Nice vid man, as a calcio fan calciopoli is one of the most Interesting yet shameful episodes in Italian football, even more than totonero because there's always this feeling that we only know the tip of the iceberg. If you ever make a detailed video on it I'll gladly watch it
I honestly though you are gonna talk about Mussolini intimidating everyone, including the own national team, to win the WC in the 30s. But this is also great
If a team is found guilty of cheating/match fixing, the owners should have their assets seized and thrown in prison for at minimum 10 years, the club should be relegated to the lowest tier of professional football in their nations, players contracts get locked indefinitely until they get back into the tier they were removed from then the time starts counting again. You can’t trade players and have to continue paying them the same salary all that time. If a player retires, he isn’t allowed to play in any professional league be it beach football, futsal or field football. Make the penalty so heavy that people are terrified of doing it. That would fix it. As for officials getting caught, you seize all their assets and put them in prison for 10 years as well, they have to start from scratch as if they were just born.
Great Insight on Calciopoli. There is a brilliant Netflix documentary on the show Bad Sport which focuses on the exact case and goes into good detail about it. For those who to watch it is the 3rd Episode on the show.
Would be cool if you did the portuguese football corruption scandal "Apito Dourado" (Golden Whistle) . It went on during and before "Calciopoli" and to this day the clubs and parties envolved haven't been charged or gone to prison.
There's probably match fixing in every league. Madrid usually plays with favorable refereeing, and it shows a lot when in a particular game they couldn't or wouldn't get that advantage. On the topic of Spanish football there's been a disgustingly high amount of scandals that have blown up in recent years and the problem is that they usually blow up far too late for there to be any action to be taken besides punishing the club leadership
The 2006 calciopoli scandal mentioned juventus milan florentina and lazio while the 1980 totonero scandal sent milan and lazio to serie b while avellino bologna and perugia gave out a five point penalty for the following season!!!
Calciopoli was a scandal not only related to football: Moggi was the head of a sort of "organization", and he was able to grant favours even to politicians and high ranked militaries; the gifts were many, and definitely not only "discounts" on Fiat products; we're talking about Rolex, Cars, Houses... even better jobs. That dude literally had two policemen as "bodyguards" You're right, many other teams had a line of comunication with the referees, but Moggi was the one who controlled the whole thing, and the one you had to ask to fix the game. E.g. Inter president, Giacinto Facchetti, indeed had lines of comunications with the referees - which still was illegal - but there is no proof of match fixing Moreover, 2004 is just the year the investigation started, but it's pretty clear that this situation started way before 2004
Italians have always been suspicious of bribery and match fixing, just look at 1965 Liverpool vs inter Milan Semi final of European cup , that was one of the most worst refereeing in the history of the European cup
And when Juve beat Liverpool(Heysel I think), foul was well outside the box, you can see it in the live play, not even replay, the ref gives a penalty and Juve won 1-0, with Platini(another allegedly corrupt scumbag) taking the winning penalty. Doesn't help the Italian image that they basically created/revolutionized "modern" organized crime.
@@FrePado All English teams were suspended from Europe for a minute, YEARS, what more do you want? What I said still stands...imo the game should have been abandoned after that incident though.
@@Mad_Intellect yes, I agree, That game shouldn't have been played. In that situation the referee made the right decision to make sure Liverpool wouldn't win that game.
Who they were going for was Berlusconi but they couldn't manage to do it(that boiled till the bunga bunga scandal). Moggi was the scapegoat but it also had to do with the fact that italian football was not economically healthy and that was the first step which was taken. Also calciopoli comes from tangentopoli. And fun fact, the owner(Moratti) of the only big team which came out clean with the whole "cardboard scudetto" situation,(Inter) coincidentally had very strong connections with the leadership of Telecom which is the phone company who cooperated with the autorities intercepting all the incriminating calls.
I will never forget an incident in a Juve-Inter match probably in the 1999-2000 season during which Ronaldo ran into the Juve penalty area with the ball at his feet only to be fouled by a defender who put his hand square in the middle of Ronaldo's chest to block him and made no attempt to play the ball. It was clear obstruction but strangely the ref didn't see anything. About a minute later, Alessandro del Piero ran into Inter's box and fell over without being touched and the ref awarded an immediate penalty. Juve won the match 1-0. When Calciopoli came out it all made sense especially after reading the transcript of a police telephone intercept in which Moggi says to a referee, "It's not just about what you see. It's also about what you don't see."
It was 1997/1998. And you should watch even Inter Juventus where Taribo West jumped on Inzaghi and the referee did NOT give a penalty for Juventus. Or even Lazio Inter where Moriero dives and the referee gives a penalty to Inter. Or the other 14 games where the referees helps Inter to win the title
Hi football iconic I love your content it covers really good topics with interesting facts for an idea could you do a brief run through of each World Cup personally I love old football it was much more entertaining
Hellas Verona won the Scudetto because of refs being assigned randomly to games, then the Italian league went back to the old system, Preben Elkjær has some funny stories about how in the following season all the refs were fixing games against Verona
I would love a sort of tropico style football game where its all about corruption and using the most dirty and corrupt methods to win. Like match fixing or using bribes to get the league or any other trophy like the WC or Ucl immediately. And if you fail or get caught you get relegated or banned from certain tournaments or point deductions etc. It would be a very fun game tbh i would play that
As a longtime Juve fan, I was heartbroken when they got relegated to Serie B. They had talented/skilled players (my favorite till this day and my idol: Zlatan) and they lost almost all of them but I never gave up on the club.
I feel like at least us italians own up to our errors. The 2002 world cup was scandalous and south korea have never admitted to being corrupt. And tbh if all leagues had the same amount of income to that made in the premier league matchfixing wouldn't be a thing because players wages would be healthy in the lower divisions.
Much of the ill-feeling in Italy towards Juventus comes from beliefs that they have bribed refs for decades. Roma fans feel that the 1980-81 Scudetto was stolen from them. (Moggi handled transfers for Roma at one stage in his career and many fans believe he left Roma when it was found that he was being bribed to do favourable deals for Juve). Then in 1981-82, Fiorentina fans feel that they were cheated by Juve bribing refs. These clubs are not clubs that have won many Scudetti - Roma 3 and Fiorentina 2 - so any loss is keenly felt. Fiorentina fans felt particularly insulted when their star player in 1990 Roberto Baggio was sold to Juve. Going further back to the 60s and 70s, English clubs have suffered at the hands of Italian clubs and bent referees: Inter scoring directly from an indirect free-kick vs Liverpool, Leeds vs Milan and Derby vs Juventus.
That's not the first time Juventus were suspected of wrongdoing. There was a doping scandal as well in the 90s, if I remember correctly. You should check that out too.
The real story from the 2006 scandal was home inter Milan got away with it and had former executives on the board of the people investigating the fixing

Please do one about The Greek League man..I'm a die hard Panathinaikos fan,and throughout all this years Olympiakos (out biggest and most hated rivals) have been paying referees and fixing matches only cause they got money..Please bro
Inter Milan is the only beneficiary here, so many people actually thought they were the one behind Calciopoli scandal, after all they dominate the serie a after the whole thing
A club can't "start the whole thing" because to unearth things like these it always takes independent investigations. Not to mention that if there was a calciopoli scandal it's because Juventus was and is the most corrupted club in sports history(even now their president has ties to the mafia). Inter dominated the Serie A and won the triplete because they had the best team in the world with the best players in the world not to mention the best manager at the time(Mourinho). And even Mancini was good before him. At the end of the day, on the pitch, there was never anything wrong happening in Inter games that would benificiate them. But in almost EVERY Juventus game, i saw the most disgusting things ever. To the point where you questioned if you were being paranoid and you actually saw what you just saw(keep in mind in the 90s you couldn't just go on youtube and rewatch something crazy you just saw live on TV).
@@FuzzyDlop Juve is not completely innocent, but it is still too much for Juve to be relegated, the judge even later admit that it was a wrong decision because the season is about to start and he is pressed to give the verdict. You think a club can't start the whole thing? Maybe not but Inter president Moratti is not a simple man either, being a president of Inter is just one of his many identity.
If I was a star player I would have stayed with Juventus during the relegation. Show loyalty while basically taking a year off in the farmer's league and concentrating on my international play and training. Hopefully they team and fans would remember me for that.

Nice vid man, as a calcio fan calciopoli is one of the most Interesting yet shameful episodes in Italian football, even more than totonero because there's always this feeling that we only know the tip of the iceberg. If you ever make a detailed video on it I'll gladly watch it
4:00 *'Getting ripped off when you're trying to rip people off is very tough'*
It's not tough, it's poetic justice.
Yep. Was being sarcastic 😂
the 2005 06 juventus team was ridiclous: Zlatan, del piero, nedved, cannavaro, thuram, zambrotta, vieira, emerson, buffon
0:55 Imagine getting relegated on 91 points 😳
My favourite youtuber uploads What a way to end a bad week 😆😆
Wow the username and pfp shows
Couldn't tell
Insane video my guy 🙏🏻
Banger video, been killing it recently
Cheers, buddy!
I honestly though you are gonna talk about Mussolini intimidating everyone, including the own national team, to win the WC in the 30s.
But this is also great
"discount on fiat "thing was hilarious!
Brilliant video as always
Italian here: great video, very accurate! And congrats on your pronunciation, it's nice and understandable!
Best Football Channel on RUclips of All Time.
💯💯❤️❤️👑🔥🔥
Didn't knew MKBHD had football channel
One day, we'll see the French edition
Actually something similar happened with OM in 1993.
@@anakinstarlord Hence why I talked about the French edition
@@lucaslonchampt613 sorry I misunderstand your comment. 👍👍
If you want to know more about calciopoli it’s on Netflix series called bad sports and it’s episode 3. It’s a great documentary
German matchfixing in the 70s was Something too
Awesome stuff man. I subscribed as soon as I watch your video for the first time and I’ve been binge watching ever since! You the best!
Love the videos really interesting. underrated channel!
Loving the Videos!
Much love from LA!
Loving the new beard my guy, looking sharp
Cheers haha
Great Insight on Calciopoli. There is a brilliant Netflix documentary on the show Bad Sport which focuses on the exact case and goes into good detail about it. For those who to watch it is the 3rd Episode on the show.
Would be cool if you did the portuguese football corruption scandal "Apito Dourado" (Golden Whistle) . It went on during and before "Calciopoli" and to this day the clubs and parties envolved haven't been charged or gone to prison.
Hiii
I actually requested this for this video . And you actually did it !!!! Yay 😂😂😂😂😂
I would suggest that you look into the Portuguese football scandal "Golden Whistle"
Fede it's just cool af and hearing a saffa accent covering these topics and killing your videos!
This channel is amazing 👏
Calciopoli was a scandal not only related to football: Moggi was the head of a sort of "organization", and he was able to grant favours even to politicians and high ranked militaries; the gifts were many, and definitely not only "discounts" on Fiat products; we're talking about Rolex, Cars, Houses... even better jobs. That dude literally had two policemen as "bodyguards"
You're right, many other teams had a line of comunication with the referees, but Moggi was the one who controlled the whole thing, and the one you had to ask to fix the game. E.g. Inter president, Giacinto Facchetti, indeed had lines of comunications with the referees - which still was illegal - but there is no proof of match fixing
Moreover, 2004 is just the year the investigation started, but it's pretty clear that this situation started way before 2004
Hidden beard just appeared on cam let’s go. Running that facial hair
Nowdays only few Teams really fix matches, is nearly impossible to tell wich teams there are now, but I’m sure they are still around.
@@Mad_Intellect Liverpool should have been disqualified from the final after the Heysel incident caused by his supporters.
@@FrePado 2 wrongs don't make a right.
FC Porto is still Match fixing in Portugal but their mafia won't let them get relegated
Man I love your content
You should also mention that several of Juventus' key players did NOT leave the club when they were relegated and stayed to get Juve back to glory!
Great video, bro. 👏👌
The Mbappe joke was brutal 😩😂😂😂😂
Who they were going for was Berlusconi but they couldn't manage to do it(that boiled till the bunga bunga scandal). Moggi was the scapegoat but it also had to do with the fact that italian football was not economically healthy and that was the first step which was taken. Also calciopoli comes from tangentopoli. And fun fact, the owner(Moratti) of the only big team which came out clean with the whole "cardboard scudetto" situation,(Inter) coincidentally had very strong connections with the leadership of Telecom which is the phone company who cooperated with the autorities intercepting all the incriminating calls.
Laughed harder than I should have on that Mbappe joke.
One thing to note is that Fiat owns a few luxury car manufacturers, including Ferrari, so a discount on any Fiat car also extends to Ferrari's.
It would be a very fun game tbh i would play that
Damn now imagine how long the vid would be if he ever covers Mexican/Brazilian football fixing/scandal
Definitely going to look into them!
Brazilian football 😆
I would love to see a vid on 2015 barca and 2010 inter
I know its too early to say anything about him, but what are your thoughts on Broja? I got the albanian bias but he's honestly really talented
I'd like to see a follow-up involving the match fixing accusations of Evangelos Marinakis, now that Forrest is promoted and that's in the news again.
Never thought from your old videos you were black ,happy to have a fellow brother killing it on RUclips!
As a longtime Juve fan, I was heartbroken when they got relegated to Serie B. They had talented/skilled players (my favorite till this day and my idol: Zlatan) and they lost almost all of them but I never gave up on the club.
Fiat at this time owned Lancia, Alfa Romeo and Ferrari I doubt those referees were getting discounts for Fiat Puntos 🤣
My man went full savage at the end against Ligue 1 😂
you forgot the headbutt of 06, thay how they won that tourment.
On Netflix their is a show where they go in depth of what was said in the Juventus scandal
those events were 25-26 years apart, it's about time italy revealed another football scandal XD
I love these videos bro, keep up the good work! Idea for a future video, as a Laziali my hero is Ciro Immobile, any chance you could make a video about him in the future?
Please do one about The Greek League man..I'm a die hard Panathinaikos fan,and throughout all this years Olympiakos (out biggest and most hated rivals) have been paying referees and fixing matches only cause they got money..Please bro
You should do barcelona and la liga match fixing
Except that when you’re a top player, you always want to compete against the best. It’s understandable that those players wanted to leave.
@@daniaaal idk man tell that to Neymar and Mbappe lol
@@rwalker0130 haha fair point. Although its not quite the same since juventus weren’t able to pay high wages for the players after the relegation
Although mostly factually correct, that summer of 2006, the Italy team went to the WC with the knowledge of the scandal even though it wasn’t official. That somehow helped to create a good team spirit among the players
Great vid keep up the good work
Bro how many calls went Uniteds way because the referees were scared of Fergie
Ibra and Del Piero in the thumbnail just look so funny lol
Love this Chanel. Good job also can you please make a video on Javier Hernandez (Chicharito)
The farm joke got me spitting out my drink.
Don't forget that at the time Juve put Pessotto in charge of turning the club around and he almost killed himself when he jumped from the club's building
Nottingham Forest playoff game yesterday....
good video man but i i want to see real madrid's run this year :D
Scudetti* Mr. Iconic is a man of culture
