I like how they kept the dented up off center helmet🤣
Some pro level pettiness lol
It really was a terrible illustration. Were they really too cheap to hire a real artist?
lol 😂 just noticed that , hahaha , I have not touched this character in the game.
@@SeanLaMontagne pretty sure it was because the american release was unexpected and pretty much in the last few days before release, so capcom only gave the artist 6 HOURS to make the box art, and so that thing was born.
I like that they segmented the bar instead making it a solid line. It gives a slight Classic vibe while still completing embracing how bad it is
I'm afraid that's not exactly it. The reason why Bad Box Art Mega Man looked the way he does was because the artist for the infamous cover was given little to no time to work on the art and wasn't given any source material to work with, nor had he seen the game.
As for his inclusion in Street Fighter x Tekken, Infanue didn't want to include any other version of the character, as Mega Man in fighting games have been done before and wanted "something original". So Yoshinori Ono, producer of the game, suggest the Bad Box Art Mega Man and made him wackier. His appearance being because he's aged since his picture was taken and he's 25 years older. Inafune loved the idea and gave the go-ahead.
The reason why he has a gun? Because he had one in the original box art.
I thought he had a gun because, I dunno, American 😂
@@mosiarmstrong No, not at all. Even then, it's more of a ray gun, like what you'd see in futuristic media. If I had to guess, I'd say the artist was told Mega Man had a "blaster", so that was what he came up with.
@@SaiyanGamer95 you're probably right. I was half being facetious anyway so don't mind me 😅
I feel like what you said and what the video said can both be true at the same time
@anoune5135 Its not. The video is very much incorrect.
I mean in all fairness, the guy who was given the task of drawing Mega Man was given like one night to do it and a half-assed description of the character.
😂😂🎉🎉
Too bad they didn't describe it as: He looks like a ten year old in a blue suit and a blue helmet with an exclamation point on it. He also has a canon on his arm and a red suited dog.
@@GittykittyFunny enough, Rush didn't even come about until Mega Man 3.
thats still no excuse for the terrible artwork, the disproportionate body parts weird angles & hilariously off center helmet & gun
Still awful
Japanese hold no horses for artist who “fixed” art since back then 😂
If you had taken a look, all the Japanese games that were released in America back then, a lot of times, the american game exect would replace the game cover art with something less fun looking, for example Final Fantasy 1, 2, and 4 cove art was replaced with a generic fantasy art and FF4 was called 3 do to FF3 never releasing in America much later
FF4 was ff2 here and FF6 was ff3. Jp 2, 3, and 5 were initially skipped until we got them later.
@MH-ej8fq Thanks for correcting me. It's been a while since I look it up
Nothing was "fixed". The artist behind the infamous box art had little to no time to create the art. Not only that, but he wasn't able to view any source material or play the game.
@@SaiyanGamer95which is another reason why they shouldn’t have touched the cover art lol
Capcom just had to pull this stunt after canceling Mega Man Legends 3, and Mega Man Universe. "You want Megaman? Here you go! Bwahaha!" (Capcom)
Let's not forget Keiji Inafuni got Mega Man Legends 3 canceled by leaving Capcom. Then the man had the nerve to thank the fans for petitioning to uncancel the game like it wasn't his fault.
I still don’t understand what Mega Man Universe was supposed to be
@@gyytgy3330 Megaman Universe was going to be like Mario Maker. You would make and share stages you created online. I think Capcom figured out fans wouldn't need them if they could just make their own stages. So they canceled it.
Actually, the suggestion to include Bad Box Art Mega Man was suggested by Yoshinori Ono, the producer of Street Fighter x Tekken. Inafune didn't want Mega Man in the game because he's already appeared in fighting games before. BBAMM was suggested and made even goofier, which Inafune loved.
Basically, it was because of Inafune himself that BBAMM was added to the game.
He was also going to appear in Mega Man Universe.
@@AlphaProtoNo it's not because of that it's because fans hated how it looked when it was revealed at E3 back in 2010-2011 and apparently it was supposed to have online multiplayer too. Stop spreading misinfos
The artist and capcom staff were ahead of their time
Honestly he was just ill-timed, looking back the idea is pretty fun and mock what everyone dislike but since MegaMan games when from 8 games per year to none in 8 years a character mocking MegaMan was just another nail in the coffin.
Yeah this guy was revealed not too long after Legends 3 was canceled. So it really stung.
@@JohnWilliams-wl9pxyes, but he was planned and added to the game before megaMan legends 3 left early concept
@hydin4805 I know that that why I said revealed, not created
He is built like an NFL lineman. That dude would mess you up 😂
What a beauty. It’s right up there with Dragonball Evolution and Roland Emmerich’s Godzilla.
Also don't forget Saban Moon american adaptation of Sailor Moon
It’s like when Konami and Hudson tried to make an edgy version of Bomberman
He actually is holding a gun in the box art.
The reason why the Box art is so different from the character was because the artist had very little time to draw it and gave it to whoever was in charge of the American Marketing.
@FreeCrack4Hunter Never fails
On the american MM2 boxart he's also holding a gun. Took them till the third game to realize his weapon is built into his arm.
@@griz312 That was very frequent in old videogames box arts:
Cover artists were given an as much detailed as possible description of what they had to draw without knowing the game, or any videogame sometimes.
This resulted too often in cover arts more innacurate than the sense of scale in the Transformers G1.
Megaman's Final Smash in Smash Bros has more love for Megaman in it than Capcom has shown in years.
I get they were throwing shade back and forth but the american drawing isn't fat it's actually pretty proportionate
Rocco man, now that would be something...
It's actually pronounced "rokkuman," not Rocco man.
@@victoriabell9546I mean, let’s just say Rock Man. We aren’t Japanese so we don’t have to pronounce it like we are.
Yeah, he's also featured in Rockman-Chan. Pretty much the usual American Guy tropes depicted by Japanese.

They didn't mock the style. The artist was basically trying blind and under a massive time budget.

@@Green-ader No one was being mocked. There's just a lot of misinformation. The video itself is just straight-up wrong.
How bizzare I like the non American Mega Man better.
At the time, US Execs were very out of touch with the sensibilities of kids.
@@dtesterthey normally are
@@dtesterthey still are.
@@dtester sensibilities? There were no weaboo kids in the 80s dude, the decade of action heroes.
@@desuretard8654 Technically we would be talking about late 80s/90s and we would STILL be seeing bad art work in through out the 32bit generation.
Anyway, the fact there are "weaboo" today is proof that kids in the past would have preferred the quality art from Japan.
Anime is extremely popular now but that isn't because kids are different but rather it is just much more accessible.
It’s crazy to me how he is actually kind of decent in the right hands. There is a very small community of people still playing this game on ps3 and they are amazing
From Rockman to Boulderman
Everyone disrespects American mega man but nobody looks at French mega man
They couldn’t call him “Fat man” cause the last time one went there Nagasaki got incinerated.
Was looking for a comment like this 😂
Ow the edge
Wasn't he made to look weird and nostalgic of old scifi on purpose?
I think there was some sort of art contest to pick to drawing by kids to make it the cover art, they picked the winner right? Nope apparently they picked the loser
The artist was under a massive time crunch; he was given little to no time to make the art, nor was he given any of the source material, let alone able to play the game. That's why the art looks the way it does.
I want him to come back in his own game. And I'm not just saying that because his version of Roll is hot.
You guys need to read Rockman-chan, that manga is really funny.
And yes American boxart megaman appears
It wasn't America. It was just an artist who was told what to draw. He had never seen megaman. You make it sound like all Americans got together and vote for him to look like this.
They even made the yellow part of the helmet goofy ahh like the box art. The shade is real.
The reason he carries a gun in the joke character is because so did he in the art work
damn, last time I was this early I missed my reversal timing
But they called mega man, Rockman in Japan, but in North America we call mega man, mega man in English, this is because some North American and Japanese languge are a little bit confused, and mega man’s name in Japan is rock man to make a reference to his Civilian name, first name, and his real name, rock. Rock light/mega man, is my best friend, no one makes him look like a joke and gets away with it!
He’s not called megaman in Japan, kinda lame that’s a sick name
Not just 2nd amendement, the redraw of megaman has a pistol too.
We need more of him. Shouldn't just be a relic
Really hope everyone involved in approving this awful artwork got fired that shit was atrocious like ain’t no way they looked at the box art and thought it was good
The second game had similar box art! 😂
Allegedly, the U.S. box art of the first game was made on the "11th hour".
The marketing team needed a box art tomorrow.

It's called a power gut. Only truly strong humans have it.
You forgot to mention the part where they pulled this "joke" at a time when there had been no actual new Mega Man games for years, and Capcom had recently announced the cancelation of ones that were supposedly in development.
Actually, it was Inafune himself that gave the go-ahead to include this Mega Man. He didn't want the others in the game because they've already appeared in fighting games before and he wanted something different.

And now I will remain unsubscribed.
I take it that those who mocked japanese art style back then were the Mindy Kaling of their era.

Nobody really mocked the Japanese art style.
They didn't mock the art
For the dude named Rock-Man, he sure is built like a boulder
Both of those 2 characters should definitely meet up one day.
didn't the artist of the box art say he didn't know what he looked like and the other people just said how he looked, or something
USA: *sees anime design* "Fixed."
He wasn't fixed to begin with. The artist was given nothing to work with; no time and no source material, nor was he able to play the game.
I love how they even made the band on his head askew like the original rework art. Was this the first instance of, 'fixing art?'
Literally yesterday I was talking about how misleading NES game covers were . “ I loved Mega all the same !” 🤣
It's funny. because he's unironically one of the best fighters in the game
The day Japan dunked on 'Merica!😂😂
Would you believe me if I told you there's concept art of him being muscular and buff?
Honestly, this mockery is deserved.
America was frkn insecure even for game releases, gad damn.
It's not that serious?
@@l0sts0ul89 No, it's not. Inafune was just tired of seeing Mega Man in fighting games, so he wanted to do something different.
This design kind of reminds me of the pitch Yahtzee Crosshaw had for a Duke Nukem game where it's about Duke entering a world that now considers him a joke and past his time. Like I'm imagining essentially a MegaMan game where he's unfit and out of shape in lue of his complete irrelevance and is called back into action.
Apparently, the reason is because it's been 25 years since his picture was taken and he's aged quite a bit.
I always thought Bad Cover Art Megaman in Tekken Vs Street Fighter was fatter than the actual bad cover art Megaman because he was older and put on some weight. Which means this Megaman is actually organic.
Man, using an X in a title just breeds confusion because it means so many things: Cross, by, multiply, 10. 90s and 0s ruined the X to be Xtreeeeme.
To be fair the American art went way harder
I actually love him. I’m kinda glad it happened like this. Now we got an awesome funny character out of it.
I actually wouldn’t mind of Classic Megaman added yellow to his design for fun.
"96% of you arent subbed" welcome to the YT shorts game sonny.
A lot of people were/are insulted by Mega Man's appearance in SFxTekken, considering it was right on the heels of 4 cancelled Mega Man games. It felt like Capcom was openly mocking one of their star franchises, when really it was supposed to be a loving parody to celebrate the series anniversary. Just came at a really bad time.
If I'm not mistaken the reason why mega Man looks like that on the American cover is because they held a contest and that was drawn by a kid who won. But I'm going off of what I heard not doing any research.
This is the real Megaman.
Love how his helmet is all distorted, since in american art, it is also a mess.
Rex: Why'd they do that for?!
Aria: Because they want anything remotely anime in the US 😞
Rex: RUDE 😒😤
"96 percent of you aren't subscribed yet." You saying that makes me not want to subscribe to your channel.

Bancho: “hmm, what a spirited child.

I hear: “BEAT IT”!
Automatically reported you for terrorism the micro second i heard "subscribe" (makes me puke just having to say the word)
I've always hated American boxart, even the design of the boxes. The boxes and art looked cooler in Japan, as did the console themselves.
I think megaman is a way better name than rockman. I get that rockman is a musical pun and his name is rock but calling him rockman just means there can’t be a rock type robot master. Megaman sounds so unique it’s irreplaceable
The American artist did all the difficult parts to draw very well (hands and face) but failed at the easy parts like helmet and shoulders 😂
The fact they hated anime isnt what irks me.
It’s that they asked the an art class dropout to replace some of the stuff!
Well Japan not everyone wants a child or a sexualized 13 year old on their cover
I invite everyone to compare the box arts of Dragon quest and the localized Dragon Warrior. It's night and day.
My favorite bit about his design is that his helmet is incorrectly alligned
Yeah, the top parts are loose and keep wobbling around whenever he moves. You can even see the portion underneath has slight discoloration, indicating how it's supposed to be.
Sadly, the parody is actually better designed than the original US box art! 😂
The yellow line and emblem on his helmet also not simetrical, copying from american box art 😂
I always did wonder why the box art of the old mega man games looked so weird
The artist was under a time crunch. He also wasn't able to get any source material, nor play the game, so he had little and less to work with.
Very similar to what happened to Ariel for the live action movie of The Little Mermaid
I remember collecting the nes games as a kid and when i finally found a copy of mega man 1 it was a serious WTF moment when i saw the artwork 🤣. At least the American art for part 2 kinda looked right.
*music beats fade in*
“…..America, FnCK YEAH!”
This also happened with "Man Man" in Mega Man: Fully Charged
Mega Man in Captain N was a bit pudgy as well.
He carries a gun because he has a gun in the box art… 🤔
What if fat Mega Man and Mega Man met? What would their reaction be?
If this joke was just a cosmetic skin, a feature to normal Mega-Man design, it probably wouldn't be so bad.
I was pissed at this choice, but I mained him, non the less.
Over 20 years later. 20 years and Capcom had their revenge. Capcom never forgets.
And by the way, I thought hilarious and genius at the time, couldn't understand the outage by some fans.
He's carrying a gun because that was how he was depicted on the horrible box art - has nothing to do with the 2nd Amendment or American's love for guns.
Probably a bit of both (as thats probably why it was there in the first place)
@@purp4168And the blaster itself was likely one of the few pieces of information given to the designer of the American box art of Mega Man in 1987. Given how he appears to be a human instead of a robot, as well as a yellow and blue color, the designer was given no real info on the game, or even allowed to play it.
I love using him in SFXT
I was just playing RE3, he is referenced in a subway poster.
At least he still technically gets the job done lol
I remember this causing a little bit of an outrage when he got released. Fans had been dying for a new MegaMan game for years(still are I think) and when they got this some felt pretty insulted. I think he funny tho
Yet we never got American Mega Man II in a fighting game.
Glad mega man normally don't look like that but fact the usual design Change of Rock man and mega is hair color
Why are you calling him Rocco man? ロックマン translates to Rokku man, but the U is not meant to be prevalent. It's just Rock Man.
Ok but what if we one day get a full on game , like he’s kinda charming in this weird comedy underdog way , out to prove himself XD 😂😂
'Because Second Amendment'
No, because The Box art clearly showed him with a Gun. Concluding that the American Publisher wouldn't think Kids would 'Get' the whole 'Arm Cannon' Thing or get him confused with AstroBoy.
You Know, A lot like Philosopher's / Sorcerer's Stone. It's nothing political, it's just an American Marketing thing.
People, Stop throwing Politics into Everything. Thank You. :)
I like him beacuse he pisses people off, including the devs who made megaman/rockman.
In fact just beacuse I know so many people hate him I'm going to say he's now my favorite charicter of all time lmao.
Actually, Inafune himself added this Mega Man to the game. Though he does admit he didn't like the artwork.
Concept art actually had him be more muscular.
The real insult is Capcom. Not releasing a mega Man game for 8 years but instead giving a character that mocks mega Man in a game he's not affiliated with. We can point fun all we want, but the jokes really on us
