  • Destiny 2 Forsaken was the best year in Destiny 2 history. In fact, I believe it was the only time Destiny 2 was actually good. Crucible PvP was definitely at it's peak during the Forsaken year as well which plays a factor in why D2 was in a great place, alongside the influx of consistent content. Destiny 2 State of The Game thoughts included...

I miss when destiny pvp was an fps game and not what bs ability/build you find and abuse. Over the years, the already fairly small skill expression has diminished so much in order to protect the little timmy's in control that they've made it so boring.

Foresaken was definitely peak destiny, season of opulence in particular. I remember doing all I wanted to do and then just kept on playing because it was just so damn fun. Would run zero hour countless times to help friends and random people get their outbreaks, ran so much menagerie that I could run it with my eyes closed and the community as a whole was so much healthier.
I'm hanging on by a thread at the moment and it if it wasn't for recently discovering a fantastic clan, I'd have dropped destiny completely

I have taken breaks for sure but I do think this series is one of the best series in video game history and it is fun. I enjoy the balance between pve to PvP. I played apex heavily hit Diamond multiple times and trust until you play a BR like that, that is a never ending hamster wheel. I do think bungie is a good team and always has been since halo. But sure they do a lot for money and I am personally scared for marathon as I feel they will try to push Destiny off. Respect your take though. I started D1 when my friend introduced it to me on their Xbox one summer afternoon, I fell in love, and even my brother had been begun playing. Though as I was younger I never had the cash or know-how to do cool things. Eventually when I got a proper console, my first pick of game was the destiny collection. Then I got D2 as that came around. I got friends to play, and eventually got enough confidence to start raiding. As a casual gamer, the yearly expansions are usually enjoyable, but with current model, by the time first season ends I am not playin the game past that. I pay attention to everything that’s happening, but I don’t buy into seasons hard. By your channel very recently I decided to go back to D1 and try Wrath with my raiding experience, and it was some of the most I ever had with Destiny.

I play destiny because of how adept bungee is at making guns fun to shoot, I don’t know how they do it but when I’m signing on just to shoot a gun at a wall because of how satisfying it is, multiple times over the years then they’re doing something right.
Forsaken sandbox definitely wasn’t the most balanced but that’s probably why it was the best era, it was fun. Sometimes fun and balanced just don’t line up and let’s not pretend destiny pvp can ever be a real competitive title, so balancing towards that goal puts it further and further away from something this franchise does so well, having you shoot fun guns at each other while duelling.

Actually Forsaken was a big middle finger to Activision. If Activision had its way, Forsaken would've been another casual experience trying to make as much money as possible, but everyone would've finally dropped the game for. Activision hated the fact Forsaken didn't "perform" well enough in terms of revenue and that was what caused the split. Do not get it wrong; Activision was one of the main reasons D2 launched in such a poor, casual friendly state it did.

If you still are active on the game, you log on every Tuesday to see where the story is going, and then log off, and wait till next Tuesday. At least that's what I do. It's gotten to the point where I've forgotten about D2 entirely because I've been having so much fun with better games like Tears of the Kingdom (which feels like it was crafted by gods compared to D2). I'm saying this even as someone who's been playing since D1 and it's really disappointing. I just wanna know what happens in The Final Shape but I think I'm done after that

Yeah, basically that's what Bungie relies on. It's not a great game you can't wait to play. It's the habitual behavior they've programmed in. That's why Xur comes every week with different stuff, the seasonal story comes at a trickle and why ADA with different mods every day. It's all to reinforce the habit-forming behavior. At some point you realize that you're not logging on to have fun, it's only because of the carefully crafted habit they've programmed in.

I started playing Destiny 2 the first time in went Free-to-Play for a week around Forsaken. I played the Red War campaign and after finishing it, I bought Forsaken and the other 2 DLC (CoO and WM -> meh) and every Season and DLC after Forsaken until the season before Beyond Light. After the Forsaken year, D2 went downhill and with BL and Sunsetting, I realized that D2 will never be as good as it was at Forsaken. At that point, I had 3,000+ hours of playtime and while I didn't want it all go to waste, I also didn't want to waste more time on it. So, I started to play less and less and finally quit D2 around the release of Witch Queen (when the monetization got out of hand -> 25€ for the anniversary pack and so on). I still like to look into the state of D2 every now and then (I guess I invested too much time to fully let go), but I don't want to play it ever again. I am just too burnt out.

I joined a year ago but actively kept an ear out on destiny content since it first released, my biggest gripe about destiny 2 is that the content is finite. If I wanted to play destiny I can have everything in that game from launch to rise of iron. In destiny 2 there’s so much content that is just permanently gone that I’ll never be able to experience myself. What’s worse is that it’s in the back of my mind when I play current content. I got to play the haunted leviathan but that’s gone, I got to watch Crow kill Caital’s bestie but that’s gone now, even now I have a hard time enjoying Titan activities because Titan is a seasonal activity and next expansion it’ll be gone too. The last thing I did in witch queen was play the haunted leviathan one last time, how many did that for the menagerie, for the red war, for Io, Mercury, the tangled shore, for actual Titan? Sunsetting and the content vault is single handedly the most egregious and worst thing about destiny 2 and I’ll stand by that statement.

At first I didn't really like it all that much but as time went on I came around and enjoyed my time in D1. Now D2 I'm a day 1 vanilla player and I've been through all the junk this games gone through except I took a break before the release of shadow keep and returned like 2 months later. I loved the Forsaken time frame of this game just so much going on stuff to do everyday of the week and always found odd ways to oof myself cause it was hilarious. Now that love and fun has kinda just faded away leaving with this empty feeling that honestly sucks. This current season is just bleh in my opinion and 3 or so weeks in I wanna just hang it up and take a break play some other games I put on the back burners. I'm not gonna miss out on anything cause let's be really it's the same stuff from prior seasons just reskinned and renamed so I'm not gonna miss out on anything "new" or "exciting". Honestly, I just feel burnt out with playing a lot of these games you play for a couple months all of your gear and everything you worked hard for it gets reset then you have to restart the grind all over again if it happens, it’s not so bad but I just couldn’t take it anymore so I stopped playing.
Eventually, just feeling like a chore like it was something I was forced to do just so I could do something that I would be able to enjoy later.

I joined right at the end of Shadowkeep. I got there when the expansions before Beyond Light were free to play for a bit. So, even though I never played Destiny 2 before that era, I still miss it. I miss Red War and fighting Ghaul. I miss Warmind, I miss Forsaken, I want to avenge Cayde again. And even though it was one fo the most hated expansions, I'm very disappointed that I never got to finish Corse of Osiris, the boss fight at the end was just too hard for my fledgling Warlock brain. I miss having fun with this game. The first time I have had genuine fun with gaming was playing Payday 2 for the first time and reinstalling Fortnite (I know, cringe).
Another note, I started playing Destiny 1 in 2021 and got The Collection in 2022. I missed so much from the launch of this wonderful game. I wish I could go back to see what it was like. I want to go back. I want to experience it, but I was late to the party. I wish i could have just 1 day to experience this game in its prime. I want it. I want it, just 1 day. But I can't. Time goes on. Besides Gambit and the possibility of Final Shape being half-decent. I think I've given up on Destiny 2. It is so sad to see a game I once wanted to do nothing but enjoy fall into such ruin. I loved this game, I still do, but it has jsut prolonged its stay just a but much. It's jsut not fun for me anymore. If you need me, I'll be on Fortnite, just glad I was able to see that game in it's amazing beginning.

Damn I came back to destiny from d2 vanilla when it went f2p in shadowkeep. I dropped it after a couple of months. If I’d had known that year was the best year for f2p due to most f2p content getting removed in beyond light I would’ve played it non stop. Played a lot of f2p last year and whilst there was an enjoyable grind for certain weapons to do the f2p raids, it feels like there’s something missing. Shadowkeep f2p never had that due to all the content available

The entire year in general was great because destiny was a lot more simplistic while still containing a lot of content. The leviathan was mysterious but amazing. The seasons were cool as hell especially opulence. The menagerie and black armory were great. I think a lot of the mystery value in destiny has been lost in some aspects and instead are now confusing and overwhelming. If it was possible I wish someone would release a version of the game that was stuck in that year if that was possible😂. The game feels different now and I personally still enjoy it but something about the old times will never be topped. I wish I played more of it because I think during forsaken I was on and off and I’ve played destiny since d1 and even in d2 I logged in at the time 300 hours at least. It’s a shame in a sense because I feel like new players will never experience that ever.

the waiting room analogy hit hard. I think the sad thing about D2 now is that Bungie have already mostly moved onto new games. They will likely invest in a quality drop for final shape, but the future of this type of game and future live service games is likely to be bouts of tedium and beta stages, interspersed with a few quality drops to keep hope alive.
i actually decided the other day to delete two of my characters, simply to reduce the time i commit to playing and working up each class, most of which, despite new exotics and subclasses, feel very stale and use fairly static builds for high end content despite reworked exotics, it still feels very much the same excepting for eg strand titan.

When I first played destiny 1 I loved it because of going around and exploring. Even though there was no content I enjoyed just being in the world and that was enough for me. As for D2 there isn’t much exploration outside of OoB stuff and know my focus has shifted to being a solo/ solo flawless PvE content player. PvP is being shafted in trials and QP and funny enough where I use to hate Comp is now my favorite mode. All in all for me my time in D2 is spent practicing solo PvE content and playing comp and not interacting with new raids.

I bought the expansion every year since D1, and even if I didn't play much of the seasonal content (I hate this fomo format), I still liked the campaign a bit (especially Forsaken and Witch Queen). But Lightfall felt hollow for me. I'm a lore guy and I felt bad when I saw they wouldn't explain what the Veil is. I don't like strand (It's not bad, it's just I've always mained Voidwalker warlock) so Lightfall had nothing to offer me beyond good gun play (even then, we have a lot of reskins every year). That's why I had a refund for it on my Xbox and I've stopped playing Destiny. I still follow for the lore and I bought the last Grimoire anthology but that's it. Bungies philosophy towards new destiny content is to drip-feed small amounts of new content packaged within reissued old content that have minor changes. While putting heavy emphasis on microtransactions and anti-user buissness tactics.
Aka increasing the cost of the delux edition yearly bundle. Or timesaving solutions (that cost real money) to problems they intentionally create. Aka the season pass buy one rank up system Or the skip the campaign feature.

I was thinking about this the other day; how Destiny 1, even to this day, still holds mystery and intrigue. The way the stories are told and the satisfying grind compared to the seemingly cheap knockoff we have today in D2. The DNA of vanilla D2 is still here; A casual experience trying to pawn itself as something more serious like its predecessor. D2's art style, as you've pointed out, is a downgrade. The content, Bungie's whole approach is completely different and, while I started and quit in D1 and only recently came back in season 17, I'm finding this to be more true as time goes by sadly.

Beyond Light was Bungie's last chance, because Shadowkeep alone was not as good as Forsaken and another year of content below the Forsaken standard was not appealing to me. Beyond Light was good... but coupled with the Seasonal Model, Transmog, and the DCV, along with countless sunsetting and unsunsetting of weapons and gear that came during that year, It had run it's course.
Season of the Hunt was barely a season, but Harbinger was a cool mission. Chosen was not fun for me: I liked the story/theme, but battlegrounds to me are like being at a rock concert - I can only take so much of them before I need to decompress. Presage was cool but I don't want to run it weekly. Splicer is one of my favorite seasons because I loved the story and seasonal activity. Splicer is the only Title I ever got in D2. I loved expunge missions and I loved soloing them to get that title.
The moment I broke was sometime in Season of the Lost. The 30th anniversary pack, which was the reason witch queen was delayed, was basically Bungie jerking off in front of us (pardon the imagery) and asking us to pay for it. Not only was it thematically completely offbeat from the actual story of D2, it was just another activity to pay for to grind with no narrative and boring loot (no I'm not going to pay $20 for a Gjallarhorn, when I can just play D1 and use it). Then Lost's ritual weapons didn't even have quests to them: you had to reset your rank once for the rocket launcher and once for the skin for each playlist. 6 resets in a 6-month season is lazy and boring. The story was a giant time-water that you didn't care about because you already knew Xavathun was the main antagonist of Witch Queen. And then.... the icing on the loser cake... the last mission launched in the last week only, and it was bugged for the first two days.
That right there in Season of the Lost is Bungie's Destiny 2 in a nutshell. Lazy, lackluster, recycled/reused, no story, way more grind than anyone except a streamer wants, and as monetized as ever. Somewhere in November 2021 to February 2022, the realty of Destiny 2 hit me. It's a fun game, but Bungie finally succeeded in making it into a bad game in that time period (if not sooner).
I never played Destiny 2 after Season of the Lost ended. I heard the Witch Queen campaign is good, but I'm already done giving Bungie money. My money is going somewhere else, to other game developers that care about making a quality product. Bungie clearly does not care about making a quality product anymore, and hasn't since Forsaken.

8:45 me who plays Genshin Impact and Honkai Star Rail, yep I know what it's like to do boring content every day on repeat. I'm also a player who's been around since D1, came in at end of vanilla D2 into Forsaken then quit awhile in. I come back off and on, and honestly I am active again and having a lot of fun. Maybe because I haven't really played much with the current seasonal model, and haven't been grinding day in day out to feel the drag as much as other people. Heck, a buddy and me who basically met on Destiny 2 have been playing around the same pace, so he's back in with me. We just did Vault of Glass opening and Confluxes as a duo.
I like the idea of personal challenges and things like flawless solo dungeons appeal to me also. The problem is the stupid paywall, and I only have like two dungeons open currently. The other issue is pvp has been ruined when the game went to steam and f2p, too many closet cheaters, cronus users, wallers and whatever else. So it's robbed me wanting to commit more to the game, because pvp is the selling point to me. It's why I kind of have been not so interested, because Bungie won't get dedicated servers or do a better job addressing the cheating.
Forsaken was the best time in Destiny 2, the Dreaming City, the Last Wish raid being one of the best raids in all of Destiny, lot of action and intense encounters. Shuro Chi is so intense, then the Riven Cheese lmao. Oh well, the golden years are gone, just gotta take it in pockets of enjoyment and find personal goals with the game to enjoy it. Then when it's boring again just quit and come back again later.

I had a lot of fun playing PvP until the population pool died and lag took over.
I enjoyed content creation until I realized none of it matters for as long as the meta never changes, even despite sweeping balancing changes.
I enjoyed making goofy builds until it took 20 matches to make the gimmick work.
I enjoyed trials until the loot became meaningless, light level advantage makes me lose 50% of engagements, and all the other issues trials brings.
I enjoyed shooting a gun until my gun stopped connecting.
Destiny 2 is exactly as you say. A bad game that I feel obligated to play because I thought it was better value to drop $100 bucks on the annual pass, to not play the new dungeon once because it feels like garbage to play, PvP not changing, PvE being meaningless outside of select scenarios, and so many other reasons. Fun experiences are truly like finding a needle in a haystack, but ending up shoving that needle up your arm. Fantastic video.

Bungie seems to be unable to experiment with higher player counts in pve and pvp spaces. This is why a destiny 3 is needed, there aren't any more 3player or 6player activities that bungie could think up that wouldn't instantly feel repetitive

It was a very fun time for the game, and lots happened (and quickly so) in every match, unlike the war of attrition, ranged lame-out disaster we have today
Forsaken was so not perfect, but that makes it so incredibly sad that it and the following year were still probably where fun peaked in Destiny 2, particularly PvP but one could argue overall too
Forsaken was the peak of a game that could’ve gone further above that point and likely never will
