I’ll never agree to a 8 episode season. The boys writing was just that good in its earlier seasons and we have HOTD S2 as proof 8 episodes can be mishandled
Your premise died when you said that source material is what defines success. Meanwhile the boys went away from the source material and made it better.
I love The Boys more than The Umbrella Academy. Similar to The Boondocks, the first three seasons of The Umbrella Academy were very good while the fourth and final season was a big disappointment. In my opinion, the final season of The Umbrella Academy is actually worse than Game of Thrones season 8. Game of Thrones season 8 for me was not as bad as everybody say it was. Now I consider The Umbrella Academy is in the same level as Dexter and Lost where they start off good but later ended in a huge let down. At least The Boys had a spinoff called Gen V and Game of Thrones of course has a prequel called House of the Dragon. Those are something that both Umbrella Academy and Hannibal tv series never had. I guarantee The Boys will have a Breaking Bad ending. I also love Stranger Things more than Umbrella Academy. In fact, I hope Stranger Things will have a much better ending than Umbrella Academy and this time end in a good note.
GoT is definitely the worst ending of all time if only for the fact it reached such heights at its peak that it hurt that much x more when it went to shit. I agree Dexter season 8 was awful from start to finish but GoT is worse.
S1 umbrella academy was peak Same with the boys I liked both, when they came out. But I'm ngl, the new season sucks. Kinda weird tho Their forth season are their worst. Lmao
Last seasons suck now! Game of thrones, house of the dragon, umbrella academy, the boys. Wtf is going on almost sucks as bad as the new snow white movie trailer
To be fair, I didn’t even know The Umbrella Academy had even released the final season until September, whereas The Boys had always been obnoxious about their advertising.
If we are going strictly on seasons one- three for umbrella academy, I would prefer it to the boys, but if we factor in season four, the boys is the more consistent show
The actors of UA are good, but The Boys casting is bloody brilliant. Karl Urban and Anthony Starr are irreplaceable the other characters are great too. Storywise, not counting S4 of Umbrella, both were good shows.
It's not like they were ever equal. Umbrella Academy the comic was a snarky derivative compost heap of every cliche popular at the time in comics. The Boys was a spot on satire. Turning Umbrella Academy into a warm, funny, character driven show for two seasons was an accomplishment that ended up being their undoing. Like Game of Thrones the plot just became a device for getting to the hugs and tears from the moment the kid from Dallas came back to give Elliot Page some drama to do. The Boys was a great comic and could have been a fine series if it was done faithfully. As it is, they changed a lot, but kept the two core elements; satire, and over the top humor. It's not clearly better than the comic but it's hilarious and dark in the same way. Umbrella Academy didn't have that luxury, they needed to create something better than the comic. They really should have brought in a veteran comics or sci fi writer to keep them plot driven. Satire is hard, melodrama is the lowest common denominator, for all it's juvenile humor The Boys ultimately aimed higher.
Umbrella Academy Season 4 was very flawed And The Boys relies heavily on gross out scenes for shock humor and political targeting humor I love both shows even though they have flaws to their writing
It felt like most of the characters in the final season of UA didn't have much to do. Also the Lyla/5 stuff was unwittingly creepy. He still looks like very young man, maybe 18? and Lyla is a grown arse women in her 30s.
For me the big reason is the streaming provider. Amazon seems to trust the creatives a lot more and ACTUALLY tries giving the viewers more of what they like. Netflix on the other hand to me just, sees a slight dip in viewership and without explanation, tries to straight up end it and create another show. Like for Umbrella Academy, I believe the weaknesses of season 3 are almost entirely at the fault of covid anyway, but netflix released it at practically the same time as strange things season 4 (their biggest show) and then basically cancel it weeks after saying next season will be its last. For me I just trust any amazon project im about to watch more than netflix. Umbrella academy was such a golden opportunity to have a 2nd IP of stranger things level and they threw it away.
Yes, The Umbrella Academy is based on the graphic novels. However, if you read them you'll see that the show is very different from the source material from the very beginning. I'd argue that the show is inspired by the graphic novels as opposed to being based on them.
To be honest the only similarity of both shows is that they are both "Watchmen-like" in a sense of Who watches the Watchmen? In a sense of... They are super heroes but they are assholes. However the Umbrella Academy has more human more endearing characters while The Boys are just full blown psychopaths. However everything else is very different. Different settings, different narratives... Different vibes altogether. The only real similarity is that they are both "Watchmen-like". And yes the lack of source material really did hurt the Umbrella Academy.
Both fell off the cliff but the Boys is hanging on by like 3 fingers gor me. My interest is still barely there for Solider Boy and how they are finally gonna end Homelander. I know everyone loves Anthony Starr as the character but im getting tired of his thing and just want them to take him out
It's wild too cause at least imo, Umbrella Academy has a much better source material than The Boys does (outside of Butcher being a character so clearly ripe for adaption that they didn't really need to change him much at all) I wish Gerard Way would release the next Umbrella Academy book, it's been so long.
Both series has dangling plot threads that always got me. In the Umbrella Academy, other than the Umbrella/Sparrow Academy there were other children who were given powers, except their moms never left them come to the Academy. We never find out what happened to those children. For all we knew they could have grown up and gotten their own powers and become villains. In The Boys, babies were given Compound V to become supes. Yet we never see any supervillains who present theirselves publicly as such (just "superheroes" who are dicks). That could have fleshed out the Seven more and provide more of a reasoning that they are publicly held in high regard. I think both would have fleshed out their universes better. This is why I think Invincible is probably the best out of the three. Jupiter's Legacy also had some potential, but by the time that came out, we already felt saturation with the three shows already out there.
I loved the first two seasons of the umbrella academy!!! Its was peeeerfect!!! Loved it way more than Boys. Not one character in Boys (the cast is great for sure) I root for, all are pretty much hypocrites and all are used and use others. In Umbrella’s the characters r flawed but reliable and hopeful and deep. But s3 and 4…. Have no idea wth happened there with the writers 🤷🏻♀️
3:35 I'm sorry, but is your brain on autopilot? That's solely a cost cutting measure that has been to the detriment of basically every show that switched from a 10 episode structure to a 8.
The umbrella academy world feels really unreal like nothing is occurring outside of the main characters lives and I’ll be honest everything with them is really nonsensical and uninteresting, I enjoyed klaus’ redemption arc in season 2 I think it was but then they threw all of that away
Love both and i can appreciate Umbrella Academys ending not the best but i feel it fit the show the Boys however and regardless of what people are saying is only getting better and fking better
While the Boys Season 4 is arguably the weakest season among the 4, it is an excellent set up season. I also argue that the entertainment quality hasn't dropped at all. Depending on how season 5 is done, it could be the best season
It is all about the streaming services. The Boys is HUGE for Amazon, they already spun it off and it is a tentpole show for them. The Umbrella Academy was never that for Netflix. It ended up being a niche show. Netflix rarely greenlights anything more than three seasons and everyone kind of figured TUA was cancelled after season 3. The last season really felt rushed and mishandled like everyone was cashing an unexpected check and they were all out the door. You also give The Boys too much credit. A LOT of people did not like the last season.
I've watched Umbrealla Academy show in 2019. I don't remember anything about its plot. I feel only disappointment. This video has also reminded the the show's name, again i only remembered emptiness at the end of the season 1.
the reason The Boys outlasted TUA and the reason TUA fell of, the lack of a villain AND the reason for the lack of pacing are all the same. Netflix. Maybe Steve Blackman, idk. Whoever decided that it was going to end with 4 seasons and have a shortened final season. It was clearly intended to go 6-7 seasons, 60-70 episodes. Yeah the writers got extremely lazy at the end, but we knew from the minute they said 6 more episodes that it couldn't be done. It got just over half the episodes it needed on the low end. If it had been on Amazon, they probably would have given it more time, because they need more big name shows.
This video irked me enough that I've chosen to write this comment. Point 1: The Difference in Source Material The Boys has strayed very far from its source material, just look at Soldier Boy. The way you portrayed the Boys loyalty to the source material is just disingenuous. And the reason the new season was garbage was because of the short runtime among other factors. Simply blaming 'solely' it on "the writers can't think of anything themselves" is a very limited evaluation. You mention that the boys has an ending they can work of off, so the show has a natural direction, in contrast to the Umbrella Academy has a few issues. The Boys does have an ending, but it's unanimously hated. And the writers clearly gave up on following up on it in season 3. You would know if you actually researched the comic ending (I'll give you a hint: Black Noir). Umbrella Academy was originally intended to run for 6-8 seasons, so whatever they had planned was clearly cut short. Point 2: Pacing The Boys S4 has objectively terrible pacing. This both these series share in their new seasons. In the Boys, the story almost doesn't have any significant changes until the last episode, in which the pacing starts speeding and being rushed. I feel like this video is just a reason for the creator to use Umbrella Academy's failure just so he can glaze The Boys. You're letting your own opinion get in the way of critical thinking. You saying the Boys has never felt empty is contrary to the popular opinion throughout most of its airing, as people felt that most of the season was uneventful, and relied on shock value. It's funny that you mention that the characters trauma is inconsistent in Umbrella Academy, because it is mentioned literally every season. In every season at least one of the characters has some sort of arc where they wrestle with the hold Hargreeves had on them (S1: Luther, S2: Diego, S3: Klaus, S4: Viktor). Point 3: Not **every** show has to be a universe. Point 4: To judge the quality of a show by statistics is just stupid. The best movies may never get watched by more than a hundred people. That's just how the world works. This is the same type of logic that Rotten Tomatoes users use when they decide on whether they watch a movie based of a score. In conclusion, this video is ass.
I respect ur opinion. But u are just a hater. You know I could give some debatable arguments. Point 1. Not very far. But you mean improved upon. Not just to soldier boy but to the other characters as well. At least they wore superhero suits in the series. Unlike ur umbrella academy lol. Point 2. Pacing. Sure the first few episodes had terrible pacing, I can agree with u on this but they made a comeback in the mid to finale. Point 3. Basic. The boys is it's own universe. So what are you on. There will be upcoming projects as well. Point 4. The boys have a better rating and will leave a legacy. These are upcoming boys project: The boys season 5 Gen V season 2 The boys mexico Vought rising. In conclusion, the boys is better overall. Umbrella academy is long dead from the beginning. No wonder I didn't watch the show. Although I'm planning to read the umbrella academy comic books instead rather than this softie of a show
I get comparing the two but they are so different in the source material the boys is a Garth Ennis balls to the wall out doing even Garth Ennis in profanity and grossness and a little bit of sweetness. Umbrella academy is the My Chemical Romance lead singers rip off of doom patrol when his own take on doom patrol was better then the the umbrella academy comic. The better comparison is umbrella Academy and doom parol tv show.
I would put Doom Patrol in the same category. Sadly no one watched it because hating dc is what's popular but it's (in my opinion) the better show out of the 3
To be fair, season 4 of The Boys isn't that great of a season. But it's not bad television either. And season 5 will probably end in a great manner. The Umbrella Academy is a great show but so repetitive in it's formula and didn't stick the landing with how it should have ended. Also, it just seems like Netldix doesn't care about it that much.
I was just thinking about why they both had bad seasons. One was very obviously worse, but the other wasn’t anywhere Scot-free, lol. 😭 Why are all the current shows that used to be good deteriorating?
watched the season finale on "man of recaps" channel, it took only 8 minutes to recap it, that's really really bad. I won't be surprised if they add another Ellen Page ranting and preachings about her life being hard since becoming a dude.
I agree. I love The Boys more than The Umbrella Academy because The Boys is much more mature, had a good story, great characters, deeper meaning, character development, chemistry, and I like the idea of they may look like superheroes on the outside but inside they’re psychopaths.
One is a Sci-fi fantasy show and the other is a satirical superhero show. Makes no sense to compare them. Only thing in common is the source material are both comicbooks

Also, The Boys have a lot of complex characters like Homelander, Butcher, Hughie and those 3 are the central characters of The Boys. I don't think any of Umbrella Academy have the same complex level such as those 3.
@@margarethmichelina5146 I would say Vanya/Viktor because that character has been traumatised as a child like Homelander was. That's why season 1 and 2 were so good.
Everyone on the Umbrella Academy were getting too old (for continuity purposes) waiting for the next season to begin production.
I’ll never agree to a 8 episode season. The boys writing was just that good in its earlier seasons and we have HOTD S2 as proof 8 episodes can be mishandled
Do you think the writers talked to Gerard about his outlines for what's next for the comic series?
I thought the sams about GOT s8. Until i read the books
GoT is definitely the worst ending of all time if only for the fact it reached such heights at its peak that it hurt that much x more when it went to shit. I agree Dexter season 8 was awful from start to finish but GoT is worse.
@@caseyhart4999Actually, Lost is the worst out of all the disappointing finales
Elliot Page was the first major misstep. Never fit the character and the transition was distracting.
Agreed, the second i seen the transition put into the show, i knew vanya's character arc would be derailed.
S1 umbrella academy was peak
Same with the boys
I liked both, when they came out.
But I'm ngl, the new season sucks.
Kinda weird tho
Their forth season are their worst. Lmao
Last seasons suck now! Game of thrones, house of the dragon, umbrella academy, the boys. Wtf is going on almost sucks as bad as the new snow white movie trailer
@@killianmcnamee7062the boys season 5 is the last season
Imo S2 was the best for UA. I really got invested.
Umbrella Academy has more whimsy and feel good moments. The Boys has a lot more OMG and WTF moments. I like both shows.
Both had a phenomenal first season. Only one kept the hype after that.
Answer: Netflix's reliance on AI script writing.
ONG without Homelander The boys would be average
He's the main character so that's kinda stating the obvious...
@@GSG02590Hughie and Butcher are the main characters
@@andrecromer4224 The whole story is built around Homelander, Hughie and Butcher are the antagonists.
It outlived TUA because Antony Starr is a god level Homelander
Umbrella Academy Season 4 was very flawed
And The Boys relies heavily on gross out scenes for shock humor and political targeting humor
I love both shows even though they have flaws to their writing
They are both flawed but the viys has an advantage. And it pain me to admit this, The boys is better written to an extent. Well the bar is low
2019 is forever a mark of the whole world of what was
I really thought the umbrella accademy was cancelled after season 3. So i guess getting a final season was a nice surprise? Now idk😅
It felt like most of the characters in the final season of UA didn't have much to do. Also the Lyla/5 stuff was unwittingly creepy. He still looks like very young man, maybe 18? and Lyla is a grown arse women in her 30s.
And didn't Five kill her parents in the first time line?
The same thing happened with Vikings Valhalla. The Last season was so rushed
Yeah Vikings Valhalla felt like it needed several more seasons!
this is why TUA season 1 will remain my favorite of the seasons
Yeah season 1 and 2 were top tier!
I don’t think the source material has anything to do with it
Sometimes it has. Not just tv series. Also in live action movies. If strayed away too much
Yes, The Umbrella Academy is based on the graphic novels.
No strong antagonist in the UA like in the boys
Because the boys is better it’s just better it’s just objectively better
I loved the first two seasons of the umbrella academy!!! Its was peeeerfect!!! Loved it way more than Boys. Not one character in Boys (the cast is great for sure) I root for, all are pretty much hypocrites and all are used and use others. In Umbrella’s the characters r flawed but reliable and hopeful and deep. But s3 and 4…. Have no idea wth happened there with the writers 🤷🏻♀️
The only thing I liked about The Umbrella Academy was season 1 after that it mostly went down hill from there (plus season 2 felt like a repeat of 1)
3:35 I'm sorry, but is your brain on autopilot? That's solely a cost cutting measure that has been to the detriment of basically every show that switched from a 10 episode structure to a 8.
The umbrella academy world feels really unreal like nothing is occurring outside of the main characters lives and I’ll be honest everything with them is really nonsensical and uninteresting, I enjoyed klaus’ redemption arc in season 2 I think it was but then they threw all of that away
Love both and i can appreciate Umbrella Academys ending not the best but i feel it fit the show the Boys however and regardless of what people are saying is only getting better and fking better
Because Antony Starr.
Comparing these two shows is crazy the only similarity being off kilter superhero’s everything else is completely different
Yeah no, this Umbrella academy show cannot be compared to The Boys at all.
Why did Vanya become Victor why not recast?
I was and am not super hero fatigued
I’ve never herd anyone say that
I woke fatigued that shit was old the day it started
I've watched Umbrealla Academy show in 2019. I don't remember anything about its plot. I feel only disappointment. This video has also reminded the the show's name, again i only remembered emptiness at the end of the season 1.
Let’s not compare my two favorite shows 🌚
the reason The Boys outlasted TUA and the reason TUA fell of, the lack of a villain AND the reason for the lack of pacing are all the same.
Point 1: The Difference in Source Material
The Boys has strayed very far from its source material, just look at Soldier Boy.
Point 2: Pacing
The Boys S4 has objectively terrible pacing.
Point 3:
Not **every** show has to be a universe.
Point 4:
To judge the quality of a show by statistics is just stupid.
These are upcoming boys project:
The boys season 5
Gen V season 2
The boys mexico
Vought rising.
In conclusion, the boys is better overall. Umbrella academy is long dead from the beginning. No wonder I didn't watch the show. Although I'm planning to read the umbrella academy comic books instead rather than this softie of a show
You need a hug
A warm hug
I get comparing the two but they are so different in the source material the boys is a Garth Ennis balls to the wall out doing even Garth Ennis in profanity and grossness and a little bit of sweetness. Umbrella academy is the My Chemical Romance lead singers rip off of doom patrol when his own take on doom patrol was better then the the umbrella academy comic. The better comparison is umbrella Academy and doom parol tv show.
The Boys Season 4 > The Umbrella Academy Season 4.
Yeah definitely!
I would put Doom Patrol in the same category. Sadly no one watched it because hating dc is what's popular but it's (in my opinion) the better show out of the 3
Yeah that's fair enough!
actually the umbrella academy is more similar to doom patrol, same atmosphere.
Yes and it should've. But instead we got this. No wonder it failed from the beginning
Not that this is anything relayed to this video but sweet home is my favorite show on Netflix, then it's the last kingdom
The boys has a more interesting concept
The Umbrella Academy doesn't even come close to the boys
@@GSG02590a sci Fi fantasy show which has lots of benchmark ideas to get from but still failed. Unlike the boys a more mature show and which very few people heard of.
The fourth season of The Boys and The Umbrella Academy are not even close to starting to compare, the fourth of The Boys is superior in absolutely everything, acting, special effects, soundtrack, sound mixing, green screen, practical effects, development , deepening, scenarios, world creation, The Umbrella Academy has long passed its glory days, these two series are no longer comparable nowadays

What exactly is bad about the boys season 4? Seems like you are disappointed there wasn't any goofy fight scenes between Homelander and Butcher.
