  • On September 28, 2024 I hiked to Chasm Lake in Rocky Mountain National Park. Chasm Lake is a such a spectacular high alpine lake. You get stunning views above tree line. Longs Peak towers above everything. You'll get to see Peacock Pool and a couple of waterfalls. This hike begins at the Longs Peak Trailhead. There is limited parking and you may have to park down the road. It's well worth it. There is one section towards the end that is challenging. There have been a number of serious injuries that have happened in this portion of the hike. It's very steep, slick and the rock is unstable. It was a magnificent day and hike! 9 miles and 2552 feet of elevation gain.

Thanks for this video. My son and I, not strong hikers, went up the Long's Peak trail in July and turned around just shy of Chasm Junction, right about where you are at 6:40. It was fun anyway.

Any day spent outside among the mountains is a great day. This is a challenging trail. You hit 10,000 feet in altitude from the start and then it becomes much harder to breath. Lots of breaks to acclimate. Hope you two build many memories together among the peaks.

Thank you so much. There was no wind which made Chasm Lake look like glass. The sun is low on the horizon and didn't light up the lake totally but she was still stunning. Thanks for watching.

Chasm lake has got to be in the top 3 for hikes in the park. Loved it when I saw it last year. Since you do so much hiking, I would love to hear your top hikes of the year at the end of 2024

It's such a magnificent hike. I'm glad you enjoyed it. Gibraltar Lakes, Ptarmigan Lake( That video will come out around November 22), Sky Pond, Ice Lake, Blue, Lake Indian Peaks Wilderness, (That video comes out October 25th.). It's really hard to chose. Each lake is so unique. I love them all.

I hiked to chasm lake at age 10 with my father in 1962, and again in 1979 with my wife. I would love to do it again

Fantastic! Maybe next time you can turn right and head up the boulder field to the Key Hole. You’ll get to see the views from up there but no need to go forward to the narrows and peak Longs

Thank you so much! Yes, I'd like to stand in the Keyhole and look down at the Glacier Gorge below. That would be an awesome view. Thanks for the suggestion.

Crazy that this is less elevation than the ptarmigan lake you just did. Goes to show it’s a sneaky mix of miles, gain, scrambling, exposure and parking that make it difficult or “easy” if that’s a thing in RMNP

You are so right. The hike up to Flattop is 4.5 miles but over 2800 feet of elevation gain. I spend at least an hour or more setting up my camera to film on each hike. I also do photography and the hike to Ptarmigan I had an extra camera to work with. I have 6 videos lined up to publish in the coming weeks, on Friday's. Ptarmigan Lake will be released on November 22, 2024. Thanks for watching.

Love watching your videos. Do you give tours? If no. You should. People would pay you good money to be safe.

Thank you so very much. No, I don't guide hikes. I do help out a lot of people I meet while hiking, especially on the Chasm Lake hike. There is one section that's hard to get up if you have short legs. That's rewarding. I hope to live in Estes Park in the future, then I could work as a trail guide. Thanks for watching!

You sure weren’t alone on that one. But, it’s easy to see why. What a spectacular lake. I love your footage…the colors are always so natural. (I’m curious what you film with?). Plus, great choices in music. Very nice video. Blessings to you guys!

You are always so kind with your comments. Thank you so much. I use a GoPro to film. It's taken a lot of practice but I now feel that I can bring a hike in all it's beauty to those who watch. Blessing to you also.

Beautiful lake. The color of the lake is unreal. Visited Chasm Lake in winter when it’s hard frozen but never in summer/fall. Hope to change that soon. Contrary to popular belief, Longs Peak Keyhole route isn’t that technical. There is one true class3 move out of the Trough. Rest of the route is mostly class 2/2+, and the Narrows isn’t that narrow after the initial section. Maybe after getting a few 13ers and some easier 14ers under your belt you will reconsider Longs :)

Thanks for the support! I was hoping to get my first 14'er this summer but it didn't happen. Other than Longs, they are all so far away from where I live. Maybe next year. Right now, with the sun at a low angle on the horizon, Chasm lake doesn't light up all the way. It is very shadowed. I was lucky that there was no wind that day and I could get great reflections on the lake. Thanks for watching.
