Hunting over bait of any kind is absolutely no different than fishing. When you fish you use a lure or bait to catch a fish. At that point you can catch and release or put it in the cooler, live well,or what have you. The same goes for hunting over bait. Corn, food plot, oats etc. You choose whether or not to shoot the deer or let it walk. Hunting tags are too expensive to get skunked year after year. You should take advantage of whatever legal method to be successful in you hunt and put meat in your freezer.

@C O Baiting also includes mineral sites and protein licks. Helps for deer health, especially in tough winters and during gestation. I love knowing I'm helping the deer herd (as well as any other wildlife that avail themselves to it) to be healthier. Does Baiting make it easier? Yup, a lot of the time, old bucks not so much. But, it's fun, makes the season seem to last longer. Even makes you feel closer to the wildlife. Nonhunters won't understand that last statement but I know you probably will. From Wisconsin by the way.

@C O Michigan white tail are the most elusive and difficult big game to hunt in North America because we have generations of families who've hunted here. The deer are extremely pressured and have adapted to that pressure so, yes, let us bait because it's still not a guaranteed kill in this state by any stretch of the imagination. The baiting law is a spit in the face of all us hunters that do everything to abide by the rules of the sport. I know multiple people who quit hunting because they relied on that bag of corn set out in a suburban country areas hunting small lots of land. Theres only so much you can do to the land to get the deer to inhibit there living standards to be there, that's fact Jack. I'm 110% against the ban on baiting. @BWMya see it's the people like you that just dont understand at all, might as well be a "scientist in the deer world on this case" from your lack of knowledge on the subject at hand. Fish in a barrel definitely not, an attraction for the deer, feed for the deer to get them through hard times of winter months, what's the difference if someone has corn 25yds away from a hunting stand if they're hunting 100yds away from a corn field, or an apple 50yds away from some apple trees just dumb politics being thrown onto something that isnt 1. Going to fix CWD OR EHD. 2. Going to cut down on congregating deer, theres plenty of apple orchards, soybean fields, corn fields, brassicas fields, etc. Where deer congregate at an excessive rate. Are farmers going to be asked to quit farming? Hell no. But throwing out some vegetation/forage/food for a deer's benefit is frowned upon to make ends meet for someones freezer? Not every deer that walks into a deer hunters view is going to be shot or killed. Not like were hunting with machine guns here. So yeah you may call it "bitching" but no it's our right as an american citizen of this country to stand by what we believe in.

I guess you guy's should fight for your right to bait deer. It hasn't been allowed in Washington State, since I started hunting at 11 year's old. But If you aren't afraid to walk + stalk you will tag your deer anyway. A good stand on a well beaten trail, heading to water or where they feed also will produce a deer. A good hunter, ( Which is a learned task) can harvest a deer anywhere they roam.

The "science" behind banning "bait" is not real science. Deer hunting is a Huge industry. From major companies to small town stores. Lots of hunters do not have the time or ability to improve the land they hunt. So they use "bait" which for most is corn. When you take away something that people use to be successful deer hunting. Alot of those people stop hunting. Hunting in general has been on the decline for a long time. We should want to add hunters not loose them.

Well spoken Ted. You are in the woods a whole lot and have many years of experience hunting and watching deer. I appreciate your passion, and share it with you. You are 100% correct about deer swapping spit. It doesn't matter if it's under an apple tree, a farm field, or bait in the woods.Banning baiting in any form is devastating to the farmers and stores who sell it. There is zero evidence to prove that baiting has any negative effect or spreads CWD faster than any of those other entities. CWD is no new disease, just testing for it is recently more advanced and prevalent. Because of that, the DNR panics when a few deer here and there test positive for the disease. CWD was around when baiting was unlimited and there were piles of apples, corn, sugarbeets and carrots by hunter's stands and blinds. It has been around for the years when 2 gallons was the limit. None of the baiting was a factor, just more and better CWD testing, so more deer have been detected with the disease. I agreed with spreading the bait out, and mainly used shelled corn. I never saw deer nose to nose on my bait with many years of hunting. Yes, sometimes there were a few deer there, but with the bait spread out, it was just as natural feeding as they experience in a crop field, under apple trees, or grazing on clover or grass. I'm so disgusted that for the 1st time in many years I'm not bowhunting. I have limited time because of work, and the baiting ban turned me away. Ted, Curt....keep fighting for us. Proud of both of you for standing up for us hunters, and being our voice!

Michigan has an island out in lake Michigan that is state property and was largely designated as a state game area. There was no hunting there and the deer followed a cycle of propagation to starvation then death. This pattern repeated itself over and over until the state decided to manage the game there. The state offered free deer to any hunters that would travel and hunt there during a designated time period. The program was largely effective at managing the deer herd. All of this was provided by license fees and did not adversely affect the state in any way. Here, the social programmers are just imposing their authority over the herd of the population. I don't see how anyone that is sane and thinks clearly would ever vote for a Marxist democrat. As a former resident of the state, I implore the citizens there to retake their authority over the state and take it out of the hands of these imbeciles.

No matter how you hunt you are in one way or another hunting over bait. Deer feed all of time. Just in different places. Think about it. You hunt a run way. That deer is on the way to feed somewhere. Where I hunt deer would be pushed around due to hunters moving. Now there are not as many hunters. So if you try sit on a run you might see 5 or 6 deer all day. I put out apple's, beats and corn. I see deer all day. When the rut starts the big bucks will come looking for the does that are near my feed. I can choose the one I want. Yes I could sit further away on a run. But thay deer is going to my feed. Its all the same. I get to stay on my property. Nothing gets taken from my stand and I can see deer.

My wife and I are able to collect a few apples but neither of us are able to walk about the woods much. Baiting also allows a hunter to be more selective and patient with their kill shot. Hound hunting for bear and cougar also makes more sense. When an animal is treed the hunter can then make the decision to take the animal or not eliminating hasty shots at animals such as sows with cubs or cougars with kittens.

My deer have never looked healthier.

To me, Baiting is not hunting.
There is no skill or hardship in putting food on the ground and waiting for an animal to walk over it so you can get your shot. If those individuals want to stop hunting; good. They were never hunters.
To me, spending weeks to months scouting land to find the natural occurring food sources; where you may or may not find a tree with correct shooting visibility from your stand. And planning and putting in the time to find success in those difficult circumstances makes hunting what it is. It's not supposed to be easy, you're not always supposed to succeed. To those who quit who cannot put food on the ground 300 yards from there truck, I hope they do quit. This means more mature bucks for the people who are willing to work.

Losing deer hunters every year will eventually result in more deer-car collisions. More damage to the people of Michigan (and Georgia, too, where I live, if this happens here). More deer because they aren't being harvested. Overpopulation, leading to starvation and herd collapse. Allowing the baiting of deer gives the ethical hunter the chance to take out select deer, improving the herd genetics. Baiting allows ethical hunters to identify injured or diseased deer and take them out of their suffering. I could go on and on.

Just Remember Deer are Social animals they lick sniff each other front to rump , Open hayfields under a old oak tree . Sad to see What Government has done to Hunting the price of a deer tag , it use to be 15.00 dollars My Dad is 84 and even with his age he is paying 4 times that . I live in Missouri landowners get free deer & turkey tags 5 acres or more we can not bait , but can grow food plots . and we have a huge number of deer with CWD . Ask yourself this what did the DNR do with the Deer Farm in Houghton lake 1996 what testing what diseases they Use and turned the deer free all over Michigan , Soon after the TB outbreak started Alpena South Boardman . I plan on going up to hunt with dad and my son grand girl , I will be a spotter , no firearm . I refuse to pay the price of a out of state tag . Ban on Bait and all that Revenue lost . Also begging us to clean up the population of deer because the wolves are infiltrating cities and towns.
