Great review, please keep your tips and tricks coming you do an excellent job in helping people at any level of flight experience get the most out of the product. I just bought this bird and can't wait to get outside later today. I hope you keep us informed anytime you find something new that the alias can do....thanx on behalf of a lot of flyers I'm sure
Best review of the Alias I've seen and I like your mods. I think Alias should give me the flying experience I need before moving up to a video drone plus have fun learning.
Did anyone laugh when he flew it into the traffic sign? Great informative and educational video. I own the Aton so that’s not as durable 😕but makes up for it in speed ,Power and a plethora of other options.
I have the Ominus but I think my Alias out performs it, It's just a lot more responsive with good flight times. Does anyone know if La Traxx will be coming out with a newer version of the Alias or should I just buy a backup now? I did enjoy your video and seeing your upgrades, cool looking one of a kind Quad. 👍👍. Let's see if they copy your configuration, I would if I were them!
Great review Jhawk what are your thoughts on the mmw motors?, better control and quality or fast and shorter flight time. I have the dark edition but not installed yet should I get familiar with the Alias first then install or is it more beneficial to just install it while I am getting use to the Alias? thanks again for a great review?
+jarka1361 My first foray into quads was both a Proto X and a Hubsan H107L for indoor flying. After that, I purchased a Syma X5C~1 for outdoor flying. When I first got my Syma, I thought I was so cool with the ease of flips and overall control that I started trying distance runs instead of close quarter flying. That's where my Syma showed itself for the suckiness that it was. Constant fly off's and in any wind condition above 5 mph the bulk of the craft turned it into a lumbering piece of crap. Fed up, I gave the #1 rated Latrax Alias clone, the Nihui U807, a try. I still have it and it flies like a champ in wind gusts of up to 10 mph ( with patience ). My grandson now wants to fly, so I decided to finally purchase a Alias so when he comes to visit I can train him with him on the Nihui with me on the Alias. My two X5C~1's eventually flew off to who knows where ( probably hanging in tree's somewhere ) and I really don't care. The only thing I miss is the batteries that were installed in them. They were JUNK !!! Decent flyers ... but JUNK !!! compared to my Nihui.
Kymarb2 eBay! I purchased everything from eBay. There is somewhat of a noticeable difference, yes. Slightly longer flight times, but in the long run your motors will last longer.
Hi jhawk1977, I purchased the Latrax Alias, based on your recommendation; very excited :)! I have a quick question, concerning batteries, I want to purchase maybe 3-4 additional batteries, but concerned that it will take forever to charge each additional battery with the supplied USB charger. What do you recommend I purchase that will allow me to charge additional batteries at the same time (that is not expensive)? I have seen the dual Traxxas Dual USB Battery Charger for sale, but not sure if it will charge other third party batteries, like the Lectron Pro 3.7 volt 700 mAH Lipo Battery; but it only charges two batteries at a time. Do you know of other third party batteries that would be good for the Latrax Alias and any cheap chargers that would charge several at a time as well as the supplied Latrax Alias battery?
Very nice video! Question.. Where can I buy a battery that offers more flight time without any modification to the quad itself? Maybe a higher mah rating.
I've just started flying quadcopters, and have been using my Syma X5C to do multiple flips, just by starting off an eversion then just as its mid flip cutting the throttle! It flips too fast to count, kick the throttle back in as late as you dare! I wonder how much of a rush it would be to have a button that does this. Then again expert mode without leveling looks like it would be a beast to handle =D
Hi; Great information! A couple of questions... I learned to fly quads on a Ares Ethos QX130. Do you think this would be a good next step up? I'm debating between this one and something from Hubsan with GPS for nearly the same price but am not sure about Hubsan customer service and reported flyaways. Finally, do you find the lights bright enough for orientation at dusk? I can barely see the lights on my Ethos and that has been my biggest frustration with that quad.
It depends on your flying style. Yes, the Latrax Alias is well lit and looks good at night. I can clearly see from a good distance. It's a sport flyer though. If you're looking at a GPS quad, you're looking at something that wants to be more stable, which means, slower more stabilized flight.
@@jhawk1977 Thanks! I never really thought about it that way and it makes perfect sense now. I'm really not interested at this time in aerial photography but did like the GPS features like return to home and that's why I asked. But I think something like this is really more what I'm looking for - a sport flyer like you said. Thanks again.
Great review! Thanks for that. where did you buy shielded bearings?. Your engine MMW ''CL0820-17-11T 'Dark Edition' how is the battery life of this engine? Do you know where to find this in Europa?
Have you tried flying it with a different transmitter like the DX6 or 8, or do you like the stock transmitter. I am completely new to this and just got my Latrax Alias a few days ago. I have bad control of it right now even in the normal mode.
Nice video, JHawk. You covered a lot of the cool features of the Alias that many other videos skip over. I've been flying this quad for about a year now and absolutely love it. it's the most responsive and smoothest flying unit I've tried. I have posted a few videos on stunt flying with the Alias and converting them to FPV if you have time to check them out.
I went to Ebay to the site you recommended for the shielded bearings and they were not on ebay. Can you recommend where I could purchase them? Thanks in advance for your help. Your review was great keep up the good work; Bill
I´m thinking to getting this has my first drone and I´m also planning on placing a Sony AS100v action cam on it (90g) would you recommend this? or what other drone should I consider?
+tattotoro To follow up on JHawk's comment: The Alias is capable of carrying lightweight keychain video camera's though. The Mobius Action Cam is one example. There are cheaper one's other than the Mobius, but as the old saying goes ... " You get what you pay for ".
I was looking at the Alias motors from micro motor warehouse . There are two sets of motors for the Alias . They look like the same motors except one is a dark edition and the other is seems to be plain . Is there any difference in these motors ?
+Kymarb2 The Dark Edition are more powerful. The Alias baseline replacement motors from Micro Motor Warehouse are still more powerful than stock Alias motors, so I'd advise against mixing and matching the MMW baseline motors with stock Alias motors.
I have the Ominus and the Alias. The Ominus has a difficult time with wind over 5mph and is not as stable as the Alias. It tends to do the "Wobble of Death" when coming down from altitude. The Alias costs more but is a much superior product. I would say the Ominus is good for a beginner, inexpensive and durable but not as precise.
It can go pretty far but it is hard to see should do it at dawn so it's nice and light and a little dark Trust me I did mine when the sun was shinning bad idea couldn't see it for a bit
Thanks, I have been doing a lot of home work on the Alias, I am expecting it to come in the mail tomorrow, I have been wanting one for a while now !!! Cant wait !!! How about a suggestion on a good tool kit ??
Albert Aguirre i have handled both, and I can definitely say the Alias is more sturdy, although you aren't going to be breaking the Ominus with regular wear and tear
The brushed motors on the alias only last about 14 hours flight time each and replacement motors are $20 each and you have to buy a pack of 2. I suggest go ahead and spend the $300 for the Traxxas aton with brushless motors and have a blast for a long time only replace its batteries with a bias 5000 35c, because it doesn't swell as the Traxxas battery does

WHOA! Your white/red scheme is TIGHT!

Thanks for the great review!
Really enjoyed watching you fly!

Wow just picked one of these , and it's true it's awesome indestructible and lots of fun, great $99 , you can buy. it handles outdoor well too
Great video, I have a Syma x5c right now but looking into one of those. So thank you for all your information.

Very informative video ........nice !!!!

Nice review. Just bought one a couple hours ago. Can't find a concrete answer on their range.

mchelios It's not great in the wind. You really want calm conditions.
Very nice video! Question.. Where can I buy a battery that offers more flight time without any modification to the quad itself? Maybe a higher mah rating.
Ya dont

I have a budget of 150 dollars should I get this or something else (I have some experience )
+Adam Kasper Tought to answer. There are SOOOO many quads out there now. It's a good option for sure.
Great review! Thanks for that. where did you buy shielded bearings?. Your engine MMW ''CL0820-17-11T 'Dark Edition' how is the battery life of this engine? Do you know where to find this in Europa?
+jonas hej Bearing are available on eBay. Battery life has not been shortened a noticeable amount. I am not sure about Europe availability.
Great quad bought two just get extra bearings and shafts & props first things to go if you have a bad crash
Great Video. Makes me want one now. Have you tried the camera setup from Traxxas?
Great review, thanks for sharing!!! I love the upgrades you did to the quad, looks extremely cool! :), I'm going to make the same changes.
Have you tried flying it with a different transmitter like the DX6 or 8, or do you like the stock transmitter. I am completely new to this and just got my Latrax Alias a few days ago. I have bad control of it right now even in the normal mode.
I have not. I wasn't aware that it was compatible with Spektrum TX's.
Nice video, JHawk. You covered a lot of the cool features of the Alias that many other videos skip over. Ziggabug Thanks! I will check them out. I'm trying to get into FPV now.
Have you had any problems with the motors burning out? I have heard that from a lot of other people. Just want to make sure before I buy one.
Where can I get the bearings from?
Great video BTW. Just got my Alias the other week and enjoying how it flies.
eBay. Just search "Alias bearings" or "latrax bearings" or similar.
Where can I purchase this and be able to get the camera for it as well?
I went to Ebay to the site you recommended for the shielded bearings and they were not on ebay. Can you recommend where I could purchase them? Thanks in advance for your help. Your review was great keep up the good work; Bill
+William DeRosa The bearings are 3x6x2mm. You can search eBay for "3x6x2mm shielded bearings" and find them OK.
Where did you get the upgraded motors? Can you post a link?
How can I get better radio range?and how far do you rate the range with the camera??
I Just Got My Alias months Ago But I Been Scared to Fly And Crash it Cause I Really Like it So What Do You Recommend to Get Out That Fear
The Alias is basically "crash-proof". Go fly it! Don't worry. It's easy to fly and it's hard to break. Go for it and have no worries!
Can you pick one up in-store or do you have to order online?
+Kris Stazel I ordered online. That's the easiest and fastest way to pick one up.
Yeah, I ended up getting one on Amazon. Should be here in less than a week.
Support your local hobby shop when possible! Or else there will be no more local hobby shops!!!
I´m thinking to getting this has my first drone and I´m also planning on placing a Sony AS100v action cam on it (90g) would you recommend this? or what other drone should I consider?
tattotoro I'm not sure, but I think you'll need a more robust drone for the AS100v to carry.
+jhawk1977 thanks!
+tattotoro To follow up on JHawk's comment: The Alias is capable of carrying lightweight keychain video camera's though. The Mobius Action Cam is one example. There are cheaper one's other than the Mobius, but as the old saying goes ... " You get what you pay for ".

+Kymarb2 The Dark Edition are more powerful. The Alias baseline replacement motors from Micro Motor Warehouse are still more powerful than stock Alias motors, so I'd advise against mixing and matching the MMW baseline motors with stock Alias motors.
Seems similar to the Ominus. Have you flown the Ominus by Dromeda?
John Riley I have not flown the Ominus. I know that the Ominus came out after the Alias though.
Do the Micro Motor Warehouse motors for Alias last any longer than the original Latrax Alias motors?
Charles Newman Yes.
I just looked it up and you are right they aren't compatible. Told you I am new :)
Why do there lose radio controll if the camera is installed I have lose 2 of them .it works fine with out the camera
Hello J, just wondering if you can comment on the range of a stock Alias
Mike A Not sure. It's not that big, so range, I believe is great, because once you lose sight, what's the point?
It can go pretty far but it is hard to see should do it at dawn so it's nice and light and a little dark
Trust me I did mine when the sun was shinning bad idea couldn't see it for a bit
Excellent video. Thanks!
thank you great vid!
EXCELLENT REVIEW ~
jhawk, what are the part # for the shielded bearings, and where is the best place to buy them ??
Rich Baker I snagged a set on eBay. Search for "Traxxas Alias Bearings".
Thanks, I have been doing a lot of home work on the Alias, I am expecting it to come in the mail tomorrow, I have been wanting one for a while now !!! Cant wait !!! How about a suggestion on a good tool kit ??
What do you think of this quad compared to the ominus?
Albert Aguirre I think the Ominus ripped off Latrax's design. I think the Ominus is cheaply made and is nowhere near as durable as the Latrax.
Also the latrax alias is way more customizable.
DO you really think the Alias is tougher?
Do you have an Alias?
Albert Aguirre i have handled both, and I can definitely say the Alias is more sturdy, although you aren't going to be breaking the Ominus with regular wear and tear
where can i buy one for $50? Can you please give me a link....i can only find for $150
Thats the camera i bought it at a sale for 100
what colour should I get
The brushed motors on the alias only last about 14 hours flight time each and replacement motors are $20 each and you have to buy a pack of 2. I suggest go ahead and spend the $300 for the Traxxas aton with brushless motors and have a blast for a long time only replace its batteries with a bias 5000 35c, because it doesn't swell as the Traxxas battery does
does it come with a camera and if not would it lift a key chain 808 camera do you think ?
A camera is NOT included, but one can be easily added. Yes it will lift an 808.
hey thanks for the quick reply ! ;)
Still have it ?
How long is the flight times???
thats cool i will buy it!!!
How do you recharge the battery with a USB adapter??
Tick Tock It's very common now. You plug the USB into a computer or a cell phone charger and charge the battery. Very simply.
jhawk1977 How many amps can it take?
The charger has a light on it, when the light goes out, the battery is fully charged.
What is top speed?
where did you get the bearings?
Boca Bearings
What's the typical flight time
8 -10 Minutes
How long can you fly on a single charge?
Depends. Flying nice and smooth, 12 minutes. Flying aero/acrobatics, about 8 minutes.
How long to charge?
Brandon Crary 45 minutes to an hour.
With the new Lectern Pro 700mAh I can get up to 16 minutes.
Whats the flight time?
+Alan Hanks 8-10 minutes.
Had three Motors go out less than a month
100th like
15 minuten
