Their best song. I can't stop talking about this song. And the finesse they play it with. Guys...when "Captain" first came out I had friends over. Just to hear this album. I saved this song for last. Nobody could speak after I had played it. Everybody just sat stunned till it was time to go home. One of my favorite songs of all time...by anyone.

Including their guitarists, they had THE best-Bassists extant.
      Tiran Porter.
      Not only a player also a writer/composer.
And on "MuscMan" no finer than Curtis Mayfield coordinating the horns & strings.
      Ahead of their time?
      Just a wee little bit.
      ROCK ON....
      BRIAN.

Not everyone who claims to be a fan of the Doobie Brothers will know this song. That's how you can tell a true fan and one who just says they are. One of the many greats they recorded. I'll put this up with I Cheat The Hangman and many others. Seeing them play this live is yet another realm.

This song is definitely overlooked. One I return to time after time, appreciating the richness and intricacy of both the original recording and this live version. Probably my favorite of the band's many great songs. I feel fortunate to have seen them live in their prime. Two drum kits still slays me!
And Tom Johnson was Ron Swanson before Nick Offerman ever even dreamed him :)

there exists a bootleg of a radio show they did in 1973 supporting their 'new' album The Captain And Me. Although the recording is pretty bad, the performance is stellar. Tom has Pat lead off with South City Midnight Lady then this and whoa, the thought they walked into WLIR on Long Island and just laid this down is staggering to me. I loved Tom's playing & writing the most but Pat is an undisputed genius imho for this song alone

The all time best drivin' down the road band. In 1973 I wore out at least 10 eight track tapes of this album while trucking along at night. Sleepy while driving? Not a chance when this song plays and kicks into overdrive. One night I was rockin' so wildly while driving that I got pulled over, the cop thought I was having some sort of seizure behind the wheel! Then he laughed and let me go because he said he loved the Doobies too!!

The entire group is so together. You would think they had been in a recording studio all week. Their concerts from this era were tight (too short sometimes).

Very glad to be unearthing this hidden gem. Dual drum sets drove me crazy. Very intricate music. One of the very best of Doobies. What an age to be alive.

One of the best extended jams of all time. I get on my Indian Springfield, crank this up and head through the mountains. No better feeling in the world.

Got to see them do this live in 2023 and it blew me away!!! The word "epic" is usually used for prog rock but this is well worthy of that descriptor.

I can't understand how anyone could dislike this song (or any others). The most complete band ever in talent, depth, songwriting, stage presence, quality of concerts, and the heart and soul they put into everything they do.

I'm not sure they are underrated. They are and always have been one of the bands always in most demand. Hardly any successful bands as theirs.

That is strange, in Arizona (USA) the concerts sell out in a matter of hours.
