  • @alf699
    @alf699 8 месяцев назад +2

    We have now taken our October build 2023/MY24 EV6 AWD GT-Line for a drive to the next larger coastal town. It was charged to 100% using a AC 7KW charger. The car gave us a range of 440km before leaving and the distance per leg was about 150km at 110km/hr on the Highway. Temperature outside was 25C-27C Celsius with internal temperature set to 23C and nothing above 50m sea level. The car started at about 25KW/100km usage but kept dropping usage calculation while driving (must be a default starting position). By the time we had done the entire trip it averaged about 19KW/100km. At about 70+% total trip distance, we still had 58% charge left in the battery but pulled in at a fast charger, just to learn how to use them. We had the DC charging set to 80% and it took less then 10 minutes to re-charge to 80%. Top charge rate was 233.46KW and it settled to around 130KW before finishing. So now we know that the car can do that full round trip including driving a bit around town more then comfortable and that we get a rock bottom range of 350+km range, no matter the condition.
    I did a fair bit of research before the purchase and the car has more then lived up to realistic expectations.

      I have heard him say that the seats in the ev6 are quite good. A bit firmer than a tesla, but still not so firm he got butt hurt from it. However you would still have to test it for yourself. I find seating to be very similair to driving the car itself; some people say its a perfect car, but when you get behind the wheel you cant find the right seating position and the steering feels unresponsive. He could give a decent description of how the seat feels to him, but since were all so different it might not apply to you. 10 hours of comfort for him could be 4 hours of comfort to you, followed by 6 hours of a butt that hurts, and an aching back. I think thats why he focuses so much on stats rather than the feel of the car.

Kia/Hyundai describe Winter Mode as "This mode is recommended to improve driving and DC charging performances during winter by raising the battery temperature to an adequate level. However, the driving distance may be reduced as the energy is required to increase battery temperature. Also, if the battery temperature is low during driving or when scheduled air conditioner/heater is activated, this mode is operated to improve driving performance. However, the mode is not operated to ensure driving distance when the battery level is low." It is enabled in the EV Settings menu.

      @@bernhardleopold6702 Look at the difference in temperatures. EV6 was almost as fast, despite being 14 degrees colder. And it seems the heatpump is not great in the EV6 - just before the freeze, a Polish redaction did a highway range test. They got 360 km where Bjorn only achieved 275. The only difference being the temperatures (and an RWD car, but the front engine is electromagnetic, so shouldn't be any different). A lot of people got to test the car in September/October - none of them reported rapidgating, it was always consistent 240 kW from the start. There's definitely enough room for the EV6 to take the win (unless the EQS swoops in for the kill, but it's a bit of a different class).
      Model Y is superior in terms of efficiency, no doubt. But it might not be enough to survive the Korean attack.

I live in northern Sweden and our charging network is still kinda of lagging behind so unfortunately this car doesn't have the range I (and many others) need for towing boxy trailers in winter. Ideal winter range while towing would be around 200-250 km. That should equal around 500 km real world range. These cars seems to be around 280 km real world range at 100 km/h assuming 5 % battery degradation. Probably a bit over 300 km at 90 km/h.

    • @celeron55
      @celeron55 2 года назад +4

      You need to keep in mind sensor locations have a massive effect on the recorded temperature spread. Sensors may simply not be placed at locations that show the most extreme temperatures. In heavy use for a battery with a coolant loop you'll get the lowest temperature near the coolant channels and the highest temperature furthest from the coolant channels, and heat travels through the battery cells kind of slowly. Well anyway, what I'm saying is this information is completely insufficient to actually tell who cools their battery best.

    • @EV_OBD
      @EV_OBD 2 года назад

      Car Scanner shows 16 temperature sensors in EV6/Ioniq 5 battery and delta is only 2-3°C indeed, no big differences even at CCS. Battery Max temperature sensor probably shows some other point in the battery pack which is important for the cooling/heating strategy.

    Excellent. I've got the Ioniq 5 now, and chose it mostly for the interior space and more open design. But I do wish they'd made it more efficient (aerodynamics) and included a bigger battery like Kia.
    Still happy so far, and looking forward to my first long trip in December. Will ride Ionity all the way from Holland to Switzerland, and see how it does... I think the charging breaks will be too short for me an my son to both go to the loo...

    You mention the vast number of variables at play over a 1000 km trip, so here's another one for when you compare a vehicle to itself or another similar (Kia vs Hyundai, for example): the software build and date. The Ioniq you tested in Spring and then again in Summer, did it have the same software build on each test? And the EV6 to Ioniq 5, did it have a software build date newer than the vehicle you're comparing it to, the Ioniq 5 from July and April? Not sure if these elements can be a factor, but I do know you've been suggesting that software fixes can help to solve some problems you've described. Perhaps there've been updates to correct?

    My theory is that the heat pump can either only transfer heat from the battery into the cabin or outside, but not both. Since the temperature in the cabin is kept at a constant 21(?) the amount of heat it can draw out of the battery is limited. So if you for example opened the windows slightly and turned the heater to maximum it would actually cool the battery

    • @Bud_Terence
      @Bud_Terence 2 года назад +5

      Thats the ancient way of cooling fossils that overheat, but worth a try. :)))

    • @KevinT3141
      @KevinT3141 2 года назад +1

      Yeah, I'm sure this is where Tesla's much lauded octovalve comes into play. A single heat pump will only heat (or cool) one thing, but you can proportion traditional coolant around in all sorts of loops with a clever enough valve arrangement.

      So, KIA BMS might be based on human intervention:
      1. To prevent battery overheating increse temp inside
      2. To prevent coldgating stop hvac
      Seems to me like poor implementstion of the heat pump. I wish someone tested version without heat pump.

    • @antimatter4733
      @antimatter4733 2 года назад

      @@Old-Bald-and-Grumpy I mean in normal use this isn't really an issue, we're talking 5 minutes under the worst conditions. Not really something anyone should be basing their decision off, more important things like reliability, comfort and space. This only is really an issue in very cold places during long journeys anyway and like I said, 5 minutes

    • @Old-Bald-and-Grumpy

      @@antimatter4733 Well, yes - and maybe in hot places where battery overheating might be an issue.
      Generally speaking anything other than European April/May and September/October 😉
      As I live in country with relatively poor infrastructure when it comes to chargers, especially fast chargers > 150 kWh, Kia's fast charging does not make up for lowish efficiency at highway speeds .
      At the same time rapidgating hardly applies here. ;)

    From watching TB's videos, I've become very interested in the Korean EVs. It seems that the current gap is the BMS. TB has to actively manage the battery temperature. If the car did a better job of this, the car would be a monster road tripper. Does anyone know what the Hyundai/Kia BMS road trip looks like?

    I would not deduct time for the charging handshake problems. It is a car/charger problem we is going to meet irl. with this particular car. This is one of the advantages for a Tesla. They is quick to start charging, but might be limited to maximum charging speed at the charger (150KW).

    In the test EV6 I have driven I found that I had to keep turning/moving the wheel (with my hands constantly on it) more than I wanted when the car was on “autopilot”. Can the sensitivity be adjusted? In our Opel the sensitivity is perfect when I have my hands on the wheel and it registers my small movements just fine. We are getting one next week.

      Same with the EV6 i tested. I asked the sales person about it and he said it could be turned off, and nothing about adjusting it. So i just assume it's not possible to adjust as is. But they had asked Kia about the issue, because there were more people pointing it out, but no answer yet. Was very annoying when driving.

    I’ve been looking a lot of your review videos and found them really helpful! We are a Dutch / Austrian family who make a lot of long trips and traveled several times through mid norway.
    I have ev6 awd in order with a lot of delay and I started looking at other options and drove the ix3 which was a lot of fun.
    While the ev6 has the highest specs I’m starting to doubt if this should be the main focus or that I should include driving experience and interior a bit more. In every review I hear or read, I notice that the specs are not making that much difference compared to the competition and driving and interior are somewhat disappointing.
    I’m currently driving an Audi A4 and love the German brands. And I really dislike Tesla quality.
    The doubt is about the ix3, i4 or a second hand etron 55. What would you recommend? Just wait or switch German and take range and charging a little bit less serious.
    A short answer would be sufficient and great, thank you.
    Keep making your videos.

    As you recalculated the time and deducted the extra time for the detour you would have had to deduct also the extra km driven on that detour and only count the range the closed highway had. (Since that was the time you also calculated with.) So shouldn´t it have been a few more km and minutes before the "real" 1000km?

    • @bjornnyland
