Tipping pitches is something pitchers try not to do. In last year's world series, Bryce Harper figured out a quirk in the opposing pitcher's delivery that gave him an idea of what pitch was coming. Harper hit a home run and went back to the dugout to tell his teammates what he saw. The pitcher, who is a really good pitcher most of the time, got hammered that night.

Pitchers would normally look for the sign for what pitch to throw, from the catcher, when the catcher would put down a sign for a pitch that the pitcher wouldn't want to throw, they would "shake" them off and the catcher would suggest a different pitch, but now this is done electronically right into the pitcher ear from a device on the catchers wrist, this is all because of the Astros sign stealing scandal which you guys need to look into

  • @peterandjunko
    @peterandjunko Год назад +120

Just to clarify for you - a pitcher typically uses a “windup” motion to generate more speed when there’s no one on base. When base runners are present this can be a liability because it increases the time the ball gets to the catcher which allows runners to steal bases more easily. Therefore pitchers go into the “stretch” when runners are present, which is a quicker motion to deliver the ball and gives the catcher time to potentially throw out runners attempting to steal bases.

@@DNReacts And to add some extra details. Jomboy mentions something called PitchCom. It used to be the catcher would signal to the pitcher what pitch he wants via the fingers on the catchers throwing hand. To simply it, index finger extended by itself would be fastball, two fingers extended is a changeup and so on. However that would be too simple to figure out so catchers would do long sequences of gestures for a pitch. But pitchcom now allows catchers to signal what pitch they want and where by pressing a series of buttons on their sleeve and the pitcher has a receiver in his cap telling him what the catcher wants.

    • @zachengland8208
      @zachengland8208 Год назад +5

This isn't entirely correct. A pitcher would be called for a balk if they pitched from the windup with a runner on base. There also isn't any evidence that pitching from the windup adds velocity to the pitch. In fact, some pitchers actually throw harder from the stretch. A study was done and Justin Verlander was one that threw harder from the stretch than from his windup.

Now a days you might not see as much of the pitcher shaking off the catcher because if the pitch com devices which allow for a catch to call for a certain pitch and sends that call to a receiver that the pitcher is wearing and hear what is being called. There maybe some shake offs even with that. It generally not as many as when the catchers would put down the signs. But the pitch com was created to crack down on cheating with in the game of stealing signs and gaining unfair advantages outside of the rules as to discerning something as game play goes on as. What was show in this video. Look into the 2017 Astros trash can scandal.

Pitchers tend to have "tells" when throwing different pitches. It's not always just where he's looking. It could be a leg lift, an arm wiggle, etc. That's the chess game between the hitters and the batters. The more you see a pitcher and his pitches the bigger the chance of guessing the right pitch. Some pitches are better at others at hiding what they're doing

Hey guys, loving everything on the channel especially the baseball stuff. Wanted to step in and clarify a couple things going on in this video. The rookie pitcher for the Tigers is not intentionally staring too long straight ahead to third base to indicate the pitch type to his Catcher. This is something he does unconsciously when throwing a fastball with a runner on base. In baseball, a pitcher with these unconscious physical "tells" (like poker) is said to be "tipping" his pitches. It is not very common for the hitting team to pick up on a reliable tell, but when they do a lot of runs can be scored.

When it comes to pitch tipping, it can be something that a team picks up during an individual game, or it can be something that they're told by advance scouts who watched that team or that player in the week(s) leading up to a series. Remember that in baseball, you play the same team 2-4 games in a row at one park, then usually a week or two later, you play them 2-4 games at the other team's park, so it's really worth preparing for a team with live scouts.
The practice of looking for pitch tipping is common not just for opposing pitchers but for your own. If you have a pitcher who is throwing well but he's getting hit hard, it's often assumed that he's tipping, so you'll try to figure out what the other team is seeing so you can coach him to correct his habit.
In this case the catcher clearly realizes his guy is tipping, but no one has figured out what they're keying on.

90% of the battle between batter and pitcher is mental. If you can get in your opponent's head, you're in a good spot. Speaking of which, you need to check out Nolan Ryan, one of the greatest pitchers to ever play the game. The man lived rent free in the heads of so many players. He's been retired for 30 years and still holds the record for no-hitters (pitching a game without allowing even a single hit) in a career with 7. So glad you're doing JomBoy; he does a great job.
By "normal shake", he means it's sincere; the pitcher is legitimately trying to tell the catcher to suggest another pitch. JomBoy felt that Rodriguez was being stiff and performative. Subjective, but I see his point.
Usually when a pitcher is tipping his pitches, it's more to do with his glove position or a change to his motion. But the head angle was pretty obvious.
And it wasn't that the runner can see the pitches from first base, it's that with a runner on first, the pitcher can't do a full windup (or the runner would have time to steal 2nd) and apparently Rodriguez had trouble getting into a rhythm with having to throw from the stretch position, and so he was locking in on the catcher if he had to throw a breaking ball, because he was worried about locating it properly. (Whereas you can basically just rear back and heave a fastball.)

As a pitcher you should always try and throw all your pitches with the exact same motion. Otherwise the other team will start to notice a pattern so when the pitcher does this he’s “tipping his pitches”. There are many different ways to tip pitches. I love the MLB these vids are great!

  • @eefeeman

4:18 It really is as simple as finding a pattern. When you’ve been pitching long enough to make it to the majors, you’ll develop your own routine and that can be hard to break. Even if it is something as small as, stop looking at third base.
There was one pitcher who tipped his pitches based on how high he brought his knee up. If it was about waist level, it was one type of pitch, but if he brought his knee up higher than his waist during his windup, it was a different type of pitch. It’s just picking up in subtleties to give your team an advantage

You guys should definitely react to the Astros sign-stealing scandal from 2017; Jomboy has a good video on this. Before then, the "dialogue" between the catcher and pitcher was done through the catcher giving hand signals and the pitcher shaking his head for yes/no. The catchers and pitchers would develop code systems: one finger for fastball, two for slider, etc. The catchers would also tap the side of their thigh to indicate whether the pitch would go on the inside or the outside.
In that scandal the Astros had someone in the outfield bleachers reading the signs and hitting garbage cans loudly to tip their batters about what pitch the other team was about to throw. They won the world series that year through this cheating. That scandal is the reason the catchers now use an electronic device to signal pitches instead of the traditional hand signs.

Did you guys pick up the difference in pitching motion? There's the "Windup" and the "Stretch." The windup is when the pitcher's knee comes up to his chest and his leg shoots out in front of him. This is how most pitchers work, most of the time. The stretch is used because it is harder for a base runner to steal a base with the shortened stretch motion. You'll notice his leg glide forward instead of raising and kicking. That's why he changed his delivery when a man got on base. This is important here because the pitcher has a poker like tell when he pitches from the stretch.

The pitcher/batter face off is what makes the game fun and chess like. The batter is trying to guess whats coming next and the pitcher/catcher is trying to throw sequences of pitches to throw off the batter. Something may look like a high fastball that was thrown before but dives away. The catcher also is orchestrating all sequences and tailers them to each batter. Every batter has strengths and weaknesses that the catcher needs to be aware of.

Much of the drama in baseball is found between the pitcher and the catcher. The catcher will flash a sign using his fingers; 1 finger is fastball, 2 fingers is curveball, 3 fingers is change-up...and if the pitcher wants to throw a different pitch than what the catcher is calling for, he will 'shake him off'..The hitters and baserunners are watching intently to see if the pitcher will tip off his pitches, as described here on this video. It's alot like a chess game once you figure out what the pitcher's tendencies are and how the opposing hitters are reacting to them..

Hey guys I very much appreciate your interest in baseball. You guys are doing GREAT. Too many find it slow but they fail to recognize the constant "dual" between the pitcher and hitter... the mental and physical components.
Another thing that maybe you've noticed but there are SO MANY NUMBERS and STATS used in describing players. Baseball is all about numbers. There is movie called "Moneyball" (with Brad Pitt) a true story, that exposes the value of stats.
PS: I grew up listening to baseball on radio...now there is a perfect match. All baseball fans can listen to a game and literally see with their mind's eye the action on the field. They know where everyone should be and who should be doing.

One quick explanation on "the stretch" - a pitcher typically has two ways to deliver the ball, "the windup," a full motion, and "the stretch." The stretch is an abbreviated motion used when there are runners on base, reducing the possibility of a stolen base by making the motion quicker (they are just "stretching" their foot towards the plate). There weren't any tells in this pitcher's standard motion, but his stretch delivery is where the other team (and Jomboy) figured out which pitch was coming next.

I'm glad you watched this video - it gives you some insight into the chess match between pitcher and hitter. Most of my friends get bored with the slow pace of baseball - but i came to appreciate the cerebral battle taking place on each pitch. In a previous post - i likened this dynamic to the one between kicker and goalie on penalty kicks & overtime shoot-outs in American soccer / European football. If you can guess correctly what you think your opponent is going to do - you have the advantage - so you are looking for clues that may reveal what your opponent intends to do. Remember - this video focused on this pitcher / hitter dynamic from the point of view of the hitters. But the pitcher is making similar calculations about the batter - what his strengths and vulnerabilities are. Anyways - i'm glad you're interested in doing more baseball - looking forward to your videos. Thanks for posting this one.

In the old days… the catcher would use his fingers to call the pitch. If the pitcher doesn’t like the call he will “shake him off”. Now they use electronic pitch call so the shakes are fake (at least the intense looks at the catcher is fake, because he’s getting the pitch through a headset). The other item he talked about was “tipping pitches”. Many younger pitchers tip their pitches. Perhaps by the way they hold their gloves or how they reach into the glove to grip the ball. It is very common for veteran players will watch their young ones to help them out. Much like a “tell” in poker.
So the game within the game is “can the opposing team figure out the tell before one of your veterans on your own team figures it out”.
One of the best in the game was the great defensive catcher, Yadier Molina. He and his teammate, pitcher Adam Wainwright, were famous for helping young pitchers figure out their tips or tells. There have been others as well, of course. There are videos about this as well as other aspects of the cerebral portion of the game of baseball. Jomboy is one of the best. He breaks down strategy as well as any. He also does videos where he reads the lips of players, coaches, and umpires during rows or arguments. They are hilarious. Cheers and keep up the good work. Your reactions are fun and genuine. Love it.

The problem is once the coach realizes that the pitcher is tipping. It can take up to two innings for a replacement pitcher to warm up. As it would be an unexpected scenario and they may not have had a pitcher warming up already.

So what hitters look for is a difference in body language in the different pitches. It came out that randy Johnson’s glove was wide for sliders and closed for fastballs (or the reverse). It helps a little to know roughly what you are or are not getting

  • @cygnusx-3217

The pitcher has a radio receiver clipped to his hat. He's receiving a verbal electronic message "fastball", "slider" or "curveball" (etc.) from the catcher, who pushes a button on a small electronic device attached to his leg gear. This was instituted just in the last two seasons. For 120 years prior, the catcher would use his fingers to call for pitches. This is much like the NFL where Quarterbacks have a radio receiver in their helmets to get the plays being called by coaches on the sidelines. Technology is changing sports.

This happens in other sports as well. Dan Fouts, former San Diego Chargers quarterback, would stand behind the center with one foot behind the other if he was dropping back to pass, and with his feet even when he was going to hand off. Eventually a team (I believe it was Denver) caught on, and made his day miserable (he eventually realized what he was doing and corrected it). Dennis Eckersley of the Oakland A's did a similar thing, it cost him once. .

The pitcher looking (or not looking) to third base isn't the pitcher signaling the catcher. It's just a bad habit the pitcher has that gives away the pitch. By the time he looks (or doesn't) the pitcher and catcher have already agreed on a pitch. Other times pitchers can "tip" their pitches by glove placement. Some will hold their glove by their belt for one pitch but then hold their glove by their chest for another.

  • @geneticrex

A pitcher can tip pitches in a variety of ways. It's dugout art to try to figure out IF a pitcher is tipping. Same thing with stealing signs. Some players are really good at stealing signs. This is why sign sequences are so elaborate.

9:40 They realized SOMETHING was wrong, which is why you saw all the fake headshakes and dancing around by the catcher. They definitely knew the yankees were onto them somehow.
The only problem is they had no idea that was what was giving it away. Teams do have personnel who's job it is to notice that kind of stuff, but actually figuring out what's giving it away is easier said than done.

The fun thing about pitch tipping is that a lot of newer baseball fans feel it’s unfair, or cheating, but those of us who obsess over baseball and know the history and nuance, we know this is a really cool part of the game. The sneaky strategy below the surface is so captivating! It’s fair game. This is why pitchers need to learn how to not tip their pitches, otherwise they’ll get eaten up.

Jomboy did a breakdown of an MLS playoff match. It went to penalties. One of the goalkeepers had been booked during the match.
During the penalties, he came off his line early, which is an automatic yellow. Goalkeeper is sent off. Reserve goalkeeper is about to come on... But wait... No substitutions once penalties have begun. A field player had to man up between the sticks.
If that had happened in Europe during a cup semifinal, cities would have burned to the ground. Jomboy's breakdown was very funny - and for a guy who doesn't really know proper football, pretty spot on.
    I recommend it wholeheartedly.

This is some extremely nuanced baseball shit. Jomboy is exceptional at breaking this stuff down. If the hitting team gets a runner on base, that runner will give some info to his team about the opposing pitchers tendencies that will help them predict pitches. The opposing pitcher in this case was a rookie and they picked up on his tip or "tells" quickly. This isn't typical per se but teams will definitely get any advantage they can and this is one way a team can expose an inexperienced pitcher. This kind of thing can also happen to experienced pitchers in high leverage games. I think Jomboy has a similar breakdown involving the pitcher Yu Darvish who tipped pitches in the playoffs.

For the 'pitchers shake', what jomboy is talking about is when a pitcher disagrees with a pitch, he'll shake the catcher off to throw a different pitch. But the reason jomboy says he doesn't have to do that anymore is that there is a new rule which allows teams to directly give signs to the pitchers ear using electronics instead of using the catchers fingers to signal a pitch. This prevents the batting team from stealing signs.

There was an NFL game many years ago when the Dallas Cowboys couldn't get anything going with their offence. It was like the other team knew what was coming. They didn't figure out until after the game that the fullback, Robert Newhouse, was tipping the plays. If it was a run, he put his mouth guard in; if it was a pass, he didn't. Cost them the game. Made me happy because who doesn't love to hate the Cowboys?

Love what you guys are doing here, I am a first time viewer, and a collegiate baseball player. One thing that you may have mixed up in the breakdown is that the pitcher is not intentionally trying to tell anyone what pitch is coming. The pitcher and catcher communicate via earpieces and the catcher is the one that tells the pitcher what to throw. The issue is that the pitcher has what in poker you would call a “tell” meaning he is subconsciously giving up what pitch he is throwing. Hope this helps and good luck on the journey.

If you guys didn’t get it, the pitcher had a Tell that gives away his pitch and the batters have caught on, now if the pitcher manager or catcher doesn’t realize they know the tell or even worse & most likely, they don’t realize themselves he has a tell at all to correct. That’s why they were doing all that head shaking and moving around, they know something’s wrong but don’t know what needs to be fixed so tried fooling the batter with the wrong deception tactic and didn’t hide the real one. Basically “baseball chess”
