I Like how you're using both old and new gear and you're not stricktly 'analog only'. I would love to see some "get it all from one machine" vlogs. Like making a whole composition on a Roland D50 or something. Another thing I would really like is some insights on how you keep you're instrumental music interesting without using vocals. You're one of the rare instrumental musicians I listen to for a whole album.
jupiters don't use ACB - they use ABM which has comparable quality filters, but uses scaling, range limiting, macros etc with the zencore engine to do the emulation
Great to see just what is possible with the ZEN-Core system. A lot of people bash Roland for not doing analog, citing a certain company cloning various analog synths as 'what people want'. In my mind, Roland are proving that getting stuck in the mindset of the past is not why they are here today. This is epic technology! Not only that, the Jupiter X looks gorgeous. Excellent patch programming skills Kebu, hope you'll integrerate the Jupiter X into your live rig - sponsored or not (I saw you at Superbooth in 2019).
Kebu. I discovered you a few years ago on RUclips and absolutely love your music and use of analogue synths. These tutorials have been a great insight as to how it's all done. Recently brought you dvd of your performance in Oslo. Epic. Keep up the amazing work
i love how the sound you programmed on the JX-8P is called "juno pluck", like you're trying to get a juno sound on the JX-8P, but then on the jupiter X you're trying to recreate that sound, so you're trying to use the jupiter X to emulate a JX-8P that's trying to emulate a juno, it's just emulations all the way down lmao. great video, love this, love the JX, and i'm getting really interested in the jupiter X now
And thanks for these how to videos I spent weeks trying to recreate that sound and you just draw a map for us so cool thank you Hope you and Yours Have a Happy Holiday.
The modeling in System 8 should be more accurate, as the original circuit was modeled in detail. The modeling in the Jupiter-X / Fantom sound engine is more of an approximation, taking less power and allowing more polyphony, but still does a great job of it. Unfortunately, I don't own any of the original synths available as models in both formats, so I haven't been able to do such a comparison.
It seems odd that there’s this huge synth with a ton of controls, but you have to use that little screen for half the time editing the Jupiter X. You even had to change the foot length (octave) of the oscillators? Just seems like a weird choice on Rolands part, why that screen is way on the left. Good video though. Always fun watching your videos.
Hi KEBO - excellent video and I really appreciate the mix of modern and vintage gear you’re using. Question - what are those green giant monitors in the background? Greetings from Germany
@@kebu thank you so much for taking it into consideration! I’m pretty new to the sound design world and there aren’t really many videos online that go into details on how to do tone edits on the Fantom, so I’m pretty sure that if you made a video, it would be so helpful to newcomers like me. :)
Thanks to Kebu I now know that one of the best things about Roland is it’s backwards compatibility if you ever come to Baltimore Kebu, I owe you some beer.
I hope that door/window in the background isn't the way to the toilet because if I were in that room, I'd probably p155 myself with excitement. WOW that is some rig!
I need to ask this question Mr. Kebu how do you run all your cables do you use a midi splitter to record on DAWs my studio is a mess of cables and and I’m worried if I tie them together I’ll get noise do you have these issues
I use several MIDI-USB interfaces with 8 in&out ports each. Audio I run through a digital mixer. I use earthed power, which helps in eliminating noise. I've had noise problems with cheap USB hubs, which I got rid of by replacing them with better ones.
Hi Kebu . How name your style music ? It's new age style ??? I grew up with music greatest Koto and Laserdanse. I very like your things and like listen in my car very ;) Good luck for you and thank you for yor work 😊
Thank you for taking the time to explain this patch. I don't own either of those synths but was able to get very close to that sound on two of my synths just from the explanation of the base settings you gave here. The only Roland I have atm is a DS88, and it can get surprisingly close to that sound on it. Recreating this sound on a Hydrasynth is a bit different, to say the least. But I manages to get very close on it as well. I have not tried it on my Wavestate yet. One thing I have noticed over the years is that nothing is ever linear between different synths, and that is a good thing. If they were linear, they would sound far to similar.... Again, thank you for explaining how you made your patch, and how to transfer it to other synths. Thank you for the Zen core patch as well.
@@kebu Ikr, I was just joking. Does the Jupiter X miss the sync 2 too like in the early JX‐8P expansion model? It's a really nice virtual model but I'll prefer my original 8p 😉👌
Hey, good point - there is no Sync 2 in the JX-8P model! I completely missed that. So Sync 2 and negative mixer envelopes are missing from the model. I wonder why they chose not to implement those. Especially negative mixer envelopes should be quite straightforward to implement.
really enjoyed that. the james k hiser midi designer pro ipad layouts let you edit the underlying zencore parameters even with the models - so you can do negative env amounts that way (or mod.matrix etc)
But I'm already working on the lowest level (tone edit). I doubt that the layout can work with any parameters that are not available in the synth itself. Also, there is no modulation matrix in the Jupiter-X for the models, only for the ZEN-Core tones. But thanks for the hint about the editor. Sadly, I couldn't get it to work in my old iPad (gen 3).
@@kebu the models/ABM are a layer that sits on top of full zencore. In the menus we just get a curated selection of parameters, but the full range of zencore parameters are there under the hood even when we're using a model. Those parameters (eg mod matrix) are accessible via sysex and there are even some parameters that the models use which are not in any menus at all even in zencore (eg "VCF gain correction" which affects low end as resonance is increased and is how roland make the same filter - VCF1 - sound different for juno/jx-8p/sh-101, "pitch down depth" which is used to do low freq mode for jup 8 osc etc). When James made the layouts he went from the midi implementation chart so he ended up making an editor that has access to all of those parameters. In case you're interested, I did a big dig into how the models are made in zencore, which shows the various structures, scalings, range limits and macros they use: www.dropbox.com/s/ycfy8ixa8jjwodo/ABM%20models%20in%20zencore.jpg?dl=0
Even though the knob and fader mapping is incomplete for some of the models, I am surprised that you do pretty much all your editing with the two knobs close to the display. You may have done quite some editing with rack units like the D-110 back in the day
Both are very nice synthesizers, the JX-8P and the Jupiter-X, the latter being far more powerful, of course. Looks like the JD-800 model came out also, I wonder if they're going to do the D-50 model, or D-70. I'd personally love the D-70 model. To have a reliable D-70 would be a dream come true.
Kebu, podríamos darnos una breve explicación, ojalá en un vídeo de cómo tienes conectados e interconexión años todos tus teclados Roland?. Estaría muy bien. Me gustaría poder verlo.
After I've completed my next album I will make more workshop videos, of which one will be a detailed explanation of how everything is connected and set up.
Pg-8x AND JX-8P for me 😏😏😏 Btw sync 2 and negative envs are missing since the very first version of the ZenCore model so...I'll chose the PG-8X every time as it's lighter on the cpu and it simply sounds better
I happen to have such a stand myself, so I can confirm that the Jupiter-X fits perfectly on a K&M 18860 Spider Pro keyboard stand, both on the upper and the lower tier. And it looks really great on it. :) You just have to extend the tiers four stops. I also tried the smaller Jupiter-Xm, but that is not wide enough for the Spider Pro tiers.
The Jupiter-X sounds nice but I am a little disappointed by its controls. The X seems to require quite a lot of scrolling on its tiny screen. I guess thats the price for having multiple models within one interface.
@@kebu thanks, they look awesome but nowhere near as impressive as that fine synth setup you have. I only have a Korg Oasys 88 fully upgraded, a Korg karma and Roland Sh101 . Having had an Xm for only a few weeks, this has been a huge help! The Zencore engine is indeed vast but I'm slowly getting the hang of it.
