If this song was written in the 1800's it would be lovely and popular. That is what is so classic about Stephin's writing. He seems to produce standards-not just songs.
I would like to thank Stephen Merritt for keeping music alive, because he and TMFs have been one of the most original things in it. What TMFs can do with three minutes and less than fifty words is generally worth an entire album by someone else; and every album, whether it's acoustic or synthesized, is a perfect, unique, distinct little jewel.
I first heard this song when It was covered by 'The Divine Comedy' before the days of youtube. Learned to play it on my guitar because its such a pretty song, but never thought more of it than an obscure b-side. Three weeks ago I google it for the first time and discover 'The Magnetic Fields' my mind is blown, all the music I've loved in the past feel feels like mild infatuation compared to this band. Poetry that touches the mind, melodies that touch and enrich the soul, and make you feel like a better person because of them. Sounds meladramatic I know but It's the truth. Thank you Stephen Merritt and all 'The Magnetic Fields' musicians, sorry it took me so long to discover you:)
It's hard to tell who is more of a depressed musician: Stephin Merritt or Bob Mould. Good thing they did a song together: ruclips.net/video/eeh4nRpzRBo/видео.html Have a good day!
Ilsa Jule was the perfect singer for the magnetic fields. Androgynous but boyish, she brought a simplicity and innocence to the themes of sexuality, gender and love on which Stephin Meritt tends to focus in his music without seeming patronising or over simplistic. There's a soulful sort of shyness to her that reminds me of Morrissey in his early career. She turns lyrics that could sound silly or juvenile into beauty; she conveys perfectly the deep emotion behind them in a way that even Stephen Meritt sometimes cannot do and I think it would have been brilliant if she had had a go at more of their songs.
So this is Merritt's idea of his dreamed sexiest alter-ego? Ilsie's androgynous but boyish (that feminine underlayer) features _that in this music video goes unashamedly wide open to tease with in full drag/lipsynch? Not sure if chosen because she is like a young Thomas Dolby and Adam Ant sister version, of what Merritt may deem worthier looks than his to match theirs? Kind of playing Cyrano to Ilse's as his "front man", there's so much deeply Romantic in this French flavored farce_ade All of it goes like a glove into this elegant Russian dolls layers video with such subtleties, to evoque also such nostalgic/longing air with these waltzy strokes that lays at the core of such beautifully sad and daunting song
Moons in June I've given up on that stuff Arms have charms but I've no hope of falling in love The rest of life pales in significance I'm looking for somebody with whom to dance With whom to dance? With whom to dance? I'm looking for somebody with whom to dance. Rings and strings What use have I for these things? Bells and carousels I'd just be fooling myself. And you You look like heaven An angel who stepped from a dream 777 times lovelier than anything I've ever seen.

Amazing. Their show at the Kessler Theater in Dallas, March 2023, was as perfect as ever.
its one of the most beautiful things ive ever seen and heard
This is the song that both introduced me to and made me fall in love with The Magnetic Fields. Love the way he twists the cliches into heartbreak.

Exactly. You can just hear that every single lyrics and every single note were carefully thought about
I got this album a couple months ago and love it a lot. This song is a favourite now. "Moons in June, I've given up on the stuff", love it.
Everything about this is perfect
I would like to take this moment to thank Stephen Merritt for helping me to not commit suicide.
We need a video of us getting drunk
Yea. Seriously. Fucking seriously.
Awesome yet ironic because this song just killed me
I being honest I think mf is the gayest band I have heard but it's better than modern pop

Who is this man? I found him Ilsa Jule !!

There is only one with whom I shall dance with again.
Very good song like it
Yet another Merritt standard that seems, at first, like a slight and witty thing, but has fathomless depth.
A lovely evocation of the multilemma that is finding your sexuality.
Could be just me but he looks like Dale Cooper in this.
He??
That's not a man, it's Ilsa jule
