- I "needed" a weld fixture table and ended up with two! The first one is a complete DIY and the second is a CertiFlat knock-off. If you've ever wondered if you should build or buy a fixture table...this is your video.
Result - DIY around 20 thou max out from flat. PRO - Can't measure it...it's FLAT.

Thanks for sharing. This gives me ideas for the work table I need to make...it won't actually be a welding table, but it needs to be as flat as possible. The serious welding table will have to wait until I build a new garage.

Personally like the home made one. No offense to the CertiFlat table, they are cool but I really liked yours.
The lower table will get more use I think. Lighter to move around. I'll pull out the big one when I need the extra space or want two planes.
I just built one two weeks ago. I used a 1" thick steel sheet and bought a $40 bit for a mag drill. Took a while, but some patients and drilling lube, and after the 100 holes I drilled the bit is still as good as new.
I wish I had a mag drill...I already get complaints about my "DIY" involving "tools" LOL. I can see the advantage of the thicker plate when using my clamps etc.
@@ThrottleStopGarage I was lucky enough to be able to borrow a mag drill. I have to admit that purchasing a 1" thick sheet of steel doesn't mean that you get a 'flat' sheet of steel. The piece I got has 0.025 crown in the center.
I just finally finished my table. I use the annular cutters from the mag drill in my drill press. Works very well.

Any general suggestions on where to go hunting for some of the used machinist tools like you've acquired? Or how to begin looking?/right people to know?
eBay works. That's where I got these large blocks. Most of my machinist tools are used.
alot of us old guys are retireing but there are woodworker swapmeet and have been finding guys there selling machinist tools also check ...toolswapusa.com one in so .calf is soon to be happening again...and there are others midwest and back east
where do you get the fixture pins from etc for it,, wondering what size holes they are and how close can a laser get or do you have to final ream each hole? thx
I designed the table. The common pattern is 5/8" diameter (16 mm) on a 50 mm regular spacing. The laser cut table did not require further reaming. The plasma cut table for sure did require that further step.

Yes - 6 mm. I'd consider going to 10 mm if weight wasn't an issue.
That’s odd… I got a certiflat table and I’m in Vancouver BC. But that was in 2019, maybe they’ve changed their policy? They even gave me a very good shipping quote on it.

Craig, thanks for helping me both learn many new tricks AND get moving again on my ‘64 Riviera pro touring project with that “bit of time every day” plan. Also admitting that while I can do wiring it’s an convienent excuse to not go work on the car when that’s on tap.

Great news...I've been putting in 70 hour weeks for the past few months and am pretty exhausted. Getting some boring design work when I can - I try to never stop. I'm putting together another episode to drop this week. My area of research is remote sensing physics.
I'm a medical physicist by degree but I work for a national security laboratory doing stuff with explosives now. Like telling kids when they ask me how do they get to blow things up for a living... Get good at Math!
Hello, I want to make a purchase and I would like your help....which is better, the milling drill or the pillar drill? I want it more for holes, but I would like it for everything, etc... some people told me the milling drill is not suitable for holes because there is a chance of damage, is that true? What's your advice?

Interesting question. If I had to do it again, I'd buy a Mill/drill rather than the pillar drill I have. They're more flexible and the way the bearings work - are able to handle lateral loads. For this table - doing it the way I did worked fine.

It's just mild steel. 6 mm or 1/4" thick.

Does your brother have more of these? Where abouts in Canada are you? It does suck living in Canada sometimes for all this stuff. It's always a struggle to get stuff. Especially when you see all that is available in the states for cheap. Nice job on the table btw.. looks great
Thanks Bryan - he doesn't...this one was kicking around his shop after he made a run. I'm in Alberta and he's in Manitoba. The struggle is real - many think we're playing it up, but honestly - the number of times I get an online shopping cart loaded and just walk away when the shipping comes up - or companies like Send-Cut-Send (who are trying...) look like the answer to my problems and won't ship to Canada. Local industry with water-jets, laser etc. would really rather not deal with the public. I'm thinking about this as a business when I retire - but maybe it's better by then. My front end has been sitting for over 4 months waiting for the custom parts to get cut/machined. Simple stuff - if I only had the tools/space.
@@ThrottleStopGarage ya I hear ya.. I often look at the shipping as well and think..." This is more than the part costs and is worth". The other reason I wouldn't buy something is when they only offer UPS shipping. UPS is a rip off every time and I have been burned too many times with brokerage fees. Some places are getting better and offering flat rates which is awesome. And other places just suck and wont ship to us.. Not sure why as all the issues are usually experienced by us and not them. It was nice when I was in university in Windsor so I would order to the states and take the 10mims drive across the border. I cant do that now. A cnc plasma table is gonna be my next purchase if I can find a nice used hobby one. I would love a waterjet but I dont want to take out a second mortgage on the house lol. Seems like you are doing alright with what you have. I just recently picked up a mill and lathe and it comes in so handy. Dont know where I would be without them. Still lots of stuff I have to get done elsewhere though. I was prepping for a retirement plan as well....or perhaps a side job. I just find garage and fabricating time so relaxing.
how did you do you sit stand welding table? Can you provide some details. I'm very interested in making a sit stand welding station.
I was given a motorized lift table and I have attached my tables to the top of it.
@@ThrottleStopGarage Would you mind sharing the brand of the motorized lift table, if there is one. I'm currently contemplating converting a sit/stand station (for computers) into a sit / stand welding station. I decided to get a manual crank lift station that I can use a drill with the cycle it up and down. I thought that the welder might cause issues with the electronics of a traditional electric lift sit/stand desk.

The home built table was $200 all in. The pro version is about 3 times that cost.

Nope. You should be fine. My laser cut table was fine...my plasma cut table needed the work.
@@ThrottleStopGarage Do you think I need to specify an an oversized hole to the laser guy? or is 5/8 good enough, - Don't want to have a interference fit, the clamp pegs need a little wiggle room to they cock over and bind

They make ball pins that would allow you to pin one to the other... Maybe you already thought of that and will be in the next episode

Is your brother still having his tables made? I would rather support a little manufacturer than ceriflat anyway. Shipping to and from Canada to the US is allowed, certiflat just chose not to (yes, I'm south of the border)
Unfortunately he's got more work than his company can handle and is no longer having these tables made. I buy USA all the time - happy to support a healthy economy.

He doesn't have anymore and isn't planning on producing more. Plans are for sale on eBay.
How does one find your brother's DXF files, or is it private to avoid being sued from south of the border? :-D

Check out GrabCad as well. There are MANY there with the cad files (which can be turned into DFX files w/ the right software if not there... like Fusion 360 and a hobby license)
if the cost of that block is too much my little machine shop has a small angle plate that would work for like 35,bucks..3" × 3 "1/2× 4 "1/2 its withen .0005 flat n square
Nice. It's not so much the cost of the thing...I can't buy it. Canadian's are used to seeing "not available in Canada" or "won't ship to Canada. " on a lot of things. These tables are one of those things.
Think you were complaining about $9 5/8" stripper bolts...........Grainger (CDA) has them on clearance for 69 cents ea. Check out all the other clearance items and cheap shipping too!
We haven't had a Grainger in a couple of years! I just hate single pack bolts.
@@ThrottleStopGarage Go on line, you can see the clearance items across the country. Have had multiple shipments from across the country for $10 on a single order. From Mt. Pearl N.L. to Burnaby and parts in between.

5/8" and 16mm are not the same size. Nearly everyone says this, but it's wrong. 25.4 x .625 = 15.875mm. When precision is needed, they are not at all the same
Indeed - no question. Approximations in welding are a bad habit.
I'm in Australia & very rarely buy anything from USA because the shipping cost are just a ripoff.
