How do you begin to control an out of control invasive species in the Northeast when warming ocean temperatures keep making it so easy for them to reproduce and outcompete native species for resources and space? Creatively. By creating culinary uses and markets and making the species a potential side hustle for fishers and aquaculturists and bringing a new seafood product to consumers.
Dr. Gabriela received a Ph.D. in Zoology from The University of New Hampshire in 2005, and an M.A. in Biology from Bryn Mawr College in 2000. Her programming is mainly focused around seafood marketing, market creation, and consumer education and awareness about New Hampshire’s fisheries and local seafood accessibility. Her research on invasive green crabs explores market development for a potential green crab fishery, as well as soft-shell crab production. Additionally, she leads citizen science programs looking at green crab population and distribution in coastal New Hampshire.
