What I learnt from living in South America is that when the streets are empty, that's when they're at their most dangerous. If the streets are full, you're good, they won't try anything in front of loads of people cos they end up getting shot by members of the public.
In Medellin we call that place el centro, or el hueco. El hueco is close to the biggest drug market in the city so at night when all of the businesses close and everyone goes home there's alot of addicts, and thieves lurking around the lonely dark streets. In the daytime its pretty safe, except for pickpockets, its a very commercial area during the day with many stores where u can buy nearly anything u can think of for a cheap price.
I go there during the day and feel pretty comfortable just chilling on the street and drinking a beer. Once sunset hits though you notice a rush of people start leaving the area and it can even be hard to get a taxi around that time. It gets pretty rough once it is dark outside. I was chillin there one day with my girlfriend buying some stuff and around 6 pm no uber would accept us and we were stuck trying to hunt down a taxi to get out of there. Lot of sketchy looking people and addicts smoking basuco lurking around.
I went there. To be honest it's much like a lot of Latin America in that it's a lot of frontin'. Colombia.. 90% of people are friendly lovely and welcoming. Then you've got 1 or 2% of people who are genuine gangsters and drugs barons but those people don't want the attention and won't bother the general public. Problem is that 8% or so who are lovers simply want to latch onto the reputation of the gangsters and so they try and intimidate people etc but truth is if you get aggressive with them, unlike the genuine gangsters, these people will back down
In Medellin now. Mostly a safe place. I haven't had any dramas here. Walked some dodgy places late at night off chops. My missus is Colombian. It's an amazing place. We are back to Perth in 2 weeks.
I travelled alone thru Venezuela and Columbia when I was a skinny dreadlocked 28year old. I went out at night partying till the sun came up had a great time.I was always relaxed and spoke decent Spanish, dressed a bit scruffy, never wore jewelry or a watch. It's all about how you act and look !!!

It's hard to explain mate I can only speak for Brazil there are bad parts you see on RUclips then there are no go zones my partner is Brazilian and her brother is a cop and I went with him into a pretty bad area in one of the worst city's in the country Latin America is about common sense for the most part and if your not stupid it can be a amazing holiday
it's definitely not. Tourists get robbed, drugged and killed basically weekly in Medellin. I wouldn't go back to any big city there including Cali and Cartagena. Countryside and small colonnial towns are beautiful.

I would say Medillin is one of the safest these days Cartagena being the safest. It's drastically changed in Medellin over the past 5 years with the police and military presence during the day. @@tobias193

I'm no expert on Colombia or Medellin, however, I spent one month traveling all around Colombia in August and never had any issues to speak of. I partied until late and walked around Medellin by myself at 2am and never felt unsafe. I used Uber and always listened to locals for advice when going into the dodgy parts of town
I go to Colombia 3 weeks at a time and never had any trouble walking around day or night.. People show love. Its no difference of being any where else in the world. If you flashy and someone see a lick they will try you.🙏
One of the safest cities in Colombia 💁🏽♂️. I’ve been to barrio Santo Domingo Medellín, & was told it’s one of the most dangerous barrios/favelas in Medellin, and we had no trouble at all. But it’s Medellin Colombia, so you never know when you’re walking past a cartel member haha. Make sure to visit Pablo Escobar barrio, And also Communa 13 👌🏽

But did you see the tracksuit gangsters all dressed the same who provide "security " for the restaurants there, they were dressed same , black tracksuit, 2 red stripes, balaclaver and all holding shotguns. My friend asked what was good here and he happily told us. Was kinda strange talking to a local gang member dressed like he about to rob a bank giving us advice on which restaurant was best. There was another area called the bronx, city block's walled off with people with guns at entrances. I stayed for a month and seen some ither crazy things as well. Cant wait to go back, so cheap, great food, people really friendly, like so nice for the most part. If your walking around and people see your a tourist they will say dont go down that street or dont keep going that way, bad people down there etc. Im already looking at buying property and moving there. So cheap, i work online.
Anything North of Medellin is where you stay away from and stay away from clubs that the party buses take you too. I would 100% not recommend and heard plenty of stories of people getting robbed. Even during the day you could get robbed. Some places are low in crime rates but places more towards the north are where it starts getting sketchy.

Medellin is the mellowest city in Columbia. The people there are actually very friendly, the other cities down south are a different story though.
