- Is there anything more frightening than a fencer who just walks forward and hits you? Cheung Ka Long (張家朗) of the Hong Kong fencing team, the current Olympic champion does it all the time 😱 Enjoy the spooky halloween hits!

Facts
What Cheung is doing here is exactly what my clubmate usually does to me when I fence him on foil. Being an epeeist, once my initial attack falls short, he can just walk over and casually hit me with a flick. I've yet to find out how to deal with it.
these foilist man, it's crazy stuff
try not stop counter attack feints with the mindset of going for a parry riposte
of course, occasionally throw out the counter attack just to mess with their head too
@@somekid7867 That should work!
In this match against Richard Kruse, it doesn't work as well for Cheung, if you try to copy Kruse you might get some nice ideas:
ruclips.net/video/yimYTSQ0uR4/видео.html
Intentionally fall short on first attack, recover with immediate parry to where he likes to flick
@@arubin226 You love to see it
that last one was legendary, the way he ducked the attack hit one from below
Man was destined to be olympic champion from the beginning
confused; isn't the guy in the topic of the vid the one on the left in the last clip? Cheung Ka? I assume the guy who ducked still got hit; can't really tell from the vid.

0:06 He tapped into Ultra Instinct there for a sec
Cheung fr sometimes seems like he has ultra instinct, like when he won the olympics man that stuff was CRAZY
I heard the music in my head when he started walking 😂😂😂
I don't kniw a damn thing about this sport but from what I _think_ I'm seeing... I feel the casual walk and stance immediately puts the attacker on the defensive, closing in their own reach. The walker also seems to have a better reach because he's upright instead of stanced regularly, so it's harder to judge not just where he'll hit, but what his exact range is once he drops down into an attacking stance again.
Good analysis, there's so many layers to what Cheung is doing he's a very intelligent fencer!
Look also at the lateral movement with his feet, tricky tricky guy
But the upright stance means if he were to immediately attack he would not be able to propel himself as far. He also keeps his blade down to provoke an attack from his opponent, and he relies on his ability to react quickly to do a successful counterattack. It’s a poor time to attack for the opponent because he’s prepared for it, but he would have a difficult time if his opponent were to step away or maybe flèche.
How to deal with menacing walk:
1. Pull out a gun
2. If 1 doesn't work, pull out another gun
Galaxy Brain
And if that fails pull out another
@@cypher2923 And another
how many guns do bro have
@@hojowsammoe*And another*
You can tell that except the last one they are not prepared mentally for the sheer whiplash of seeing their opponent just suddenly walking casually as if they stepped out of the ring or smth.
The battle is psychological instead of physical.
This reminds me of a tactic I'd use against one of my friends: he'd always be super mobile, bouncing back and force and always making you wonder if he'd lunge or not. I found that the best counter was to start fencing incredibly slowly and casually. It totally threw off his rhythm because he couldn't slow his pace to match mine, and would always lunge too early, making for easy touches.
Mind games like that are one of the most enjoyable things about fencing :D
Yeah the strategy part of fencing is really fun!
xd
ugh, he’s doing exactly what my sabre friend is doing to me when I fence him on foil. Idk what to do lol
We have to take a stand to stop these people 😤

Yeah. There needs to be one fencing anime or manga that becomes popular and then will bring people to the sport. As someone who fences and occasionally enjoys an anime and reads manga, it would be great to see how they represent it and how it's drawn. Actually, there is a fencing webtoon called "Infinity" which is pretty good. It's the only fencing comic I've found and I like it a lot. There needs to be more fencing series.
@@bubblekoi3226 That would be absolute gold! Lets hope it happens
0:30 did my Playstation just turn on?

i don't know jack about olympic fencing but what i see is a lefty maneuvering his opponents to the far side of the piste (i.e, further from the viewer) and then walking not just toward his opponent but across the piste too (i.e., nearer to the viewer), thereby sneakily gaining an advantageous angle
You're completely right, the lateral movement by Cheung is key to pulling it off 😁
why can't beekeepers just get along :(
Lol
This man is scarier then me taunting my arrogant opponent to hit me and just doing a insta parry I can never do that
He got the menacing walk
Hong Kong fencers are just on another level of speed! Even Foconi was having trouble there; I thought he ought to have counterattacked the old Italian way 😂
Hong Kong are stronger and stronger, it's great I love it
I read enough " Infinity " to know that that that man is definatly the Protagonist

When he start walking, Dr. Livesey's theme start blasting.

He really said 'i can beat the shit out of you without getting closer'
Did that man just roll a nat 20 on his intimidation check IRL? That one moment you know that you know them but that they have yet to know you, and you know that you have won. My guy straight up hit the SSS rank finishing move. I hope I'm that cold with it some day.
exactly for real
Its NOT the walk. That's the disguise. Its the *sidestep* and sneaking in the riposte from an angle that most parries don't cover. Its a nice trick, but one fraught with danger if you try and pull that stunt again in the same match.
i.e ruclips.net/video/yimYTSQ0uR4/видео.html at 5: 17 against Richard Kruse. He tried it again and again during this match without success and eventually Richard got wise punished him for it. You try funky tricks once.
Very salient points!
Kruse really takes the action apart absolutely clinically in that bout you linked, I miss his fencing now that he's retired
OOF, that was cold as hell! Kruse made that look easy.
Thanks for the link, brother.
Gigachad. So freaking cool.
I really love it when he does this, just walks over and hits 🤩
Clickbait. Didn't see either Oh Sanguk or Oh Eunseok once in this video.
Sometimes I dream about what it would be like to have Oh Sanguk fence foil. Just imagine the highlights 😭
Damn hats off to you guys who do this stuff, I can barely see the swords (no idea what they are called im sorry) and it all happens so quickly. Just a hunch but it feels like majority of it is a mental battle between your opponent, I personally love watching the strategy at play, even if i dont know the rules of the sport.
That's what I really like too! the strategy and tactics 😎
Bruh when a dude just starts powerwalking towards you during a fight you know you're gonna get absolutely SMOKED 😂💀

I'm not a fencer, but I play a lot of fighting games; let me tell you the real life footsies are insane! Sometimes letting your guard down is the best way to bait your opponent into making a mistake.

He has good timing and knows that when you rush into him, his opposition has less control over accuracy and actually made it easier for him to score a point
Prop to Cheung for moving that agile with balls that big
I see the self-defence aspect of the sport is still going strong.

Silver chariot vs silver chariot? Hell yeah
Imagine if he asserted even more dominance by T-posing for 1 second in a match
There is an american guy called Miles Chamley Watson who actually does stuff like that, he'll dab and take a bow too, it's wild
I don't do fencing but I used to do sword sparring in karate and walking at people plain and simple is kind of a good strategy to get in their heads.
The shear treat of his confident walk is what cause his opponents defence to crumble.
Yeah fr that's scaryyyy when someone walks like that to you
Silver chariot from JoJo's was so popular that they made it into a real thing

@@OlympicFoil I was still fairly new to the sport, only a year or so in, he knew he had me beat so much, that he would only accept a point if he called a trick shot before engagement started.
Guy's fool's guard is on point
The Hong Kong team have become so good at fool's guard they've turned it into a science, they are so good at it. In my "work smarter not harder" video the guy is who does the HUGE fools guard is this guys team mate
@@OlympicFoil I trained with Olympians out in Colorado (always felt like I was their warm up & I was always more into HEMA, I keep up with Olympic Fencing though cause it's fun to watch)
I like what you have to say about "Working Smart and not Hard." Often my HEMA peers would use blades up to 40 - 45 inches in length and Florentine even, knowing this I thought it wise to go w/ a more Venetian style blade at 35 inches; tldr this made Fool's Guard a very common go to move for me, as the opponent's longer sword would become a lever under the pressure of my shorter blade's terzo/forte.
hahaha very clever
I fell you when it comes to being a warmup, omg 😫
So I have no real experience in the sport of fencing, but I do have pretty good knowledge in fighting games, and what he's doing reminds me of something. So in fighting games, you can genuinely mess with your opponent by just backing off on your pressure. Since your opponent is expecting you to continue striking, you can just...walk up in throw them in the game. Or in this case, walk up and poke. You're just messing with their anticipation in the end. Cool stuff!
yeah tricky tricky
I love when people do big brain moves instead of just trying to brute force things
I do fencing, I believe it’s pretty hard just like other sports but it’s very fast which can be confusing to people who go on with their daily lives. When I started off fencing I cried blood and tears because I was not quick enough to take down anyone I went against. My reflexes were slow. But I have now improved and I think fencing is usually about reflexes. My opinion. Foil is the hardest one I had been through. Frankly because my weapon had seemed to always hit the leg or head. But Epee is important with defence. I mean all are but defence is not my strongest skill. Keep in mind fencing is not about hurting each other
The jotaro approach for the win
i don't even know what's happening, all i can see is just sjtbakfnsj and then WOOOOOO
accurate hahaha
Bro goes: Yeah I've seen enough to know your ability. *bonk*
Reminds me of that time my opponent just… got down and did a _roll_ towards me. I was so dumbfounded that I didn’t stab him as he was rolling, and didn’t react in time when he got out of the roll and directly into a stab. He hit. I’ll never forget that
Ah yes the Jojo gambit, timeless classic.

I’m very nervous, I’ve always loved the idea of swordsmanship fencing by far being my favourite, and I’ve finally gotten an opportunity to start training at tusk, but I’m so nervous cause I see how small most of the peoples frames are and I’m quite big and overweight with swimmers shoulders, I’m really hoping I’ll be fit for this because I really do admire the sport.
Don't worry! I've known many fencers over the years who not petite by any stretch
Actually the fencing discipline in this video, (foil) is known for having more very thin and often small fencers competing, compared to say epee fencing which is known for how tall and physically strong a lot of the fencers are. For example this match from the world champs you can see the difference: ruclips.net/video/_pnes_sDkus/видео.html&ab_channel=CyrusofChaos not saying you can't do a certain kind of fencing of course, just letting you know that there are a few options you can try out 😃 have fun at tusk!
