NOTE: Several viewers have commented you can dip bent brushes into boiling water to straighten the bristles. There is some debate as to whether this should or shouldn't be done with synthetic brushes so try it at your own risk. However, if the bristles are bent, there's not much to loose in trying. Thanks so much for your positive feedback everyone!
What a video! I learned why my detail brush should not be my go to, why I would even want to mix colors and of course the gentle reminder to stop comparing. Your chatting brings a wealth of useable information so keep it up and thank you for sharing.
Yay! I'm so glad you learned some helpful tips for watercolor. Thanks so much for this feedback. You guys encourage and motivate me to keep sharing. Thanks again!
I love the way you add shadows with the pencil and paper stump. Very unique. I struggle with shading and shadows and will definitely try this technique out. Love the gnomes.
Thank you! I'm so glad you enjoyed the shading and are going to try it. I carry that over from my Zentangle drawing and find it more efficient than building up the color with watercolor. Gives it that extra special something. Thanks again!
I am so copying your zentangle swatch book. That is a perfect way to use zentangle in something we need, while beautifully displaying the different color combinations. Thanks for sharing. Your gnome painting is lovely, I like the colors you used.
Where to start? Your explanations answering “why” questions about water coloring mistakes are excellent! Your watercolor/Zentangle Journal is amazing! The shading on this card is inspirationally beautiful! Thank you so much for this video!
Louise your feedback is so appreciated and useful! I've been hesitant to release long videos, but sometimes I have more to share which suits the longer format better. I'm happy to hear I packed in some useful tips. Thanks again!
You have such a great way of explaining why. I still struggle at times with shading and mixing, I seem to do either too much or not enough, but every time I watch you I learn something new. Thank you for sharing.
That is such a beautiful card ... oh how I wish I had your talent! I also agree that your zentangle color maps are incredibly beautiful. U are a true artist ... thank you for your informative & inspirational videos! It’s so fun to watch you in action ... you seem to do it so effortlessly & believe me, I know it’s not!
Thanks so much for your kind words, Kathryn. It has come with practice and experimentation. There are definitely plenty of projects that don't turn out as I'd like. I consider those learning experiences. Thanks again!
These knomes are so cute!!! Your pallet is beautiful Amber! What a huge difference it makes to use your own created colors like you are doing! Amazing!!!!
Thanks so much, June. Oh, I love Norman Rockwell prints. When I was little my pediatrician's office was full of them. I remember those prints far more than any shots I got there.
Oh my goodness Amber, where to even start? This video just blew me away! I am fairly new to watercolour so ALL the information you shared was invaluable! I just took the plunge and purchased some Daniel Smith watercolours. I will now check out your links for brushes. Like everyone else I fell in love with your swatch book, not to mention this card. You are extremely talented and I am so appreciative that you shared this with us! Much love from Canada ❤️🇨🇦
Thank you so much, Didi! I'm so happy you enjoyed the video and are feeling inspired to create. You're going to love Daniel Smith watercolor. They're extraordinary. Thanks again for watching!

Thanks so much, Ruth! I have one set filmed, but I haven't checked the footage yet. If I caught it all hopefully I'll be able to post in the next couple of weeks. Stay tuned!
These are not my normal go-to colours, but they look fabulous! I always feel like I've learned something when I watch your videos and this one is great - full of information and tips! This card is just gorgeous!
Hey Amber....so it's been a while since I've seen one of your tutorials (except for 1 that I recently viewed) as for the past year I've been working on purging and re-organizing my craft room (1st time since I began my crafty journey in 7 years) and really haven't created much at all. That being said, I have watched a ton of craft & painting tutorials from some of the most popular channels. By the time I got to the end of your video, one thing spoke to me the loudest...girl, before my hiatus I always knew you had talent, but now, I see you have 'blossomed' not only in creativity but also with technique, knowledge and instruction. I can't put into words how cool it is to see this journey in others and I'm reminded of how crucial it is to practice a craft consistently if one wants to achieve growth. Amber, you're in full bloom now and I look forward to learning more from you. Well done, girl! Thanks for the lesson!
Nancy, I can't thank you enough for your kind words. I too have enjoyed my artistic journey. Sharing it with you all has given me the unique opportunity to document how it's evolved over time and as you said it makes all the practice and perseverance worth it! Thanks again, big hugs!
Oh my gosh, I absolutely love your color studies! I struggle with the standard swatch cards because I never want to take the time for something that's so boring. But I love your layouts! They are their own works of art!
Thank you, Traci! I'm so glad you like them. That's me as well. The squares are so boring that I kept putting them off. Until I saw a video by James Burke where he creates swatch dolls and a lightbulb went off that I could make them more fun. You can check out his video here ruclips.net/video/IjChSIKU8vs/видео.html. Thanks again!
Love your swatching method!!! This card is super cute, adorable gnomes!!! Thanks so much for sharing your time, talent, & creativity!!! Stay well, blessings!!!
Loved the way you did your color swatches. Not only are they beautiful, they look like a lot more fun to create than a normal swatch. Loved the little gnomes .
Thank you for your tips as always! I'm starting to lean towards hot press watercolor paper too. I feel the outcome is smoother and easily blends well without harsh lines.
I just love your watercoloring. I love watercoloring, it relaxes me. Beautiful watercoloring on your gnomes, all your gnomes are so cute 🥰 🎄💕😊awesome idea on the graphite pencil for shading.
Hello. I stumbled on your channel this afternoon and was so pleased to see this watercolor demonstration. You took the trepidation out of my trepidation. Lol I might give this a try only with colored pencils! Thank you I did subscribe to your channel.
Amber, fabulous video! The gnomes are darling. I love that you focused on the hats and all your brush hints. I'd really appreciate a video on your art journal that you're using for color studies. Also the music
Hi Amber, you hit the nail on the head for me, the paint brushes are my downfall right now. Trying to find the right ones for me. TYFS. Thank you for stressing the point of us not comparing ourselves to some else, that really does make all of the difference in our attitude towards painting. Please take care and stay safe. ~Barbara
You are so welcome, Barbara. I have to remind myself not to compare also. Brushes are so personal and what works best for one person or even a particular project isn't best for the next person/project. Happy brush hunting and thanks for watching!
Thank you for this video, I used your tips to color a similar gnome coloring page from one of Tatiana Bogema Stolova's Nice Little Town Christmas Series and it turned out well. I only have Kuretake but they were very similar colors,. Please do the video you were talking about how you do your zentangle swatch books and the process you use to determine a palette. I truly hate swatching and prefer just to use my color wheel and eye at the time of coloring but I love what you did there, it is just coloring a picture and that is a great idea for swatching because it accomplishes the goal in a very interesting way. I know swatching is important but it is so boring. However, I am at a point were I want to get more dynamic and complex in my color choices, not just the basic shades, and your zentangle pages are very inspiring
That's great! I'm so glad you were able to transfer it to other gnomes! The swatch videos are in the making. I totally agree, those little squares are so boring. Thanks again!
If you should ever mess up your brush in water again or being a little rough, you can stick the bristles in boiling water and they will usually pop right back into shape. I have brushes that I have been using for over 30 years, yup that’s no exaggeration, and this little trick has worked time and again. You’ve got nothing to lose giving this trick a try. I’m a pretty new subscriber and have to tell you that I really enjoy your channel. Thanks for all your sharing. 😊
Thanks so much, Cher. Several viewers have shared this fabulous tip and I'm ashamed to say I'm going to be trying it this weekend as my 6 round is a bit bent. I don't know how I managed to do it again without haven't left it in a jar. Face palm for sure! Thanks for watching and I'm so glad you're enjoying the videos.
Thanks for sharing all of your very helpful and useful knowledge. I bent a brush once and cleaned it with a brush cleaner that comes in a round container like men's shaving soap. I cleaned the brush once and rinsed then soaped it heavily and shaped it and left for at least a week....cleaned it real good and it straightened out. When I go to my studio I will look at name of soap and pass it on.
Thanks, Trudie. A couple people have commented that natural bristle brushes can be dipped in boiling water, but I've not heard of shaving soap yet. That's good to know! Thanks for the info and for watching!
Would love to see a video on how you do the study of colors and come up with the different designs and mix the colors etc. so creative and I love it!!!
Love the coloring (can't pick a favorite, but I love purples) and the great info you gave us. Also LOVE the artistic way you swatch your mixes. I'm just a card maker who's enjoying playing with watercolors, but never saw the need to mix colors other than adding white or black to lighten or darken a color. Will definitely watch your swatching video.
Right? I totally felt the same way about swatches. Didn't feel much need to do them. But, when I get bored of using the same colors I got curious about what other colors I could create. Thanks so much, Mary!
Oh my gosh! This is amazing! Not only did I learn so much, but just watching you was so relaxing! I agree, with the other comments your zen tangle journals of colors. Was amazing and I am so inspired to watch more to learn! Thank you so much for sharing your talent and knowledge!
Omg, this was so full of great information, techniques, and inspiration. I love these gnomes, your color palette. I was s thinking of bright sunny cheerful colors, but these muted, rustic are perfect for the gnomies!
Loved your imaginative way of creating color swatch pages. Your explanations were great and you have a very pleasant voice which makes experiencing your video so very nice. You're doing awesome!
I love when YT gets it right with suggestions. Fabulous demo and very informative. I’ve been working with watercolor for about a year, and I learned a few new tips from you, today. I’m totally looking forward to you creating a who-to for swatching out your colors. Your landscape journal with the examples was wonderful, and I so want to swatch in that fashion.
Your work is stunning. Even your swatches, I would frame. You have a great way of explaining and your tips were so helpful. To top it off, your voice and your tone are soothing! So glad I found you. Thank you for making and sharing your videos!
Hi Amber. I've just found you. Your gorgeous card is mind blowing. Love the beautiful more muted colours and your painting techniques and the graphite techniques for subtly shading are just amazing. Thank you so much for sharing your fabulous talent with us.
I just had an Amber double feature - watched the showdown video bcs I subscribe to Altenew, and just subscribed to your blog so watched this. Not normally a super gnome fan but love this! Your colour blending is inspirational. Love these colours so much! No. 6 is probably my fave as well. I'll stop now lol. Thanks so much.
So much good info, and a beautiful card!! Thank you for sharing your ideas. With no art training, I'm thinking, " So this is REAL water coloring. This is what it's all about!!"
Thank you, Sue! LOL, I don't have any professional art training either. I hesitate to call myself self-taught, because I learned so much from RUclips artists and of course experimenting. Thanks so much for watching!
@@NotableInk Inspirational. It helps to begin with a spot of talent, though, which you clearly have. I really enjoyed this video; opened my eyes!! Thanks so much.
Great video! Now I know why I have always had to re load pigment and water too many times...never thought to play around with dif size brushes brushes. I am buying this set of brushes for sure! Thank you!! I really love your various colors here..
Opps sent before ready. Loved the music! I need to learn how to print the digital images on watercolor paper with my printer. Going to go play with my watercolors!
Ha, happens to me all the time. Thanks for letting me know about the music. I don't often use music so that's good to know. Check out this video to set up your digital stamps. I use photoshop but similar principals can be applied to Word or other programs. ruclips.net/video/OXE3K-is_oA/видео.html Happy crafting!
I just found you and now subscribe.. I have the brush set that you have and yes they are great brushes. I love the gnomes and I think I like the 4th one. I love the colors. Your colors on all of them are great. I will be checking out more of your videos. I learned from this one. Thanks
This video was fabulous, Amber! I did the exact same thing just last week- left a brush overnight in water, and trimmed it to try to regain its shape! You happen to be skilled enough to have made it work anyway- not so much luck on my end. Thanks for the mixing tutorial- also very helpful, esp for taking the small amount of time required to create and confirm a project- specific palette. BTW, I thoroughly enjoyed your chatting thru the 5 hats...learned something all along g the way. Thanks so much for sharing this.
Thanks so much, Julie! I'm so glad you found it helpful. You know I imagine brush makers have years and/or decades of experience trimming brushes. I definitely don't have enough experience with it to keep trying, LOL! Thanks again, Julie!
I subscribed about a third of the way thru. EVERYTHING about this video was helpful, calming and so enjoyable. Thank you so very much. Your talking thru everything was great, the music was good, and I'm inspired!
Wow; you are really knowledgeable & good at what you do! I honestly clicked on this video by accident, but it turned out to be so good that I watched it the whole way through. I do paintings in watercolor occasionally, but never thought of making a palette the way you have; what a terrific idea. Also found the tips on using brushes & what not to do, helpful.Thank you ! New subbie!
This is one of the first videos of yours that I have ever seen. (Subbed) The colors you used were so beautiful and rich. Thank you for your wonderful explanations. Your zentangle color charts were absolutely incredible. I know what I'll be doing tomorrow with my little set of watercolors. Keep up your awesome work and I look forward to seeing more!
My favorite hat is the first one - I would like to say I learned so much watching you but to apply it is another thing - I try to paint on my cards and it just does not turn out - but I am not giving up, I am going to continue to try but I am now thinking about my brushes - maybe I need a number 8, I have always been using a number 2 and going back and forth constantly - THANKS.
Just came across your channel. New subscriber here! Learned so much from just one video. Excited to see more. Thank you for sharing your talent and experience!
Just subscribed! Loved EVERYTHING...your tips, the gnomes (they’re in my Etsy cart), your swatches and color palette, etc. I’m going to commit 2021 to learning to watercolor so I’m looking forward to learning more from you.

Omg, this was so full of great information, techniques, and inspiration. I love these gnomes, your color palette. I was s thinking of bright sunny cheerful colors, but these muted, rustic are perfect for the gnomies!

Thanks so much, Julie! I'm so glad you found my channel. Stay tuned for the swatch journal and thanks again!
Your work is stunning. Even your swatches, I would frame. You have a great way of explaining and your tips were so helpful. To top it off, your voice and your tone are soothing! So glad I found you. Thank you for making and sharing your videos!
Thank you so much! I'm thrilled you enjoyed my video and found my channel. See you again soon.
Hi Amber. I've just found you. Your gorgeous card is mind blowing. Love the beautiful more muted colours and your painting techniques and the graphite techniques for subtly shading are just amazing. Thank you so much for sharing your fabulous talent with us.
I prefer the non splattered ones! Merry Christmas.
That's the beauty of art, you get to make it your own. Thanks for watching, Awenda and Merry Christmas to you too!!
I’m just starting watercolor thanks for your tips

Glad it was helpful. Thank you, Diane!
I’m 10 minutes in and already this is an amazing tutorial on color mixing. Love the muted color palette you achieved.
Thanks so much, Annika! I’m so glad you enjoyed it.
what an adorable card!! thanks for your great tips - I've shared it with my mom, because we both struggle with watercoloring!
You're so welcome and thank you, Terri!
Yay! Thanks so much, Pauline. These were two of my longest videos so you had a big dose this morning. 😂Thanks so much for watching and subscribing!
Oh my goodness those are cute gnomes - what an adorable painting - thanks for sharing
Thank you, Leanne!
@@suetownsend1932 Thank you, Sue!
Such awesome tips. Love this card and the 4th and 6th are my favorites ❤️
Thanks so much, Kimberly! I love those too!
I subscribed even without hearing the audio! Your tips are great. This might inspire me to actually dig out my materials and paint! Thank you.
Thanks so much! I hope you get some painting in!
@@NotableInk Thanks, Amber. I hope so too. Maybe if I just doodle a bit I'll get my engine running.
Great video! Now I know why I have always had to re load pigment and water too many times...never thought to play around with dif size brushes brushes. I am buying this set of brushes for sure! Thank you!! I really love your various colors here..
So glad it was helpful, Melissa. I think you'll really enjoy these brushes. Thanks so much!
I use photoshop but similar principals can be applied to Word or other programs. ruclips.net/video/OXE3K-is_oA/видео.html
Happy crafting!
Beautiful colours! So cute. Love the first gnome. I just bought watercolours but will get the brush you recommended. Thank you!

These guys look amazing!
Thanks, Taylor!
I just found you and now subscribe.. I have the brush set that you have and yes they are great brushes. I love the gnomes and I think I like the 4th one. I love the colors. Your colors on all of them are great. I will be checking out more of your videos. I learned from this one. Thanks
Thanks so much, Billie. I love the colors of those stripes too. Huge thanks for subbing!
Thank you very much, Beaghmne! I'm so glad you liked it and found it helpful!
New subbie!
Well that was a happy accident indeed! Thanks so much for watching all the way through, Kathleen! I hope to see you again soon!
Thank you very much, Lisa. I'm so glad you've found my channel and video helpful. I hope to see you again soon. Happy painting!
Absolutely gorgeous. Thank you for your tips, always trying new things to improve my watercolour painting. 😊
You're so welcome and thank you, Janette!
What a great, and beautiful, swatching idea. Thank you for sharing that :)
Thanks so much, Kathryn!
@@NotableInk It would be lovely to see how you create your detailed colour swatches - art works in themselves!
Love love LOVE!!! Thanks for sharing.
Thank you, Suna!
Thanks so much! I'm so glad you found my channel and hope to see you again soon!
Just subscribed! Loved EVERYTHING...your tips, the gnomes (they’re in my Etsy cart), your swatches and color palette, etc. I’m going to commit 2021 to learning to watercolor so I’m looking forward to learning more from you.
