For all the things Wenger did for Arsenal, he was chased out of Arsenal with sticks. Like yeah he was declining as a manager and was not able to keep up with the evolving game but the way he was chased out still leaves a bitter taste. Did you forget how opposing fans used to sing 'Arsene Wenger we want you to stay'? Jesus, people have such a short memory, they remember whatever suits them and their one dimensional view of the world. Every other club wanted Wenger to remain at Arsenal because they knew Arsenal will never be a threat again with him in charge. That's why likes of Gary Neville were saying 'be careful what you wish for' - he knew it is better for United if Wenger stays. Now, signing Emery or Arteta instead is a completely another matter - Wenger had to go, end of story.
It is easier to see these issues more clearly in hindsight. At the time, fans did not know how little was actually invested in the club. Wenger, being a professional, did not speak up against the ownership or the board during his time there. This unfortunately led to him taking the blame for the state of the club and hurting his legacy when the real blame lied with the ownership.

he did a good job seeing Arsenal through the financial transition of the Emirates ( though some poor decisions made in finance to not compete for that long after moving a stadium when we look at other teams not crippled by such a move). Still, he stayed too long and his approach to football was way in the past. Arsenal's scouting had to be totally revamped the past few years because it was so so dated. Football is very data-driven now, and thats not the type of manager AW was. He was also too sentimental to a fault trusting in players that just weren't good enough. AW had to go for the club to change. Even the awkward Emery phase was necessary, but AW was keeping the club in a stagnant state while football kept moving on.
The only manager in premier league history to win the title undefeated, got us champions league football for 16yrs back to back despite not having any transfer funds because of new stadium cost. Wenger deserves respect

His tactics left a lot to be desired for in his last years, as well as his inability to instill a fighting spirit in the team and the defensive fragility. Having said that, he was not supported enough in the transfer market (especially after the stadium was built) and his late 90s - early 00s period cements him as an Arsenal legend, Arsene's Invincibles will always be a legendary side.

Wenger made Arsenal relevant all over the World. His style of Football made people connect with Arsenal. He revolutionalised English Football and people like me from the Countries became fans of Football and Arsenal - begun to like Football because of him and Ferguson. He wasn't backed financially and he still kept Arsenal relevant for more than 2 decades. Cannot think of any other manager other than these two legends to do it for so long and SAF was backed every single year of his reign.
Wenger's clubs always played good footie until his retirement. Wenger's players also IMO got better under him, there just wasn't much talent at the end. I think his biggest problem was that he just kept selling his best players to rival clubs. He pretty much gave the title to Man U when he handed them RVP a title they could have won w/ VanPersie (the whole thanks for the league title here's Danny Welbeck was just twisting the knife). For a while it also seemed like Arsenal was Man City's farm club. And OK sure, players want to go sometimes, and if say City wants to pay for a squad player like when spurs sold Kyle Walker, fine, but for the stars just jeez ship them out the country like Liverpool or Spurs do.
I loved Wenger and I get the financial backing argument m, but apart from Sol Campbell, how many world class centre backs did he develop like he did with attacking players? Wenger is the legend. Only 2 out of 21 years outside the top 4.. Post Wenger, Arsenal finished 8th and 8th despite the massive investments. Just to remind everyone that Wenger did that with players like Chamakh, Squilaci and relying on academy products. Such an achievement.
A giant of a man, with an even bigger legacy. Building a new stadium was ahead of its time. You only have to look at spurs and other clubs for the costs involved now. The stadium is his legacy. That and he made arsenal relevant and competitive over his era. England is blessed to have a lot of clubs with rich histories and trophies in the cabinet but he took arsenal to another level. Relevant in terms of arsenal being considered a big 2 then 4 the 6 club during a time of massive media exposure. Losing dein was the biggest blow and I think wenger took on more responsibility with getting the transfer right/making the numbers add up. Spot on about viera. In the latter years arsenal were viewed as a bit soft and wenger never brought or found another viera type player who be offended at the though of losing. I think in his 2nd last season arsenal finished 5th with 75 points. Probably the highest points total for a club that missed out on champions league football. Honestly all things being equal I think he worked miracles at the club, played entertaining football and if any of us were playing a football manager game we all be aiming to replicate everything he achieved.

To be fair to Arsene's "detractors," they only got loud in his last 3 seasons with the club which the club was falling in those years. To them, it seemed like the wheels were falling off with Wenger in charge (which they were starting to) while clubs like Man City and Chelsea were getting new managers and winning league titles. I used to follow AFTV and a lot of people just look at the shouting and ranting as if these people really hated Arsene. They were annoyed with him staying "too long" but more fed up with the club. They acknowledge his legacy but felt the club shouldn't simply be defined by only him. For me, the writing on the wall for Arsene was blowing the league to Leicester City in 2016. All of the big clubs except Arsenal were doing poorly, were out of sorts and in transition phases so it was the easiest opportunity to win the league and then blew it to a club that had narrowly escaped relegation the previous season, had a fraction of the salary, who Arsenal also defeated both home & away. That was quite the indictment on Arsene's ability.
Everything past 2015 was a joke. The summer window of 2015 was such a slap into the face. If Wenger thought: This is the best side I can assamble + Cech, than Arsenal fans weren't that delusional to say:Wtf? As a rival fan (Chelsea) I can't lie I never felt Arsenal were a serious threat for the last 10 years or so of his reign, one thing in particular where I really understood Arsenal fans frustrations was his 'pet project' players - he gave players who were never gunna be good enough WAY too much time rather than cutting loose, but I was very much in the "be careful what you wish for" camp all the same. He was keeping them in the conversation all the time with squads that could've easily fallen away under lesser managers. If your name wasn't stoke and your below 13th in the table .. you had a hard time. This is where he got his points from. Have we got a manager till now, that can replecate that? No. One thing that does not get mentioned is the carry job that mainly Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Özil did till 2017. There were some quality players offensively. But sorry. He never brought a good keeper or a really good defender past ~ 2010 into the club with or without money. And the Mustafi Xhaka Laca, Mkhi transfers were by far not his best signings. It was just piling up. The club failed at having a plan after him. By far. So many wrong choices by the wrong people. It took a shipwreck for people to realize, that this boat doesn't float itself.

The combination of the stadium, selling their best players to sign mediocre players while his rivals continue to strengthen and failure to adapt to the ever changing climate of football has lead Wenger to his inevitable downfall. The seasons he should have won the Premier League title is 2008, 2014 and 2016. 2008 to be fair wasn't his fault. Eduardo Da Silva suffered a horrific injury so brutal that the broadcasters had to censor the images on TV against Birmingham. After that the wheels fell off. 2014 despite ending their 9 year trophy drought and signing Mesut Ozil, he couldn't get the job done plus getting humiliated by his rivals 6-3 against City, 5-1 against Liverpool and 6-0 against Chelsea. 2016 was the year where the Manchester clubs weren't at it, Liverpool were mid table mediocrity and Chelsea had a season from hell. Wenger should have invested on a striker when he had the chance but signed a declining Cech and Elneny in the January window. In the end, relegation fodder Leicester City went on to do the unthinkable and won the Premier League title. After that it went up in smoke and failed to get Champions League football on his final 2 years. Arsenal's last Champions League appearance was in 2017 when they got slapped 10-2 on aggregate against Bayern. Those three year I've highlighted was the years Arsenal should have won the league. One wasn't his fault but the other 2 he screwed up. Wenger is partly responsible for the downfall of Arsenal but they were circumstances that played a role in the decline like forced to sell their best players to finance the Emirates stadium, signing mediocre players and youths never setting a light, change of board and ownership and rivals having more money to strengthen their teams while Arsenal was left behind. Blaming Wenger for everything wrong at Arsenal is wrong. He did get Champions League football every year with poor players and won the FA cup with these sorry lot.

I can't find anything to disagree in this video. However, there are some serious omissions. The chaos at the start of the 2011-12 season made it clear that the manager's job was too big for just one man. Wenger was too stubborn to see this and to accept that he had to work with other people on recruitment allowing himself to focus on managing the first team. Secondly, Arsenal consistently allowed players to run down contracts instead of selling them when they refused to commit to a new deal. For example, Alexis was exchanged for Miki 6 months after Arsenal turned down a £50m offer from City. Had Kroenke taken more control of transfers and managed them with the bottom line in mind, the performances might not have improved but the financial side of the club would have been better. Thirdly, transfer purchases in later years were chronically poor. Mustafi is usually highlighted but he was far from the worst centre-back Wenger bought. Fourthly, both Fabiański and Szczęsny played poorly for Arsenal but have gone on to have successful careers elsewhere (Juve!). They have criticised the goalkeeping coaching at Arsenal. Fifthly, Wenger has been quoted as preferring to focus on strengths rather than weaknesses, buying Ozil after a game in which Arsenal's defensive frailties had been exposed. He refused to learn from heavy defeats. Sixthly, despite having Adams and Vieira in his first decade at Arsenal, Wenger did not seem to value leadership and attitude.

I'm not normally one to comment on Football RUclips videos, but I think you have got this fairly close to the mark. The bit that you seemed to gloss over was how the landscape of the ownership model of Football changed while Arsenal were under such financial constraints with the new stadium. They made the decision to move grounds and then the Billionaires came into the game. At that point, Arsenal were in a no man's land and had to proceed and adjust. It was very unfortunate and quite unpredictable. It is a testament to Wenger that he kept Arsenal competitive during this time. Yes, he made some mistakes and yes, he remained loyal to some players for longer than he should have. Ultimately though, the ownership of the club is front and centre. Kronke is a cancer on this club and Wenger attempted to hold the Footballing side together by showing loyalty to the owner. That has always been his default position, but was ultimately the reason why he came in for such criticism from the fans. Most could not see the behind the scenes and laid the blame at his feet, largely because he fronted the club and accepted the criticism. It was only after Wenger left that most fans began to see the reality of the problems caused by the owners.

That was very true of the 5-6 years following the completion of the stadium, it is indeed very hard when you have to compete with United who already have a large stadium, Chelsea who have sugar daddy funding and no plans to move to a bigger stadium (so no costs) and Man City who had a stadium built and sold to them for peanuts. However when you look at 2013 onwards, the stadium construction costs have been almost paid back and Wenger is having large budgets to work with. Yet that was arguably the worst part of his 18 years in charge.
Kroenke's have gotten a lot of blame and i dont know a single fan who likes their ownership. Kroenke's, gazidis and AW all share some blame in the downfall. And yes, some just unfortunate timing as well with the stadium which was such a huge burden for way too long.

As a young boy (who isn't British) I legit though Arsenal was named after Wenger, he became their manager before I was born and left after I hit my 21th birthday. I grew out of that, but still think that idea is endearing lol
This was a very good analysis. I had started to see Arsenal as a discount Barcelona and this provides some explanation for that in the form of Cesc Fabregas. They could very fun to watch...at times. But at least as often they could be frustrating.
Wenger's legacy will only get better over time. Hindsight is a wonderful thing. We really had it good whilst he was here, and what he did for the club will have an impact for many more years to come.
After Arsenal won the invincle season, the scouting team asked for Essien, got told they had a 5 mil budget.. Steve Rowley, the man who discovered Tony Adams, quit after the signing of Xhaka and Mustafi. Why not ask your Klopp, Guardiola, Pochettino or whoever to work in these conditions. See how many years before they quit.
There was also the resignation of David Dein over some boardroom stuff. Him and Wenger were a perfectly functional duo. Dein was replaced by incompetent people, indeed of a much lower calibre than the collaborators of Klopp and Guardiola.
Imo Wenger was an idealist. He would persist rather than change. That's what did for him in the end. There was a time when im sure he thought Arsenal could play in the premiership with diminutive players like Barca. At that time Barca were the best team in Europe. To me he didn't full accept that the Premier League is officiated differently than in Spain. He would spend large amounts of money on attack minded players like a Arshavin, Ozill, but neglect his defense. If those players weren't working out he would persist rather than admit wrong doing. He would look to buy bargain basement CB's. That coupled with small midfield players meant Arsenal had no steal to exist in the Premiership against aggressive direct teams who would benefit from the reffereeing approach in England that allowed you to be more aggresive. To his detriment he was held back by financial restraints but he had an all too cosy relationship with the board. He was not the type of guy to lay the blame at their feet and kept everything in house. The fans therefore turned their frustrations on him. The board were happy ticking along getting the CL qualification money and spending little. Wenger had become too big at the club and was able to turn his tenure into his own personal project to massage his ego. He was a great manager but he became too big for Arsenal imo. There was no accountability and that meant the pressure wasn't there to learn from mistakes.

Arsenal was bound to sink but Arsene Wenger managed to keep them up as long as he could that’s why at the end of his reign, he started to be out of his depth. The Arsenal fans wanted Wenger out because of « 4th is a trophy » and now finishing in the top 4 is their biggest ambition.
Arsene Wenger is the reason why I became an Arsenal fan. The journey with this great man in charge of the club has been very joyful. The last years weren’t pleasant to watch how the team was declining, but I have never lost a faith in this man. He will be remembered as an Arsenal hero alongside many other great players if his time.

Wenger revolutioised football from the late '90s, ahead of his time.Without Wenger rivalry there would never have been those Man U teams. They fueled each other and fans were rewarded,winning or not it was world class competition. Every side on the planet realised they needed to shape up or be left behind. In my opinion the 1998-2008 Arsenal teams were absolutely fantastic to watch, last of the old guard tough physical teams before them, first of the new high-paced artists that injected the Wenger philosophies and skilled enough to pull it off without making it look difficult.

Fabrigas could be a club legend if he had stayed and in course we could have achieved PL. He was undoubtedly one of the few best playmakers while his time at arsenal. A revelation in his first ten years. But wasnt the same Manager in his next ten years. And to much of a yes man for the Arsenal board. Almost acting like their accountant. And he should have stood down when he and Arsenal won their first major honour in 9 Years, (FA Cup) in 2014 And still Qualified for the Champions league. In which Wenger failed to do in his last two season of his tenure. 2016/17, 2017/18
He secured Arsenals longterm future, what he came into and what he left for others to build upon were light years apart. New Stadium, World Class Academy, financially stable, the list goes on.
I’m an Arsenal fan, but in England the landscape of the game kept evolving. You couldn’t do tiki-taka season after season after season. You got found out. Wenger didn’t have an eye for evolution, Plan B or most importantly, defence. In his time, Fergie bought Stam, Ferdinand, Vidic. Apart from Sol Campbell (on came in on a free) I can’t name one world class centre back he signed or developed. He didn’t need money to create attacking players, so why couldn’t he create a solid defence with the same resources? Create a team that was hard to crack. There was no trophy for pretty football at the end of the season. It was same old, same old for years and Arsenal just got found out
Wenger was similar to Mourinho in the way he was stubborn against criticism. Wenger as manager isn't responsible for the club's finances, he only manages/coaches the playing squad. Ok, the manager is involved in conversations about the list of transfer targets and how to prioritise them, and a long-term manager like Wenger gets a bigger say than the short-term managers today. Wengers reduced squad budget would've been frustrating for him as well as the fans. But I suppose he should've balanced his new total football, possession based team out with 2 or 3 tough guys in amongst them. What was worst for the match goers was that they were watching this reduced budget team, but they were paying for the most expensive tickets of any club in the world... the fans only live once. They work for their money, pay for tickets, and want to support genuine ambition to compete for the top titles, and their club weren't doing that. Wenger had a great track record of developing talents other coaches hadn't rated as highly... but he pushed that squad budget-management too far in the end.
That is already in the talks. Also... patience! He not too long ago left the club. If it were more than a decade or a decade and a half since he left and there no trace of any commemoration of him that then that's when you'd start to question things
8 years of almost unrivaled success followed by 14 years of abject failure. I mean everyone wants to pretend he was great, but if he was so great, why did he not manage to land another managerial job after Arsenal? He made his intention to continue coaching known, so it's not like he wanted to retire, he's constantly being linked with new jobs as recently as August of 2021 but nothing ever happens. Because he wasn't as good as people let on, he had a touch that faded way before 2010, you can say that the cautious approach he was forced to adopt during the stadium years stunted his ability to challenge for anything in the years after the stadium was done. I mean there were at least two seasons that Arsenal should definitely have won between 2013 and 2018, but one was the season where no big teams made any big moves, the Premier League was the least competitive in years, Arsenal could of had a great team had Wenger spent more than 10 in the transfer market to buy a better striker and defender but... Leicester ended up winning that season instead. I felt that after that, that was the end of Wenger's time in Arsenal, the season after Arsenal slumped to their worst finish under Wenger and started the decent into mid table obscurity. There is a good reason why Wenger hasn't got a job now.
Another point is wenger had a good set of defenders in the beginning because of which arsenal were able to compete well with manutd. But then after those players retired he replaced them with toure who was not even a defender. How did a brilliant manager replace genius defenders with kolo toure? This defensive weakness is why arsenal couldnt beat manutd for so many years since offensively henry was there. This is why manutd swept the league for so many years even though arsenal had henry and bergkamp. People act like arsenal were in the top 2 with substandard players. Which doesnt make sense. Henry bergkamp pires vieira were alm amazing players. What arsenal missed was defensive strength. And arsenal was leaking goals to inferior teams and getting draws while manutd was edging wins because defensively they were strong.

A very good video. The only reason Arsenal were unable to compete for the title post-2004 was because of all the money being spent on the Emirates. In fact, without a manager as good as Wenger, Arsenal would never have been able to make the top four as consistently as they did. He worked wonders even with severely reduced resources.
Look at the teams that have constantly beaten Arsenal (on the pitch or on the table) and its those few teams that just keep spending hundreds of millions on the best players. Arsenal did not adapt to this. On top of that, we lost the good talents we developed, and also signed some flukes. I think its this simple: our squad quality deteriorated and there were some other clubs kept improving and still do every year. Some of our youngsters signed were amazing, but they were gone after 1 good season or even before exploding (see gnabry)
He consistently got top 4 with the likes of Kieran Giibs, Frimpong, Squilachi, Gervinho, Alex Song, Park Chi Sung, I could go on and on. Just average players. He had an amazing core with world class players like RVP and Fabregas, Ramsey, Koscienly that he identified for almost no money. The problem was simply a lack of transfer funds for a good bench. Look af Guardiola and even Arteta now. They buy players for £100 million for the bench. There is never a weak length in the team and when a key player goes down with injury there is an adeauate back up. Wenger was an absolute genius during this time. I sincrrely believe we were much closer than people realised and with just slightly more money - we wouldnt have lost Ashley Cole and we would have had just enough depth overall to allow the world class players like Fabregas to carry us to a title or two. Either way, Wengers achievements during this time actually amazing and are conpletely underated and distored. He could not have dine any better
And now, as an arsenal fan, I expect 6 points from Manchester United, Chelsea and Tottenham every season. Arteta's transfer and wage funding was essentially secured by Arsene Wenger. Exciting times for Arsenal.

He wasn’t directly responsible, but indirectly responsible. He should’ve left earlier, him leaving was what was needed for change but he stayed on way too long. Sometimes if you really love something but you’re part of what’s holding it back, you leave in order to let it flourish. But he didn’t, he stayed and in my opinion he’s therefore partly but not fully responsible for the general complacency and relative lack of trophies from 2005 - 2018
another link with Klopp, he managed to break the hegemony of Bayern Munich, arguably the Man United of the Bundesliga. A league luckily not suffering from shaky sheikhs or greedy gringos, as the Premier League fell victim to... hence why Arsenall fell back against the PL competition and Dortmund could keep their 2nd/3rd team and CL qualifier status.
The main problem with Wenger in his later years is that he seemed to forget that the defensive side of the ball actually existed, tactically he was often lacklustre on that side of the ball (the offensive side remained pretty good throughout) and it cost Arsenal many times especially in the Champions League, he never seemed to learn or adapt and he continued to make the same mistakes over and over again so Arsenal fans like myself had seen enough at a point and justifiably wanted the club to move on which I feel happened about 5 years too late
While his signings and decisions leave a lot to be desired, he’s undoubtedly the reason I watched Arsenal. Not just for his achievements, but for the beautiful football the crafted throughout his time there.
As an arsenal fan that went through the agony and joy of all those years, I think there's some valid points and some not so . Here's the main ppints I feel you missed - Getting a good goalkeeper - Wenger stuck with Almunia who wasn't good enough and then Fabianski while he could have been smart and gotten a Shay given or Joe Hart from the smaller clubs. I disagree with the move from Viera to Cesc. We also had players like Diaby who never really shone because of injuries. Critical injuries - Eduardo was a big injury during an important and probably one of the best seasons i've seen under Arsene. Keeping players like Denilson, Sanogo, Silvestre, Santos were big errors. Overall Wenger was and still is a legend but he had to go, and Arsenal are rebuilding. they aren't anyway in the dumbs. Finally I agree history will be kind to him for sure, but the decision to let him go when we did, I completely back.

Not watched the video yet but the player quality went down after the Invincibles season. Between 96 and 05 they had the likes of Tony Adams, Sol Campbell, Bergkamp, Vieira, Henry, Pires, Ljungberg, Seaman, Lehmann, Ashley Cole and loads more. That was just top of my head. Beween 06 and 18 they had Nasri, Bendtner, Chamakh, Gervinho, Szczesny, Alex Song. The drop off is almost laughable.
How many other managers would get top 4 with Chamakh, bendtner, Miguel and other mediocre players. In 2011 Arsenal had to sell clichy, fabregas and nasri who were integral players without having the necessary funds to replace them properly. It was a feat to keep us in the top 4, obviously the quality of the league was lower but it is also worth noting he held on 3-4 years too long which set us back 10 years.
For all those saying he didnt deserve tp be questioned towards the end of his time as manager, every new contract he got himself a big payrise despite his decline, also signing only petr cech in a summer trasnfer window is madness
Arsenal's decline was no fault of Wenger's, it was purely down to the lack of investment from the board. His genius kept Arsenal relevant and they have fallen off a cliff ever since he left.

Jesus, people have such a short memory, they remember whatever suits them and their one dimensional view of the world. Every other club wanted Wenger to remain at Arsenal because they knew Arsenal will never be a threat again with him in charge. That's why likes of Gary Neville were saying 'be careful what you wish for' - he knew it is better for United if Wenger stays. It is easier to see these issues more clearly in hindsight. At the time, fans did not know how little was actually invested in the club. Wenger, being a professional, did not speak up against the ownership or the board during his time there. This unfortunately led to him taking the blame for the state of the club and hurting his legacy when the real blame lied with the ownership.

he did a good job seeing Arsenal through the financial transition of the Emirates ( though some poor decisions made in finance to not compete for that long after moving a stadium when we look at other teams not crippled by such a move). Still, he stayed too long and his approach to football was way in the past. Arsenal's scouting had to be totally revamped the past few years because it was so so dated. Football is very data-driven now, and thats not the type of manager AW was. He was also too sentimental to a fault trusting in players that just weren't good enough. AW had to go for the club to change. Even the awkward Emery phase was necessary, but AW was keeping the club in a stagnant state while football kept moving on.

His tactics left a lot to be desired for in his last years, as well as his inability to instill a fighting spirit in the team and the defensive fragility. Having said that, he was not supported enough in the transfer market (especially after the stadium was built) and his late 90s - early 00s period cements him as an Arsenal legend, Arsene's Invincibles will always be a legendary side.

Wenger made Arsenal relevant all over the World. His style of Football made people connect with Arsenal. He revolutionalised English Football and people like me from the Countries became fans of Football and Arsenal - begun to like Football because of him and Ferguson. He wasn't backed financially and he still kept Arsenal relevant for more than 2 decades. Cannot think of any other manager other than these two legends to do it for so long and SAF was backed every single year of his reign.
Wenger's clubs always played good footie until his retirement. Wenger's players also IMO got better under him, there just wasn't much talent at the end. I think his biggest problem was that he just kept selling his best players to rival clubs. He pretty much gave the title to Man U when he handed them RVP a title they could have won w/ VanPersie (the whole thanks for the league title here's Danny Welbeck was just twisting the knife). For a while it also seemed like Arsenal was Man City's farm club. And OK sure, players want to go sometimes, and if say City wants to pay for a squad player like when spurs sold Kyle Walker, fine, but for the stars just jeez ship them out the country like Liverpool or Spurs do.

A giant of a man, with an even bigger legacy. Building a new stadium was ahead of its time. You only have to look at spurs and other clubs for the costs involved now. The stadium is his legacy. That and he made arsenal relevant and competitive over his era. England is blessed to have a lot of clubs with rich histories and trophies in the cabinet but he took arsenal to another level. Relevant in terms of arsenal being considered a big 2 then 4 the 6 club during a time of massive media exposure. Losing dein was the biggest blow and I think wenger took on more responsibility with getting the transfer right/making the numbers add up. Spot on about viera. In the latter years arsenal were viewed as a bit soft and wenger never brought or found another viera type player who be offended at the though of losing. I think in his 2nd last season arsenal finished 5th with 75 points. Probably the highest points total for a club that missed out on champions league football. Honestly all things being equal I think he worked miracles at the club, played entertaining football and if any of us were playing a football manager game we all be aiming to replicate everything he achieved.

To be fair to Arsene's "detractors," they only got loud in his last 3 seasons with the club which the club was falling in those years. To them, it seemed like the wheels were falling off with Wenger in charge (which they were starting to) while clubs like Man City and Chelsea were getting new managers and winning league titles. I used to follow AFTV and a lot of people just look at the shouting and ranting as if these people really hated Arsene. They were annoyed with him staying "too long" but more fed up with the club. They acknowledge his legacy but felt the club shouldn't simply be defined by only him.
For me, the writing on the wall for Arsene was blowing the league to Leicester City in 2016. All of the big clubs except Arsenal were doing poorly, were out of sorts and in transition phases so it was the easiest opportunity to win the league and then blew it to a club that had narrowly escaped relegation the previous season, had a fraction of the salary, who Arsenal also defeated both home & away. That was quite the indictment on Arsene's ability.
Everything past 2015 was a joke. The summer window of 2015 was such a slap into the face. If Wenger thought: This is the best side I can assamble + Cech, than Arsenal fans weren't that delusional to say:Wtf?
I also think the magnifying effect of people shouting on Social media-making everyone else believe all Arsenal fans are against him, is overstated. The years of not spending but charging exuberant were the build up for the pay off of his last few years. And the pay off was not good at all.
It's difficult. As a rival fan (Chelsea) I can't lie I never felt Arsenal were a serious threat for the last 10 years or so of his reign, one thing in particular where I really understood Arsenal fans frustrations was his 'pet project' players - he gave players who were never gunna be good enough WAY too much time rather than cutting loose, but I was very much in the "be careful what you wish for" camp all the same. He was keeping them in the conversation all the time with squads that could've easily fallen away under lesser managers.
The match where I felt maybe it's time for him to step aside was the 0-3 defeat vs. City in the league, after the 0-3 defeat in the League Cup final. Even as a Chelsea fan that was depressing to watch lol

If your name wasn't stoke and your below 13th in the table .. you had a hard time. This is where he got his points from. Have we got a manager till now, that can replecate that? No. One thing that does not get mentioned is the carry job that mainly Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Özil did till 2017. There were some quality players offensively. But sorry. He never brought a good keeper or a really good defender past ~ 2010 into the club with or without money. And the Mustafi Xhaka Laca, Mkhi transfers were by far not his best signings. It was just piling up.

Problem is: They said: Arsene please go now. Thing is the guys like Gazidis and Raul Sanlehi that chose the next manager were total frauds and we partialy knew it. They would have never managed the situation well and I give my word on that. Heck the move after was also risky af. And what we are hanging on atm is the hope, that he will develop into a good one. But the options were dry too (Benitez, Mourinho at that time).
We had an identity ... which also based on failing over and over and beeing a pushover. Its not the whole but it is a big one. Also the mystic about Wenger was held up very well. No one was allowed to do any critiscism in public without getting bombarded, because : Oh he was so good in the past. But in the present (2010s) You would not have called him a wordclass manager.
In the end he would have had to step down one day. And it was hardly getting any better. Lots of people didn't want to see him continuebin order to not see him struggle.
We wouldn't have dipped as low in 2020/21 with him. But one day, hebwould have stepped down and we would have had to go through the struggle. There is biologicly no way around it. And to build a longterm project around a close to 70 year old is also a hard sell. That isn't sustainable by itself.

It was never "his fault"! He helped to transform the club, the English football, and to give us many joys and unforgettable moments. At the last end, he was still doing an amazing job, give the pieces that he has, and in the same era that his directly competitors were basically "dream teams".
Though I am a Chelsea fan, I really liked how Arsenal played back in 03-04, infact many of my friends became arsenal fans during this era. Interesting insight though.

The combination of the stadium, selling their best players to sign mediocre players while his rivals continue to strengthen and failure to adapt to the ever changing climate of football has lead Wenger to his inevitable downfall.
The seasons he should have won the Premier League title is 2008, 2014 and 2016. 2008 to be fair wasn't his fault. Eduardo Da Silva suffered a horrific injury so brutal that the broadcasters had to censor the images on TV against Birmingham. After that the wheels fell off. 2014 despite ending their 9 year trophy drought and signing Mesut Ozil, he couldn't get the job done plus getting humiliated by his rivals 6-3 against City, 5-1 against Liverpool and 6-0 against Chelsea. 2016 was the year where the Manchester clubs weren't at it, Liverpool were mid table mediocrity and Chelsea had a season from hell. Wenger should have invested on a striker when he had the chance but signed a declining Cech and Elneny in the January window. In the end, relegation fodder Leicester City went on to do the unthinkable and won the Premier League title. After that it went up in smoke and failed to get Champions League football on his final 2 years. Arsenal's last Champions League appearance was in 2017 when they got slapped 10-2 on aggregate against Bayern. Those three year I've highlighted was the years Arsenal should have won the league. One wasn't his fault but the other 2 he screwed up.
Wenger is partly responsible for the downfall of Arsenal but they were circumstances that played a role in the decline like forced to sell their best players to finance the Emirates stadium, signing mediocre players and youths never setting a light, change of board and ownership and rivals having more money to strengthen their teams while Arsenal was left behind. Blaming Wenger for everything wrong at Arsenal is wrong. He did get Champions League football every year with poor players and won the FA cup with these sorry lot.
Should have stood down in 2014 when he and Arsenal won their first Major Honour in 9 Years (FA Cup). He didn't even Qualify for top 4 in last two seasons. He was acting like the clubs accountant than that of a manager in his latter years

I can't find anything to disagree in this video. However, there are some serious omissions. The chaos at the start of the 2011-12 season made it clear that the manager's job was too big for just one man. Wenger was too stubborn to see this and to accept that he had to work with other people on recruitment allowing himself to focus on managing the first team. Secondly, Arsenal consistently allowed players to run down contracts instead of selling them when they refused to commit to a new deal. For example, Alexis was exchanged for Miki 6 months after Arsenal turned down a £50m offer from City. Had Kroenke taken more control of transfers and managed them with the bottom line in mind, the performances might not have improved but the financial side of the club would have been better. Thirdly, transfer purchases in later years were chronically poor. Mustafi is usually highlighted but he was far from the worst centre-back Wenger bought. Fourthly, both Fabiański and Szczęsny played poorly for Arsenal but have gone on to have successful careers elsewhere (Juve!). They have criticised the goalkeeping coaching at Arsenal. Fifthly, Wenger has been quoted as preferring to focus on strengths rather than weaknesses, buying Ozil after a game in which Arsenal's defensive frailties had been exposed. He refused to learn from heavy defeats. Sixthly, despite having Adams and Vieira in his first decade at Arsenal, Wenger did not seem to value leadership and attitude.

I'm not normally one to comment on Football RUclips videos, but I think you have got this fairly close to the mark. The bit that you seemed to gloss over was how the landscape of the ownership model of Football changed while Arsenal were under such financial constraints with the new stadium. They made the decision to move grounds and then the Billionaires came into the game. At that point, Arsenal were in a no man's land and had to proceed and adjust. It was very unfortunate and quite unpredictable. It is a testament to Wenger that he kept Arsenal competitive during this time. Yes, he made some mistakes and yes, he remained loyal to some players for longer than he should have. Ultimately though, the ownership of the club is front and centre. Kronke is a cancer on this club and Wenger attempted to hold the Footballing side together by showing loyalty to the owner. That has always been his default position, but was ultimately the reason why he came in for such criticism from the fans. Most could not see the behind the scenes and laid the blame at his feet, largely because he fronted the club and accepted the criticism. It was only after Wenger left that most fans began to see the reality of the problems caused by the owners.
Cheers for the comment! That is a very good point that I hadn't thought about. How were they supposed to know that Billionaires would start using football teams as pet project. Really hard situation to be in having just made such a huge commitment.
That was very true of the 5-6 years following the completion of the stadium, it is indeed very hard when you have to compete with United who already have a large stadium, Chelsea who have sugar daddy funding and no plans to move to a bigger stadium (so no costs) and Man City who had a stadium built and sold to them for peanuts. However when you look at 2013 onwards, the stadium construction costs have been almost paid back and Wenger is having large budgets to work with. Yet that was arguably the worst part of his 18 years in charge.
Kroenke's have gotten a lot of blame and i dont know a single fan who likes their ownership. Kroenke's, gazidis and AW all share some blame in the downfall. And yes, some just unfortunate timing as well with the stadium which was such a huge burden for way too long.

This was a very good analysis. I had started to see Arsenal as a discount Barcelona and this provides some explanation for that in the form of Cesc Fabregas. They could very fun to watch...at times. But at least as often they could be frustrating.
Wenger's legacy will only get better over time. Hindsight is a wonderful thing. We really had it good whilst he was here, and what he did for the club will have an impact for many more years to come.

There was also the resignation of David Dein over some boardroom stuff. Him and Wenger were a perfectly functional duo. Dein was replaced by incompetent people, indeed of a much lower calibre than the collaborators of Klopp and Guardiola.
Imo Wenger was an idealist. He would persist rather than change. That's what did for him in the end. There was a time when im sure he thought Arsenal could play in the premiership with diminutive players like Barca. At that time Barca were the best team in Europe. To me he didn't full accept that the Premier League is officiated differently than in Spain. He would spend large amounts of money on attack minded players like a Arshavin, Ozill, but neglect his defense. If those players weren't working out he would persist rather than admit wrong doing. He would look to buy bargain basement CB's. That coupled with small midfield players meant Arsenal had no steal to exist in the Premiership against aggressive direct teams who would benefit from the reffereeing approach in England that allowed you to be more aggresive. To his detriment he was held back by financial restraints but he had an all too cosy relationship with the board. He was not the type of guy to lay the blame at their feet and kept everything in house. The fans therefore turned their frustrations on him. The board were happy ticking along getting the CL qualification money and spending little. Wenger had become too big at the club and was able to turn his tenure into his own personal project to massage his ego. He was a great manager but he became too big for Arsenal imo. There was no accountability and that meant the pressure wasn't there to learn from mistakes.

The last years weren’t pleasant to watch how the team was declining, but I have never lost a faith in this man. He will be remembered as an Arsenal hero alongside many other great players if his time.

Wenger revolutioised football from the late '90s, ahead of his time.Without Wenger rivalry there would never have been those Man U teams. They fueled each other and fans were rewarded,winning or not it was world class competition. Every side on the planet realised they needed to shape up or be left behind. In my opinion the 1998-2008 Arsenal teams were absolutely fantastic to watch, last of the old guard tough physical teams before them, first of the new high-paced artists that injected the Wenger philosophies and skilled enough to pull it off without making it look difficult.

Given Arsene failed to realise that his vision for Arsenal just wasn't going to cut it, 7 clubs have won a PL title in 31 seasons. Only 4 have won multiple. The reality is that from 2004/2005 onwards in order to win a PL you had to have some deep pockets and while Leicester won in 2015-2016 Arsenal came within spitting distance in 07-08 where unfortunately they dropped crucial points after Eduardo's horrible leg break.

Fabrigas could be a club legend if he had stayed and in course we could have achieved PL. He was undoubtedly one of the few best playmakers while his time at arsenal. I vaguely remember watching him coming as a sub and scoring two goals around 2008-09. He made me fall in love with Arsenal and how they play and from then the mostly searched string in my web browser history were "Arsenal Transfer news " and "cesc fabrigas". it was a poetry on field and i was deeply hurt when he left for Barcelona.

I’m an Arsenal fan, but in England the landscape of the game kept evolving. You couldn’t do tiki-taka season after season after season. You got found out. Wenger didn’t have an eye for evolution, Plan B or most importantly, defence. In his time, Fergie bought Stam, Ferdinand, Vidic. Apart from Sol Campbell (on came in on a free) I can’t name one world class centre back he signed or developed. He didn’t need money to create attacking players, so why couldn’t he create a solid defence with the same resources? Create a team that was hard to crack. There was no trophy for pretty football at the end of the season. It was same old, same old for years and Arsenal just got found out

Wenger was similar to Mourinho in the way he was stubborn against criticism. Wenger as manager isn't responsible for the club's finances, he only manages/coaches the playing squad. Ok, the manager is involved in conversations about the list of transfer targets and how to prioritise them, and a long-term manager like Wenger gets a bigger say than the short-term managers today. Wengers reduced squad budget would've been frustrating for him as well as the fans. But I suppose he should've balanced his new total football, possession based team out with 2 or 3 tough guys in amongst them.
What was worst for the match goers was that they were watching this reduced budget team, but they were paying for the most expensive tickets of any club in the world... the fans only live once. They work for their money, pay for tickets, and want to support genuine ambition to compete for the top titles, and their club weren't doing that.
Wenger had a great track record of developing talents other coaches hadn't rated as highly... but he pushed that squad budget-management too far in the end.

8 years of almost unrivaled success followed by 14 years of abject failure.
I mean everyone wants to pretend he was great, but if he was so great, why did he not manage to land another managerial job after Arsenal? He made his intention to continue coaching known, so it's not like he wanted to retire, he's constantly being linked with new jobs as recently as August of 2021 but nothing ever happens.
Because he wasn't as good as people let on, he had a touch that faded way before 2010, you can say that the cautious approach he was forced to adopt during the stadium years stunted his ability to challenge for anything in the years after the stadium was done.
I mean there were at least two seasons that Arsenal should definitely have won between 2013 and 2018, but one was the season where no big teams made any big moves, the Premier League was the least competitive in years, Arsenal could of had a great team had Wenger spent more than 10 in the transfer market to buy a better striker and defender but... Leicester ended up winning that season instead.
I felt that after that, that was the end of Wenger's time in Arsenal, the season after Arsenal slumped to their worst finish under Wenger and started the decent into mid table obscurity.
There is a good reason why Wenger hasn't got a job now.
Another point is wenger had a good set of defenders in the beginning because of which arsenal were able to compete well with manutd. But then after those players retired he replaced them with toure who was not even a defender. How did a brilliant manager replace genius defenders with kolo toure? This defensive weakness is why arsenal couldnt beat manutd for so many years since offensively henry was there. This is why manutd swept the league for so many years even though arsenal had henry and bergkamp. People act like arsenal were in the top 2 with substandard players. Which doesnt make sense. Henry bergkamp pires vieira were alm amazing players. What arsenal missed was defensive strength. And arsenal was leaking goals to inferior teams and getting draws while manutd was edging wins because defensively they were strong.

A very good video. The only reason Arsenal were unable to compete for the title post-2004 was because of all the money being spent on the Emirates. In fact, without a manager as good as Wenger, Arsenal would never have been able to make the top four as consistently as they did. He worked wonders even with severely reduced resources.

Look at the teams that have constantly beaten Arsenal (on the pitch or on the table) and its those few teams that just keep spending hundreds of millions on the best players. Arsenal did not adapt to this. On top of that, we lost the good talents we developed, and also signed some flukes. I think its this simple: our squad quality deteriorated and there were some other clubs kept improving and still do every year.
Some of our youngsters signed were amazing, but they were gone after 1 good season or even before exploding (see gnabry)

He consistently got top 4 with the likes of Kieran Giibs, Frimpong, Squilachi, Gervinho, Alex Song, Park Chi Sung, I could go on and on. Just average players.
He had an amazing core with world class players like RVP and Fabregas, Ramsey, Koscienly that he identified for almost no money.
The problem was simply a lack of transfer funds for a good bench. Look af Guardiola and even Arteta now. They buy players for £100 million for the bench. There is never a weak length in the team and when a key player goes down with injury there is an adeauate back up.
Wenger was an absolute genius during this time. I sincrrely believe we were much closer than people realised and with just slightly more money - we wouldnt have lost Ashley Cole and we would have had just enough depth overall to allow the world class players like Fabregas to carry us to a title or two.
Either way, Wengers achievements during this time actually amazing and are conpletely underated and distored. He could not have dine any better

Sometimes if you really love something but you’re part of what’s holding it back, you leave in order to let it flourish. But he didn’t, he stayed and in my opinion he’s therefore partly but not fully responsible for the general complacency and relative lack of trophies from 2005 - 2018

The main problem with Wenger in his later years is that he seemed to forget that the defensive side of the ball actually existed, tactically he was often lacklustre on that side of the ball (the offensive side remained pretty good throughout) and it cost Arsenal many times especially in the Champions League, he never seemed to learn or adapt and he continued to make the same mistakes over and over again so Arsenal fans like myself had seen enough at a point and justifiably wanted the club to move on which I feel happened about 5 years too late

As an arsenal fan that went through the agony and joy of all those years, I think there's some valid points and some not so . Here's the main ppints I feel you missed -
Getting a good goalkeeper - Wenger stuck with Almunia who wasn't good enough and then Fabianski while he could have been smart and gotten a Shay given or Joe Hart from the smaller clubs.
I disagree with the move from Viera to Cesc. We also had players like Diaby who never really shone because of injuries.
Critical injuries - Eduardo was a big injury during an important and probably one of the best seasons i've seen under Arsene.
Keeping players like Denilson, Sanogo, Silvestre, Santos were big errors.
Overall Wenger was and still is a legend but he had to go, and Arsenal are rebuilding. they aren't anyway in the dumbs.
Finally I agree history will be kind to him for sure, but the decision to let him go when we did, I completely back.

Beween 06 and 18 they had Nasri, Bendtner, Chamakh, Gervinho, Szczesny, Alex Song. The drop off is almost laughable.

How many other managers would get top 4 with Chamakh, bendtner, Miguel and other mediocre players. In 2011 Arsenal had to sell clichy, fabregas and nasri who were integral players without having the necessary funds to replace them properly. It was a feat to keep us in the top 4, obviously the quality of the league was lower but it is also worth noting he held on 3-4 years too long which set us back 10 years.
For all those saying he didnt deserve tp be questioned towards the end of his time as manager, every new contract he got himself a big payrise despite his decline, also signing only petr cech in a summer trasnfer window is madness
