    Hey Dom, I've watched you alot on The Repair Shop. Unlike The Repair Shop this video actually showed how the repair was done. I'm a VW fan and I've just bought a T2 VW camper. I'm going to first rebuild the engine & gearbox. Thank you for showing the mistake with the shims, that was so informitive and I will make sure to take my time and do the rebuild correctly.
    Oh by the way, I'm an expat from the UK and now reside in Manitoba, Canada. Thanks again Dom, hope you have alot of fun driving your VW van.

    Mission creep is all too familiar. I picked up an MGB GT that had sat in a garage for 34 years. After going through the necessary steps to assess the condition of the engine, the engine and gearbox had to come out to fix the clutch. Besides all of the new gaskets, seals, hoses, etc. that got replaced, maybe I’ll paint the engine while it’s out which led to cleaning and painting the engine bay, which led to removing the heater box and refurbishing that while access was good. Then it needed another gear so in goes an overdrive gearbox. The good news is it’s running and driving great and so is your bus. Now, get on that 356 and do the same for it. Can’t wait. Well done Dom and Honest John!

  • @paulg3336
    @paulg3336 2 года назад +5

    The alignment tool is purely to align things during assembly so you can get the input shaft of the gearbox through the clutch plate into the pilot bearing when you offer up the gearbox to be bolted back on. If the clutch plate and pilot bearing are not initially aligned , the gearbox input shaft will not be able to go in.
    It has nothing to do with "rattles" when the engine is running. Once the assembly is bolted up , the first time the clutch is disengaged everything automatically aligns because the clutch plate floats freely on the gearbox shaft.

    Pulling the engine on these old buses is SO easy. I used to pull the engine out of my '71 because it was easier to change spark plugs that way. I eventually got the whole extraction down to about 45 minutes! Postscript: That guy John REALLY knows his shit when it comes to aircooled VWs. I've dropped engines / subframes out on gravel driveways too ... the trick is to put a sheet of ply down first ! You can buy cheap ply from joinery places, as it is often used to pack around the better quality Laminate sheets they buy, the local Joiner sells the ply 'packing sheets' for a packet of choccy biscuits per sheet ;)

    Hi Dom, The usual reason for a staked flywheel bearing is the case is worn & needs thrust cutting & probably a linebore. I've seen this loads of times over many years of building & rebuilding these engines. Dont trust the endfloat readings, some of this will be the bearing in the case. bearing seizure is quite common with todays aftermarket bearing kits, being made of inferior materials to the originals.

    Dear Dominic Chinea.
    Please kindly allow me to ask: Maybe I missed it but I really hope, that you didn't forget to install the very important rubber seal/lip in the engine compartment (so to say around the engine). Without it, there is no proper cooling air flow and the engine will overheat usually.
    2) 👍👌👏 I'm really glad that you changed the wheels to the original look. By the way: Why is the old bus sitting so ridiculously low on the street? Is there any damping respectively functioning suspension left?
    3) The bus is looking so much better with original blue bumpers. Congrats. After the black paint on the roof is eliminated, it will be even better.
    Best regards, luck, health and wisdom.
