The airzoo in Kalamazoo is restoring a Dauntless and a Grumman Wildcat to be displayed at the Navy Pier in Chicago. The airzoo has a Dauntless that was in the November 1942 invasion of North Africa, restored to Museum quality on display. It went in the lake in 1943 and was recovered in 1993 and required 8 years of restoration, much of it done by volunteers.
I live in Michigan and recently went to the air museum (Air Zoo) in Kalamazoo. They were working on a dauntless recovered from Lake Michigan and mentioned that the plane was intended for display in Chicago. Does anyone know what happened to the aircraft they found in this clip? Could it be the one now being restored?

My uncle trained on flying b17 and b29 bombers in lake michigan and later in miami south beach. I remember he said there were frequent crashes and mishaps, as all the pilots were newbies. 😆😆🇺🇸🇺🇸
I think you mean a Boeing 727. This crash happened on August 10, 1965.. It was a United flight from New York to Chicago. Never determined why the pilots ditched it in the lake. Everyone on board was killed.
There’re more than a few of those WW2 aircraft which have been not only raised from the lake bottom, but rebuilt to flying condition. One is a Grumman F3F Wildcat, I believe. It is being flown in air shows all around the USA. All it takes to make these sunken planes fly again is a few million bucks and a lot of determined people working together.
It's a bit of a stretch to call that a plane! A wrecked portion of fuselage without anything forward of the firewall and missing wings and tail does not an aircraft make. Most importantly, no casualties incurred during the crash.
This outdated aircraft, for WW2, could not get anywhere near 400mph. In that they were training for carrier take offs and landings its speed would have been quite slow.
Slow but deadly dauntless. Sbd. I built a giant scale 100cc gas rc model of one and it has tge same flight characteristic and is slower than other monoplane warbirds i have but flies great
How do you get an aircraft carrier into lake Michigan? I didn't think that the canals could support anything that large. ...Ahh, nevermind. Just looked it up. One ship, the USS Sable, originally built as a passenger ship, was purchased by the government and converted to have a airstrip deck solely for the purpose of training pilots. It was built by Amship in Lorain Ohio right near where I grew up. They still had to navigate from lake Erie all the way to lake Michigan.
Both the USS Wolverine and the USS Sable were converted side wheel lake steamers. The route from Lake Erie to Lake Michigan may be long, but freighters do it all the time.
twinsmm1 thanks man, that's great, but can you provide any further details? Like, what the ship was called, what it was originally built as, who purchased it, what kind of conversion it had, the sole purpose of the conversion, the company that built it, where the shipyard was based, whether it was anywhere near your birthplace, and whether they still had to navigate from Lake Erie all the way to Lake Michigan? If you can provide any of that information it would be great. Thank you!

imagine what they could find in the restricted waters on Lake Michigan! Military restricted for practice runs.

Probably the only CNN video I’ve ever liked. Good work CNN
For once, not fake news.
@@daddyrabbit835 Yeah, you only swallow the fake "news" put out by your cult.
That is a nice boat.
There's a DC10 out there, too - happened in the 1960s, I think.
A DC-4 went missing over Lake Michigan, if that's what you're talking about. Known as Northwest Orient Airlines Flight 2501, but they never found it
The DC-10 did not fly until the early seventies.

@@robertwalker3087 the consensus was that the pilots misread their new style altimeters. Alec Ibay has a great video on YT about United 389.
They should bring up the German submarine uc 97
So that's where Malaysian Airlines Flight MH370 ended up.
***** I guess the joke wasn't obvious enough.
***** It's actually a Mclaren F1.
Look bish
Not true!
@@Icaller1915 its a fucking joke
Zibra mussels love alumnum !
I wonder why CNN didn’t include the race of these people in the title. I thought that was their shtick...
OMG
Might be some well preserved machine guns laying around down there.
0:27 - 28 something in the water just to the left of the antenna, then gone underwater.
Nessie?
There's nothing left to put on display!
Can’t believe how clear the water is! I thought lakes had poor visibility.
Rangers lead the way
I'd enjoy watching this if it wasn't CNN.
@Ronald: What are you doing watching videos? Don't you have one of your cult meetings to attend?

Wouldn't it crumble to pieces while being raised?? Its been sitting there for decades I highly doubt it's in any shape to be raised.
they have raised quite a few ww2 plane wrecks from the lake.
The wrecks deteriorate far slower in the cold, dark fresh water of the Great Lakes than a wreck in the ocean.

Flight is in very small parts. Hitting the water at 400mph the plane and the body's were chopped up like being in a grinder

They were very tiny compared to a real aircraft carrier. Even much smaller than a CVE, Escort Carrier.
But you are correct that most aircraft carriers even in WWII were beyond seaway max size. Some small escort carriers might have fit though
Hey it’s 2020 now did anyone lift it up yet?
Yes they did among others
So, more then 2 years later, did they lift it up?
No clue...
Poor Duantlass, those planes are one of my favourite Aircraft.
,the USS Lexington is sitting in 10k of water with aircraft scattered on the flight deck
In chicago? Why not Michigan?
Why is it going to chicago and not a place in Michigan
Because Illinois is also on Lake Michigan, and the Navy base these came from was also in Illinois
First
what you call me bish?
So you wanna search the great lakes and dig up every single training plane that ditched or crashed out there jeez, not worth it.
Why not? Those planes will fetch a pretty penny on the market today

those planes sucked
Actually, one of the best aircraft built during the war. Sank 3 Japanese carriers at Midway in 5 minutes.
