  • On January 21st, eight members of SAS squadron Bravo Two Zero under the command of Sergeant Andy McNab are airlifted to northwestern Iraq. “The whole regiments effort was focused on stopping the scuds firing into Israel,” according to McNab. “The problem was there was no information; very little mapping and no satellite imagery of the area.” That lack of information would prove to be Bravo Two Zero’s undoing.

Now you know why it's so important to ruck march. In FTX at the end of infantry school we walked about 180 miles in 7 days and this shows why that was so important.

It is sad how the British believed the lies by Cheney and Rumsfeld and backed us invading another third-world country to steal its resources by milking sympathy for 9/11 instead of hunting down Bin Laden. That wasn't until another 3000+ Americans died in Iraq and President Obama went after the actual enemy. England should think twice about who is telling them what before sending British soldiers to die in a criminal war that never should have happened.

It's a tragedy they didn't have a constant guard adjust for observation, they would have seen the goats approaching and could have ran down the ditch and probably disappeared at least kept an eye on the goats and The Herder. Sorry for those that were lost. Nobody wins all of them all of the time I still do not question the commitment of the SAS. Grateful for your service from an admiring Yank.

Winston Churchill arranged for the British Special Forces to start & train the American Special Forces during WWII. During one particular op, the Americans that were held in an Iraqi prison were tortured and revealed where some of the British SAS were hiding. Some were captured, tortured, but never broke to disclose the whereabouts of their team mates. After much negotiation they were released a long time later. The British SAS normally NEVER disclose their identity nor speak to the press. But they were so incensed by what happened to them that they did. They announced they would NEVER work with the Americans again. I am proud of have known an SAS soldier and they are still the best in the world. & God Bless ALL military members around the world, they are incredibly brave people...Thanks for the video

I try desperately not to nitpick at cases like this because I wasn't there. But even though I am a Marine Corps veteran and law enforcement officer I have never heard of a specific timeline or schedule that applies to the amount of ammo a man can carry.
Jarheads can carry all they want unless ordered to do otherwise. You can even see Seals, Force Recon, and other Tier 2 spec ops dudes carrying perhaps a dozen mags plus one in the rifle, which could be 390 rounds of 5.56NATO in 30 round mags or 260 if carrying 20 round mags. Either loadout has no calendar attached that I've heard of.

They are actually trained/expected to leave their men behind if it risked compromising their own lives and/or mission, including those captured or even those that are wounded but still alive. It's cold blooded but effective, and one of the main things that separates British SAS from, say, US Spec Ops who would do anything in their power to never leave a man or body behind.

In fact this mission started to unravel when they landed. Locals heard the chopper, one of whom was an ex-Republican Guard. He went looking the next day and spotted at least two of the team

The mission unravelled before they set out. They didn't have communication with mission control and no Intel going in completely blind and didn't anticipate digging problems didn't have a contingency plan and only 48 hours to get to a backup rendezvous point...the whole plan was poo poo from the beginning. It's as if they were sent on a suicide mission and refused to meet expectations.

nothing really got "accomplished". they went out there, and lost 3 members, and luckily keept thier lives.

Two things got accomplished, alot of chaos behind enemy lines and a good story. It was not luck that saved them. It was skills and determination. Luck had its role for sure.

Today's SAS are far, far more elite than anything before 9/11. Nowadays they are easily on par with SEALS or Delta, but yeah, back then (even as late as the 90s), they still weren't quite there. Small teams, unconventional warfare, behind enemy lines, covert ops, etc, of course, going back since WW2, but they weren't nearly as elite/badass as they are now. Still, they were pretty much the best the Brits had in terms of special operations at that time - and certainly nowadays.
Still, the mission was an abject failure. In fact, historically speaking, the large majority of SAS missions actually ended in failure dating back to WW2 since they were often assigned insurmountable tasks. I'm not hating, I have huge respect for these guys, just stating a little known fact. They only ever accomplished something between 30-40% of their missions. I'm sure that number is much higher now though, with their higher standards and advancements in selection and training. But yeah, most of their missions were basically suicide missions and gave the predictable results assigned to that term. If anything, they deserve more respect for that.
