Not even a new model, a new version of an existing model
I mean the model part is how it works for edition across both aos and 40k.
There are a bunch of factions that get a range refresh or a score of new models when their codex launches while other factions get a new character and thats it.
Sometimes they get maybe some new stuff later in the edition.

My argument against the counterargument of "retcons happen all the time" is simple:
Just because something terrible happens repeatedly doesn't mean you can't complain about it. What, are we not allowed to complain about the IRS because they've been scummy for so long?

This is my go to for all the arguments. Cawl is the literal Deus Ex Machina.
Cawl: "Guilliman, look! I've created female space marines!"
Guilliman: "That's cool... why is their armor exposed around the midriff?"
Cawl:"... no reason."
And the argument would be quite understandable, considering the situation in the galaxy - "we are just running out of men fitting specific genetic requirements at this point"
I mean, there would be still complaints, but at least it would fit the tone and general progression of the story without a retcon whiplash that were femstodes
@@Invizive And like, of course, origionally it's because GW was unbased 30-40 years ago when they decided Women couldn't become Space Marines. But then later they made some lore on WHY females couldn't become Space Marines, which was basically, "We would like to, and we tried, but it didn't work." Which means the Imperium IS receptive to the idea of Female Space Marines. So with that, GW doesn't need to make any other lore reason why Space Marines can be Female other than "Someone figured it out. Probably Cawl, flipping the Chromosomes on the Gene Seeds or whatever non-sense science reason GW comes up with, and BAM, double the Space Marine Budget. The only thing GW needs to worry abot is the Date in which this Scientific Breakthrough happens, and maybe a few lines on how the Space Marines feel about the sudden influx of troops, which will probably go something like, "Space Marines skeptical, Females are just as cappable because Gene Seeds makes everyone equal, everyone happy." Unless they overcomplicate things FSM would be an easy inclusion. It certainly not as far-fetched as some might want you to think.
Actually, GW made Female Space marines originally. It was the retail sellers that literally asked GW to no longer include the female ones in resupply because they weren't selling so they would have waaaayy too many in stock. So eventually they just kinda stopped making them, and then later wrote lore to explain it retroactively. Genuinely a fanbase problem@@daddysempaichan
The bottom line is
1.) There is better ways to do this.
2.) Doing it this way is dumb and would only ever cause outrage.
3.) Why capitulate to people who don't play?
I keep hearing people say the change was to bring in new female fans. Frankly I think we’ve hit the saturation point with that. Plenty of other factions have women and it didn’t bring in tons of new fans. Most of the female fans I know found the change pandering and it kinda screws with the aesthetic of the custodies. Like how if you made the sisters of battle male, it would screw up the nun thing

@@MarieAvora To be fair the initial Primaris introduction was pretty bad. Only after a bunch of good books came out did it die down as it calmed down enough people that the outrage didn't have enough voices anymore.

Honestly as someone who is Gay I've personally never felt like I was excluded I've only ever felt welcomes which funny enough I live ina largely conservative area so most people at my shop are as well, the biggest thing I hate about this is how poorly it was handled. That and how the hobby has become some culture war ground for some on both sides either getting mad and yelling or rubbing in people's faces just to make them mad it's all annoying I just want to enjoy my hobby, and mfs make it hard to enjoy when all you hear when something like this happens it's "woke" this or "chud" that it's actually annoying and that if anything makes me feel like I'd be better off not playing Warhammer if that's what it's going to become. I'm just tired of constant arguing by people who don't care about the lore and don't play the game and never will care or interact with either.
I agree, when the first female space marine argument came around i just came to the conclusion that if they added it, cool. If they don’t cool, it’s really whatever, and that’s how I feel now, I feel like people that are on both political spectrums just don’t care it’s only the extreme ends that do.

Yeah. This is why I'm just done with the hobby. GW is gonna keep making bad business decisions and screw over my factions repeatedly. So I'm done. They kept me on the hook for Sisters in plastic for years, and now that they're displaying their open contempt for Sisters I'm just done. I'm not interested in whining from either side.
But, the people saying woke and chud are those that actually care about the lore. A lore that has been well established for 20+ years. The days of rogue trader where the game had no clear definition of what the story was are far, far gone.
The difference with lore retcons then and now:
Then: we wanted to move the story in a different way
Now: this is not a retcon, there've always been femstodies

And this is a retcon that changes literally nothing about the lore apart for potentially expanding to allow more women into the franchise, so I don’t understand your problem with it.
Also what you described isn’t a retcon, that’s just something new. If the imperium figured out a way to make femstodes, that wouldn’t be a change in already established lore, that would just be…….new lore, because custodes would’ve been men only up until recently, not “always have been”.
Now to be fair, I personally don’t like that method, but I don’t think it affects anything in any way, nor does it take away anything from the sisters of silence, and so I’m not upsetti spaghetti about it, and most people don’t seem to be either. Maybe there’s something I’m missing, but I genuinely don’t think there’s anything wrong with it.

We’ve barely seen them in the lore apart from 30k and there’s little mention other than a couple of self-contradictory sentences in a few blink-and-you’ll-miss texts in their codexes. I'd argue that there is some correlation between the diversity in Star Wars and it sucking. It's writers assuming that they could use diversity to get out of needing to write a good story with good characters. Allowing minorities to have representation shouldn't be work hard enough to make writers too exhausted to write a good story, but some certainly act like it is. Andor gave us incredibly strong female characters and people of different ethnicities and it is, I argue, the best Star Wars media since Disney bought the IP, because the writers don't view representation as a chore, but as part of writing a good story.
If ADB can write fucking Nightlords well I'm sure 40K writers can write a female Custodian just as well as they would a male one. I'm just bracing for the Mary Sue accusations as if the Custodes didn't start out as the most perfect golden boys this side of Sanguinius.
I think you’re somewhat right, but the flat characters seemed to result more from needing them to all be extremely marketable. Diversity was just one aspect of pushing that marketability, not the root cause. It’s the same reason there was a random new cute alien or droid every 30 minutes.

The only part of 40K where i appreciate gender disparity is for the sisters of Battle, for the sole "gotcha" move of sidestepping the "no man under arms shall serve the ecclesarchy".
I always found that lore funny.
I always appreciated them for being the most extreme subversion and satire the setting can offer. They are nuns but they fight, they are women but they are more fanatical, church-loyal and gung-ho than any man, and in a setting that tends towards "secular is good" they are the only good-aligned faction that can ACTUALLY manifest miracles. In fact, they are the only Imperial faction with living saints in it.
If it wasn´t for the commercially testicular pull of Space Marines, Sisters of Battle would be the most representative army of the setting.

Don't take that the wrong way, please. I like the sisters. They make sense lore wise. Fewer women go into military service, but those who do tend to believe in the cause a lot more than their male counterparts. I just kind of want people to remember that representation means they should be equal to, not better than, the thing they represent. (This happened alot with Gay people in movies, they were the wise friend who always gave the best advice)
The Votann were much much bigger Retcon. Then "Hey, the Squats have been eaten by Tyranids." Later: "Squats were one Faction that has been eaten by Tyranids. The rest of them had a huge Empire like Society in the galactic core since... forever."
That was pretty dumb but the reason for doing it matters - they wanted to bring back a faction everyone missed. The custodes thing? Pandering to a group of moaning harpies who don't even play the game.
Squats are much more acceptable in this regard. It is conceivable that the people qe knew as squats were something of a frontier of a larger coreward empire, and that frontier got eaten by tyrannids. Still a retcon, but overall plausible.
The bigger problem I have in this regard are the Demiurg and the whole squats being demihumans thing. The latter just barely fits with the ancient empire idea, but the demiurg thing is just dumb.
Also, they look like bearded, even smoother primaris. Which is a bit of a waste.

Not a peep made is an insane accusation really. There are many times that GW tried to retcon lore and they have received HUGE BACKLASH.
The ones I can come up with on the top of my head is
1. The attempt to change Mortarions intentions when joining nurgle
2. The introduction of primaris and replacement of the old marines
3. The addition of leagues of Votann.
The reaction to all of those were very different from each other and none of them except maybe primaris are comparable to the reaction this has had

I don’t think the leagues of votan have gotten anywhere near close to the concept of hate. Maybe a bit disgruntled over no longer being called squats, but I love the new take on them.

Any time you have a piece of media that satirizes authoritarian regimes and the horrors of war, you invite a thriving community of people that flat out *dont notice the satire* because they are too stupid to do so, and think that the piece of media is glorifying authoritarian horror stories. And are *excited* about that. And those people usually happen to wear red hats and use "woke" as a slur. For other examples, look at Starship Troopers and Helldivers 2.

@@MrMuelltube There is no side to pick. Everyone should hate this style of retcon. It should be stupid to 40k fans who probably know more lore than the guy doing the retcon and the tweet that followed, and it should be equally stupid to people outside who should clearly see this is done as lazily as possible to appeal for ESG money without putting in the legwork to actually fit it in the lore. At the very least it's insulting to both sides.
It's not a matter of feeling. *It is* forced and lazy. At any point they could have released something to build up this change; a couple stories, maybe a in-universe event, something. It would have been infinitely more preferable than the slothful way they did it. And while there would still be some people complaining about it (there always will be), it wouldn't be nearly as bad as it is now. Just plain stupidity on GW's part.
It's the most corporate, boring, lazy and cowardly way of retcon possible. Just throw it out there, duck until the shit storm passes and then carry on like nothing changed. What's sad is that, IIRC there was an author who wanted to write about female custodes and got shot down in the past, could have been a way better inclusion than this mess.

I'll share a tiny anecdote as someone who got into the hobby because of your "Every Warhammer 40k faction in a nutshell" videos Brick, since those last couple minutes of the video hits hard. While yeah, most of my models are still just primed and unpainted, I do want to share this. This happened last Wednesday. I was just picking up the mini of the month from the Warhammer shop near my internship. Just assembling the mini in the store, being a nerd and having brought some Grey Knight parts I wanted to stick on it because that mini will be my Kaldor Draigo, being able to chat with the store manager and one of the employees, being able to chat with other customers... unironically, that moment even more so than initially buying my first couple of models or even painting my first models... That half an hour was magical.
Hearing some British kid talk about how he wants to go from Warhammer shop to Warhammer shop, trying to snag as many free Deathwing Knights because he plays Dark Angels, seeing some German kid and his mom walk in and browse the shop, sitting next to a Raven Guard guy who is gonna try and make his mini into a Terminator Captain, hearing the store owner give instructions to some foreigners into painting their first Marines and of course, one of the trio asked for white paint and made the owner groan. That moment felt magical. That moment made me fall in love with the hobby again, to such a point that I'll most likely be asking friends for another painting starter set for my birthday so I can actually finish my Grey Knights in a way that I like 'em and hopefully get some games in at some point. That moment made me so much more happy that I was able to get that mini of the month. That is what I want to be able to share with others at some point. Not all this Twitter bullshit. I want to be able to nerd out, talk about plastic toy soldiers, ask people why they painted their toy soldiers in a certain way and be proud (or well, proud enough) about saying why I painted mine a certain way.
That was beautiful to read, that really does compile together all the small parts that make this hobby nice. This game for all it's faults, it's bullshit, it's retcons (which I typically don't mind to make that clear) and so on but I can't deny it has brought joy in multiple ways biggest being I have made new friends through this hobby. Right now I am in the middle of a crusade and I am looking forward it how it unfolds.

Well said. I don't really see anyone mad about Custodes having women members, I see people mad that it was done so poorly. I also see people mad that the female based factions get little to no attention. Such as the sisters of silence or perhaps the harlequins. Very very powerful factions that are essentially female only and yet GW refuses to add lore. Sisters of Silence are the most important faction in WH40K and they don't have 1 novel nor their own detachment.

TBH I’m kinda ticked off at how unceremoniously female custodes were introduced. Like, why does it have to be relegated to a few paragraphs? Why can’t it be a big deal? You could’ve done so much more with this pretty cool thing and now it just comes off as lazy.

Even if it was new lore ala primaris custodes adding female custodes due to them being on the frontlines now to replenish their ranks quicker would be fine too. Instead they dont even care and just say they were always around. Lazy af

I think it depends on the case. Primaris marines having a ridiculously elaborate lore drop that amounted to "they have 2 wounds now" is an example of something that could've just been a retcon, and I think this is a similar situation.
Seems a bit hypocritical to say that female Space Marines would take away from Sisters of Battle and yet female Custodes doesn’t take away from Sisters of Silence….
Well sisters of silence have the whole blank stuff going on and female Custodes don’t.
Sisters are just power armour women so having other better power armour women would take away from that.
You can make multiple 1:1 comparisons between Custodes/SoS that are the same for Space Marines and SoB.
Both groups are sworn to protect the Emperor.
Both groups are entirely made up of one gender.
Sos being Blanks are a unique gimmick is no different that SoB being known to manifest miracles due to their faith in the Emperor. To make female Custodes detracts from Sos just the same as female Space Marines detracting from SoB.

Did you even listen to the video? Same rules apply: Space Marines are defined by their post-human status. SoB are defined by their turbofaith. SoS are defined by being Blanks. Custodes are Space Marines But More. If anything, the existence of Custodes takes away from Space Marines.
Personally I don't have a problem with it from the lore perspective. But I hate that decision because it's obviously made out of desire to virtue signal. And to retcon the lore because you want to virtue signal is simply a step that should be regarded as stupid or needless at best. Simple as. Other than that, it should also be criticized because it might snowball into other retcons made out of desire to virtue signal. In other words, this retcon should be preemptively hated unless we want to risk getting more retcons.

So then lets have the brothers of battle and the brothers of silence if it doesn't matter? It's not about the fact that female custodes exist necessarily, its more what precedent it sets for the rest of the setting; a move away from the grimdark nature towards making the fucking imperium inclusive.
It is also quite obvious why this was thrown in with little to no regard to established lore, GW couldn't justify a retcon that would have unmade decades of books and lore so they had to lie and say that "There have always been female custodes.
But more to the point: why is it that nearly every goddamn time there's a male centric faction in any fiction it needs to adapt and be changed? When the same cannot be said for female centric factions, i.e. the sisters of battle. Factions no one has a problem with and no one wants to change.
But all of a sudden when there is but one faction that provides a male power fantasy its wrong and you have to be inclusive. Why? Why can't we have that without it being fucked with? The Sisters of Silence have been starved for lore for ages and this is the route GW goes?

It’s literally just the 8th edition codex, that is the only thing that has ever specifically said only men with almost every other thing on their creation being vague with us still not even knowing what the actual process is outside of darkage techno-magic, besides ADB who was a leading figure when custodes got their start in the tabletop back in 2014 when they were first getting real lore he had intended for some custodes to be woman but gw was lazy as they had not included female head sculpts in the kits as confirmed in one of his blog posts around 6 years ago
As for factions of all woman factions getting men, there have been some such as the Amazonians who in the comics later had lore changed to where they did have sons but they were either thrown into the sea to drown or given to Hephaestus to work his forge
I have to disagree with one key point Bricky. I would argue complaining about something GW has done is completely within the normal community mindset and has been since the get go - it just gets worse at certain stages. The big ones that got me annoyed at them was the end times and getting rid of WHFB and the ridiculous firstborn/primaris attempt at invalidating past models. Neither of which seem to have worked all that well given the direction they seem to be going in lately.
For the custodes thing I think the thing most people dislike is actually that its the obvious IPO company dip the toe, half in half out, hedge their bets bs that is so common and always shows weak leadership of a company. For everyone else, I agree with you, they are just jumping on the "go woke, go broke" mentality. They aren't completely wrong though, slippery slopes will be (and are) a problem but in law, not in lore.

I just realized that male blanks might actually be kinda screwed in the 40k universe. I'm not 100% sure if there are female Culexus assassins but if there are, then a female blank at least has a 2 out of 3 chance not to die. Males kinda have a 50-50 chance if their only chance is either Culexus or dead.

Honestly, if they went with a full range refresh, complete with a novel and upgrade sprue, I would be way more onboard with it. Going with one short story in a shit codex, and a bunch of gaslighting tweets was the worst way to execute this kind of lore change, and honestly that's what makes it so infuriating to me. There's portraying an unreliable narrator, and then there's a lack of integrity and trust in your narrative. This situation feels like the latter.
this is corporate water testing 101. GW are legitimately scared of upsetting the "no women" crowd, even if they tweet about acceptance and tolerance, they are concerned only about their bottom line. Fiduciary responsibility. They looked at custodes, weighed the opportunity cost of women/no women, but decided to test the waters. I don't think its a surprise that its a single female custodes. Think about it, if there was some huge backlash , they could simply walk it back and tweet "this custodes is trans" and change the spin entirely.
Now that the road is clear however, perhaps we'll see next codex they get something.

I'm a poor Stodes player because I haven't read the novels yet, but from what I understand our faction is currently working on expanding expeditions beyond Terra and restoring the SoS after they were almost genocided, so it would be a good two birds-one stone move to have the next novel focus on the restoration and possible expansion of the Custodes and Sisters of Silence to lay the foundation for the new direction we're taking things and smooth all this over. (And if James is reading, I'll work cheap as a writer lol)

My only real problem is the lack of women in custodes previously, and then GW being like “what do you mean they’ve always been here.” I’ve always seen custodes as the 40k stormcast eternals equivalent, so it’s not a big deal. If we get more in depth looks at how custodes are made, it shouldn’t be a big deal. I mean, sure custodes are pumped full of testosterone and other things just like space marines, but they’re also rebuilt at the genetic level instead of being filled with implants, so I mean it could be fine. I just want to know why and how from an in game science level, that’s all

They are not pumped full of testosterone nor implanted with new organs. Every aspect of a Custodian is handcrafted cell-by-cell by the emperor, working from the basis of a newborn.
They are the ascended next stage in human evolution, arcane demigods, not roided-out factory-made soldiers.
Although an actual technical description of the exact processes involved is not something we will ever get and if we do it will probably just be a load of science magic jargon on par with 'arcane genetic alchemy'.

I mean, that's essentially how they always do their lore stuff though. The Rogal Dorn tank wasn't there until it always was there since a model was coming out. The T'au weren't a thing until they were and then they were always there. The T'au's FTL travel has been re-done like 5 times at this point, but this most recent version is always how it worked. Leagues of Votann weren't there until they were and then they were always there, the Imperium just didn't look hard enough. WH40K is an ever evolving setting. Not narrative mind you, I explicitly mean a setting. The lore will be whatever it needs to be to sell plastic figures and books to us. Nothing more, nothing less.
Man I learned how to blend colours properly and highlighting in general by asking a friend how they did their makeup.
Of all the obvious inclusivity moves GW did, this one was just lazy. Like come on there were opportunities too right? Custodes have this little thing over Astartes lore wise where their creation process doesn't forbid women, it was kinda just Emperor choice. War in the Webway killed like 9/10ths of all Custodes so just say you're desperate recruitment thing. Same thing when Guilliman returned and there was that gigantic Chaos outbreak, say they needed to cull more noble houses than they were comfortable with so instead of just taking sons they take sons and daughters from the nobles.
That being said Bricky, GW retconning and disrespecting it's IP often is not cause to disregard people being mad about it. People mad about retcons now were mad about retcons then. It's still bad, it doesn't stop being bad because people who like Warhammer are the abused housewife of fandoms.

My issue with GW over the whole Female Custodes isn’t the inclusion of them, that’s cool and I’m here for it.

Why not introduce them with some quality fresh storytelling which explains why there haven’t been female Custodes up until now and how and why they are starting now.

Not once they were mentioned that they were women back then. They said that the emperor had chosen noble sons of terra to be his bodyguards.

They already have amazing characters for women that help with the guardian role. Custodes has a weakness against psykers which is why the sisters of silence existed. With their presence, the custodes were able to kill psykers and daemons. Sisters of battle were had amazing characters and sub-faction. I loved their role in the age of apostasy and the execution of Goge Vandire.
We grew to know these groups as:
Women: Sisters of Silence, Sisters of Battle
Men: Astartes, Custodes(no longer because of the retcon)
Mix: Imperial guards, inquisition, Assassinorum, mechanicus, highlords of terra, etc
Even other factions showed more women like Yvraine with the Eldar and Shadowsun with the Tau. If we suddenly learned that there were always men in the sisters group this will piss me off even more.

Retcon happens but not all are good and many times people hated it.
there were other female additions to the necrons and the eldar but no one had much a complaint as much as this. There was a specific agenda why this retcon was made and in many people's cases they thought it was unnecessary. Amazon admitted (for their show) that the sisters of silence and battle were too religious and quiet and demanded to add female custodes instead of a new faction or updates to the old ones.

Aaron Dembski-Bowden has wanted to do female Custodes for years, but kept getting shot down by higher ups despite him and a ton of Black Library writers all wanting it, and even working on lore for them. For all we know, this could just be them letting the Black Library writers do what they’ve dreamed of for years.

I am not really against the female custodes but I just found it unnecessary. I wanted to see more about the sisters of battle or sisters of silence. especially the sister of silence since they were always how do you say it... underused. I think you're right with what you said in 3. I apologize but I was a bit frustrated with this change since it gave the same vibe as the whole Star Wars (legends and other old lore that are no longer canon) and other fictional stories, (Tolkien Rings of Power, Halo series, witcher series) I felt a bit tired on how company these days are treating the things I love to read and learn more about when growing up. I heard from my side and friend group that it was unnecessary and appalling how they handled it.

Had literally an easy way to make it canon and keep everyone happy. Fall of Cadia return of Guilliman and Custodes joining the fight would necessitate more Custodes. Hence more candidates regardless of gender they would bolster the ranks in current lore. Also why not buff Sisters of Silence or promote THEM to be new Custodes. Saying "they were always there" is lazy and pathetic.
Custodes are not really made anymore (only Big E had the knowledge to do it, but also they could just say "Well Cawl also knows how to" so whatever) so that wouldn't fit.
Big E probably created them way back and because, you know, they are covered in the same armour as the male ones it's not very noticeable
Actually you know what? That would've made FAR more sense than saying "they were always there", plus it would still mean the Sisters would be the yin to the yang of previous Custodes. I honestly think that would have EASILY been the less awful version of getting female Custodes. The male Custodes could be masters against physical threats and the female ones against psychic and metaphysical ones. They would both be incredibly powerful, but in different ways.

I saw an explanation someone made on reddit that I liked. It was that the genestealer cult on terra had infected too many of the noble bloodlines, so they had to expand the range for recruitment.

I don't have any strong opinion on Fem Custodes; kinda like Bricky, I'm just thinking "That's cool I guess", and GW is known to retcon frequently. But the fact that GW says "We're changing the thing, if you don't like the new thing you can fuck off" is what irks me.
Not only that, but GW is also pulling the "it was there all along" card, while addressing a very passionate (if not obsessed) fanbase who literally possesses written proof that it was, in fact, not there all along. GW isn't just insulting the conservative's opinion, they're also insulting their intelligence and that is just shameful.

It would be accurate if GW came out and said “You now HAVE to run women in your Custodes army”, but they didn’t, and nothing is stopping any Custodes player from still running only male models, and in fact most probably will have to since GW to my knowledge does not have any female head sculpts to use and has no plans to introduce any. I have no faith that GW will actually flesh out female Custodes any further than this, causing this just to end up like that one Grey Knights - Sisters of Battle interaction that everyone knows but never talks about. I think that female Custodes is pretty cool and would work because first, theres not really anything to say women cannot be custodians, and second, it would help bring the Custodes away from the idea of just being ‘super space marines’, and thirdly it might cause GW do actually make more plastic Custodes.
Theres also a multitude of ways this change could be properly implemented, one of Big E’s/Malcador’s final orders could’ve been for the Custodes to start recruiting women for the custodian guard. Maybe after the return of Guilliman, with the Custodes finally acting outside of the golden palace, they could have decided to begin recruiting women to help increase their numbers and to also signify a radical change in their dogma that the Adeptus Custodes will be taking a more permanent and active role in the Imperium at large.
Again, the way GW is handling this online it really feels like they just wanted to get some internet brownie points and have no plans of actually expanding this. If they do actually create proper lore and stories behind the creation and implementation of female Custodians, then they need to go full swing and not half-ass it. They also need to get a new Codex team that is capable of making more than four detachments cause damn that is just sad, and if they are trying to get the Sisters of Silence more tabletop representation with the detachments give them more than just one dedicated model kit.

GW saying that it's always been true when they have actively supported the opposite and still support the opposite is just insulting.
If gw wants to make this statement, that there are women custodians, then they should actually do something to make that statement true.
Making models would have been the perfect way to do that, making new custodes sculpts with female heads would have been perfect for the new codex, far better than the shield captain.
There are ways GW could have done this, ways that would have appeased the angry minority and made everyone else like the change, instead gw did it in one of the worst possible ways.

Yes the lore from something like 10 years ago that was written in the side margins of their book. Nothing hard set in stone. Also this "lore" is made to set mini dolls.

Also space marines only have men because they need to be compatable with geneseed, not because women are just too weak to go through the process.

Pretty sure they did it to cover the dumpster fire codex. At least the Custodes can still play in Horus Heresy.
If they want to they should make SoS or SoB even more genetically altered super soldiers. Make them twice as strong as the space Marines and custodes. Just like the boy scouts, making the male equivalent gender neutral while keeping the girl scouts is the shittiest way to do it.
SoB got buff from the Big E himself through their sheer faith.
SoS were put through enchancing procedures by Cawl to face even greater dangers.

GW can change everything in 40k...but please give us a short story or a novel for stuff like this. I like the idea of mixed custodians, it sells the entire "peak of humanity" thing a bit better. But put some effort into it. I HATE lazy writing and we ARE paying a premium for this stuff. (Also bricky sounds depressed...can we create an apple and coffee fund? I think he needs it.)
They did give us a short story about this stuff though, bricky even brought that up.

GW should have given us a proper origin story or an explanation for the changes.
The blood games story is a good character introduction, no problems with that.
But the entire thing feels forced and kinda lazy. They could've introduced female custodians towards the final days of the heresy. I mean, they did talk about female primarchs in some of those books. They chose the absolute worst way to introduce them. 5 pages would've been enough. I just want a good explanation why they never came up in the lore. :/
@@kaon9393 I can understand your frustration, but you gotta remember that 1 If big E only implemented female custodes at the end of the horus heresy it would make it seem like he just handicapped himself and thus his empire and mankind up to that point by having less recruits for the custodes on purpose for no reason.
And well if you want an explanation for why you never saw them for lore its basically the same explanation for almost every time a new unit is introduced for a faction in lore.

I think much of the backlash right now isn't purely about the female custodians. The AOS thing threw people off, and the codices seem lacklustre. (Or from what I can tell, my local group isn't happy about both)

At one point they have to decide if they want to have Monogendered Factions (that need to have Lore reasons for it, like the Sisters of Battle's "no man under arms" origin) or if they want to make all factions genderless.
And if they decide to have gendered factions then they have to keep an relatively equal number of Male and Female only factions, not favouring one or the other

You know my thought on this topic before I saw this was "so what? GW recons things all the time, nothing new." But that was before I knew how they did it. Now I'm mad about it. I don't mind the female custodies, that's not the issue, I believe if you want to do something like this you should at least write it well and try and have it make sense. Hell, make a book out of it and cover the journey, but don't just make it some throw away story covered in 1 page of a codex.

Honestly I disagree with Bricky on this one. What pisses people off it's not having a woman in the Custodes but having GW pissing all over established lore just for "good guy points". The setting doesn't lack rapresentation (all xenos but orks and necrons have a lot of good female characters for example) and a Female Custodes wasn't needed. People would feel the same if tomorrow a man would magically appear as a canoness of the Sisters of Battle. It's sbout respecting the universe and it's rules

I have a feeling that the codex story made it past editors and rather than retcon the retcon they decided to roll on.
They couldve made multiple books building up female custodians and make it graphic like how so many women in the thousands if not millions died over the timeline of 40k trying to make them into space marines through pov of the one exepction that became one.
