I just left Adobe behind and after looking for substance replacements I remembered there was quixel mixer. It runs absolutely great on my Pop!_OS using Lutris/Wine, running very stable! So I'm pretty sure I just found the solution I'm going with in the future!! Nice overview over most I wanted to know! Thanks :)
I don't really care too much about texture baking.. This stuff s FREE! You can texture bake in Blender and other free things. Thanks so much for contacting/partnering with EPIC Games as you have created such a brilliant thing for games designers who can't always afford expensive software.
So glad that we have a worthy competitor to Substance Painter. Much work is still necessary, like implementing a baker, but this has so much potential! :)

If mixer never adds baking and I still feel the need to make the switch to them, I'd probably add marmoset into the workflow. Its an added step, but I think its still worth it. I still have faith that the devs behind the scenes at mixer are working hard on a baker and all of this will be solved :)

The interface itself is reminiscent of the original Quixel set of tools. You won't need to swap to something else for your baking, and it becomes so easy to do in Blender. Additionally, 3D Coat (offers baking) allows for the painting of quixel mixer materials, which is another option if you prefer direct painting, which it does arguably better than Substance Painter. TexTools is where its at for baking in blender though. I highly recommend you give it a test run, as it will most likely change your opinion of Blender baking. renderhjs.net/textools/blender/

Sorry to annoy you on nearly every video :D , but please, add decent and complete tablet support with pen pressure asap and this will become an absolute phenomenon of a texturing software (It already is of course, but, with this important puzzle piece missing it's just somewhat sad....) . I hope it is not fact that the app is based on Unity that prevents this, but I also would not wonder. Hope it happens and there is way around. Currently, adding a paint layer, completely breaks my tablet behaviour and even changes the projection method. I already love this smart material system aside from that. Really incredible quality. Fantastic work! Looking so forward to use them and also create my own.
at 1:43, he has the occlusion, curvature, AO maps already made. How is this done please? is there a specific software thats really good for this? I suppose you can't just create those from blender or Zbrush etc? Thanks
Imagine having this directly into Unreal Engine 5 as a plugin. Open it and create materials just like that from the plugin and also keep the dynamics, being able to edit in runtime the same way.
Personally, I like them seperate. I end up using every drop of processing power on my computer when doing my layer (mostly because I'm sloppy and have as many made as conveible). UE also eats up a lot of juice just being open. But with tech getting better, it might be as trivial as having Windows Paint and a 2006 game open at some point.

Hi Adam. Mixer is its own program, so to texture your model like in this video, you'd need to export your model and import it in mixer. The texture you create can then be used in blender.
can anyone know why instead of cube for viewing in 3D i have just "3D" and look like 2d,fixed and dont orbit around object???how can i change 3D to show that cube how is reprezented here???
When I try to apply the smart material to my model, the colour changes but no details show up. No dirt is visible either and the layer options don't make any visible changes. It works on the plane and cubes etc just not on my model??
I am not complaining, but I also can not understand this. Proper tablet support is so essential for a professional texturing workflow. I guess it is not that easy to implement. I get the feeling that depending on the underlying structure the software is built upon (Which is Unity, which does not play nice with tablets) it might never come, which would be incredibly sad. Hey I figured I’d ask (for fun, no real practical reason) will you guys ever step into Dreams, it’s a PS4 exclusive (in a nutshell a) game engine (not on PC). It features the ability to make things (that being models and assets) to be “remixable” which allow for importation and modification in other projects. All of this should become more dynamic with the release of the PS5 which it will probably be modified for all of it to perform better and allow for more complex environments and models. This is a very random comment so take it as you will
substance painter has a feature to set different directories on different drives to look for materials and smart materials. Quixel could use this feature.
@@kalasknatte Not on initial instillation of mixer, for whatever reason I could only set the Library directory to another drive. The program and the smart materials had to be installed on the C drive.

Quixel Mixer (QM) looks very easy to use! But can we also create curvature maps of the 3D asset in QM before painting?

Wish I could download smart materials without having to create a symbolic link between my drives since my C drive is full.
substance painter has a feature to set different directories on different drives to look for materials and smart materials. Quixel could use this feature.
You can specify a directory in any folder via the settings! :)
