Rochdale).

And putting council tax up 10% lol 😆
Surely there will be a flip side , in greatly reduced revenue from all those parking meters , all the PCN's handed out , less people travelling into the centre, yeah not sure they've really thought this one through..

People like myself who live 25 miles outside of the city no longer come in to shop because of the clean air zone,so this will be the end of the shops and businesses.i assume these people are in the pocket of the likes of Amazon .
But we neeeeeed those immigrants to destroy the value of labor
Yes can confirm this is happening in Wales, they are not from here and drive like noone else on the road.
When they get caught or reported they don't get punished either 😞
Stopped going to Birmingham about 8 years ago for shopping and entertainment as it`s easier to access and park in towns outside. All this will do is reduce the number of people travelling into the centre closing more shops and restaurants and raising costs for everyone. Birmingham Council is bankrupt, spending multi millions on this is a further waste increasing costs and Council Taxes.
This weird council suicide of the town centre seems like there doing this on purpose, every council seems to be directly trying to end there own towns and city's
They want to force businesses out of town so they can use their shops and offices to house more immigrants.

The days of decent factory jobs producing quality products.
I have a hankering for a sunbeam alpine...

This would be the City Council that declared itself bankrupt 🤔
It should be pointed out that most of the current blocks of apartments now under construction in the city, are being advertised as having no parking facilities attached to them, that way encouraging, if not forcing, people to use public transport. There is one in the city center with over 400 apartments being built, with NO parking. It seems a way to stick lots of people in a city center, and then you have your ideal 15-minute city ready and waiting.

Best not to pay, but Richard Vobes explains how it goes to the central fund. That also, incidentally... makes it illegal to pay.

If you ban cars from cities, people will be forced to shop online for anything they do not wish to tote around while shopping or taking public transit. This will do wonders with tanking the local economy for anything significantly more encumbering than meals and drinks.

Even though I don't live in your country, I liked your video. Sometimes the truth is depressing.
Great it was salvageable, maybe there is hope once we reach rock bottom…

The only reason to go to a city is because it has shops and entertainment and a buzz. If you restrict access to the city then the number of city-goers will reduce and this produces a death spiral as the falling numbers of visitors results in shop and entertainment venue closures which in turn leads to fewer visitors etc etc.
