Laura
I have always made a DO NOT NEED list before I go grocery shopping. It keeps me from overspending on things I already have.
That is brilliant!
Love the ideas how to declutter toiletries. In non-COVID times, I’d Organise Clothes Swap Parties within the larger circle of friends and yes, opened, but unloved toiletries, cosmetics, makeup palettes, ... could be brought as well. We’d even offer some wipe down alcohol for these, so people could try them out.
I found some amazing things that way, which I would have never picked in the stores. What no one wanted, got donated to a women’s shelter or to a refugee organization helping out female migrants.
I am a new subscriber. During this pandemic I have cancelled subscription boxes. This pas week I went through my makeup and skincare and purged it done. I also got rid of some jewelry. My goal is to stop shopping for makeup and skincare and use what I own.
Just about to tackle the cosmetics drawer. I went through my earrings. Even getting rid of 3 pairs helps me get rid of a container in my drawer
BUT I got my hubby involved. He is a former radio engineer. I asked him if I should keep some blank cassette tapes.
One thing led to another. First, he wired up the cassette tape part of our 1980s stereo system so I can hear some tapes we put together. Probably toss after.
Then I asked him if we could go through the big storage box of computer wires and connectors. Whittled that down to half! Some of the connection ports don’t exist.
Then I asked about the landline phones in the garage and phone cords. Well those went out. He took all those to the garbage bin.
I asked him what he thought of the process, and he said “great!” He has seen a growing bunch of bags grow in the kitchen. Pickup date isn’t available for 3 weeks, so we see progress. It’s fun to get him and involved. .
Wonderful! Sounds like you're making excellent progress, Judy. 😀
All my "rethink" products, free with purchase stuff, samples, non-returnables, & "I don't want to take a bus ride to return it" cosmetics go into a box, & once or twice a year I take the box to a family gathering & give it to my nieces. They like getting free cosmetics, & I get to be "the cool aunt".
If it is soap or shampoo, it is perfect for cleaning toilets.
Or sinks and counters.
Leftover Conditioner can be used to shave, also.
I haven't bought body wash for about two years now and I still have 1.5 bottles left. 😬 After this, I'm going straight to bar soap!!
I have several boxes with things I need to use up...... the problem is I take forever to use up things like shampoo or shower gel.
I started to use my shower gel as liquid soap too. Now it doesn't take so long anymore. I bought many shower gels because they were "limited edition" and smelled nice...
I only need to wash my hair once or twice a week (couldn't pull of complete no poo though - I tried during the lockdown!)
The pandemic has the positive side effect that I spend less time browsing drugstores for new limited editions XD.
I like it that my hand soap (aka shower gel) now always smells nice ;)
This year, one of my focuses has been to use up the various hair products I have been hoard.... er collecting. 😂 (I'm working on reforming my product junkie ways LOL!) One thing I've learned is that a bottle of shampoo takes me about a year to use-even using it as body wash as well. I currently have 3 different ones in rotation, and I still find myself thinking Oh I need this or that hair product 🤦♀️ BUT it has been a great experience just to see how long it really takes to use things up. OH! On that theme, I took to writing the date I opened a container/product and it's really helped me see how fast (or, more likely) how slow I used things up.It's been helpful to remind myself that I don't need 3 large bottles of face cleanser since one lasts me 6-9 months.
Howdy Laura! Thanks for your helpful videos!
Thanks for watching them!
You can use up old shampoo, bubble bath, shower gel etc that are lingering around as hand wash. At the moment we’re all washing our hands so often it will soon get used up.
This is why I love my ikea vanity - the drawers are deep enough that you can stand products on end, instead of laying them on their side.
Wow! Great idea! I’ve been complaining about my dressing table drawers being so deep! I wonder if my jewelry organizer would work that way.
been doing the challenge love it
thanks
YAY! Thanks so much, Nancy. :D
Confused me for a moment. I was wondering what a seasonal ipad was, slaps head. Seasonal EYE pad lol :)
Yes! Have finally sorted and got rid of my rarely used cosmetic products. Thank you!
I get a metric crapton of cosmetics (all natural, too... so shorter shelf life) and food supplements as free samples through my work and I feel like I’m forever decluttering them. My goal now is to move them on out of here as fast as I can, before they expire. Plan to leave some body and hair care products in the communal sauna in my building tomorrow. I need to really do some maths with the facial care stuff, I have a creeping feeling it’ll take washing my face 4+ times a day to burn through it all.
Good idea to use marker for exp dates. And going to try the 'do not need' list - genius!
Thank you so much for all the love an help! Can you make a video on how you organize (and declutter) digital "paper"? (e.g. photos, scanned documents)
I have gotten into the habit of putting date opened on items (more for food) in case I open another item not realizing I had one open...
Awesome one!
Thanks so much!
THIS! Is the area i'm struggling the most with right now! .. and it affects my grooming since everything is so disorganized .. it drives me crazy!
I keep two permanent boxes in my room, one is marked USE IT OR LOSE IT where i put shampoo i don't like or a makeup bag i love but have never found a use for etc. . .since we can't donate liquids to places like thrift stores, whenever i'm ready to rid the box i discreetly leave it in laundramats where lower income people have to do their laundry and can really use the free products. The other box is marked REFILLS which holds my excess stuff, like if something is on sale so i buy two of them i put one in the bathroom & the other one into this box, also i don't like big size bottles taking up space in the bathroom so i fill 3 oz bottles with the product (shampoo conditioner, lotions ets) to keep in the bathroom and put the remainder in the box.
The daily/weekly stuff that doesn't go into these two boxes is where i struggle to organize 😕
Question .. what were you writing down in the video?
I think Laura was mainly writing down expiry dates in the video.
Thank you. =)
I really need to do this one!!! I have a huge collection of different body butters and lotions that are unopened from gift sets 😩
Set a 5 minute timer and away you go. =)
Did another sweep of toiletries, make up and medications last night. Meds are in my kitchen , Prescription and OTC. I was shocked to have so much expired! We had to get a current Epi pen that had expired in 2018 today! I only have a small makeup bag with less than ten items.
I just use something up because you generally can't pass it on to someone unless they are family and learn from the experience
I’ve been bingeing on your videos---preparation for No Buy in 2021- I’m DETERMINED to do this. I’m the world’s guiltiest when it comes to back ups--why do I think I’ll never be able to get to the store again????😄🙄🙄🙄
You can do it! Make a plan and follow through. =)
Not buying in bulk when something goes on sale...
I've always subscribed to that, but have started seriously thinking about maybe beginning to do that recently due to the fact that the things I like tend to become discontinued.
...my favorite shampoo is no longer made (& those selling off their stash are selling it at 4x the cost), my favorite jeans are no longer sold (luckily, for now, I can occasionally find them in poshmark), my favorite shorts are no longer sold (I'm super bummed I didn't go ahead & buy the next size or two smaller at summer's end because now all shorts are too big & I can't find any on the market I like. Haha), my favorite dish soap stopped being made, etc.
I often have that problem too. If you know something you love is going to be discontinued, by all means stock up. But remember that you'll run out eventually so a new favourite will have to be found eventually.
@@HowToGYST oh, definitely!
I'm just a deep rooted creature of habit (I know I'm not the only one) that gets stressed from change, and it seems to take a long time to find a new replacement (doesn't help that I have a hard time spending any money on something if there's any doubt if I'll like it).
Needless to say, I drive my spouse a little mad. 😂
My house drives me mad and its not me its the ppl in it. Ive always been 1 to use what i have and have to finidh it before i buy more. My partner and daughter will open new things because they are there...... drived me mad but i will not buy more untill what i have has been used
My only problem is why didn't I know this 40 year years ago ?
Better late than never. ;)
