Not that the game has to be historically accurate, but the Hoplite's armour and damage should be about on par with a MaA (or worse) considering the difference in metallurgy quality. They shouldn't deal so much damage while being so tanky when translates to AoE 2. 😁
The quality in metallurgy was optimal in the bronze age, not the same quality as the industrial era but it was good; a dendra panopli with shield can protect you well from swords and spears.
