@@GaryExplains Gary these figures seem stupid to you because you've been a smartphone enthusiasts for so long. You have a bias. I remember those very same Apps you talked about, and they were just as rich back in 2014 as they are in >2018. However, back in that period LTE wasn't as cheap, as large coverage, as generous with data. And screens looked great, albeit at 1080p and 720p resolutions. And the phone's internal memory and storage were smaller. These constraints meant Apps were more LEAN. They had to be. The very same Apps you showed which were eating 300-400MB just by sitting in idle, back in that 32-bit era was only using ~100MB. Now, it's not a question, things have become more bloated. And users have very little control over Apps (unless r00t), so it becomes a necessity to have a 8GB RAM phone. So that's where your biases show, Apps are bloated, we don't need more RAM. I feel like by 2025 devices are going to get faster, so Apps are going to be built to require more speed, and larger resolutions (4K HDR?), and data speeds will get even faster and plentiful with 5G, so naturally RAM will have to go up. Laptops and Desktops have been at the 16GB-32GB limit for a while know. I see them going to the 64GB range in a few years. Whilst I see phones within 3-6 years hitting 16GB as the norm. One of the reasons for your dissatisfaction seems to be Google, who's one of the perpetrators when it comes to inefficient software. Quite the contrary when looking at the iOS Devices, and the mandatory Quality Control limitations which that curated ecosystem imposes.

The case for 8GB and more is to use it in desktop mode. Hence why Samsung is going with 8 & 12GB on the Galaxy Note 10. DeX is increasingly taking over my use of PC, as it runs full Linux, GIMP, MS Office, and video editing. And once I'm done, I just unplug and boom it's in my pocket. @@GaryExplains 12 GB in 2019 is the stratosphere now for Android. Imagine if iOS on the 10s Max had 12 Gigabytes of RAM right now in 2019, triple what it has now. Apple would slaughter the market and charging 1449 for the phone is worth it now.
"If you have 1GB of ram, you could load 3 apps each taking 300MBs" -- You couldn't be more wrong. Typically android itself will take more than 400MBs + app components that are running in-zhe background approx 200MB, so you'd have only 400MB for userspace applications at boot complete event, further more memory will be hogged as apps process the boot complete intent. in approximately 20minutes as you use apps, ram will be almost full(cache + code + data) and swapping will reach around 500MB assuming 1GB ZRAM buffer. Devices with 4/6/8GB RAM come with larger screen sizes proportional to RAM so screen buffers are large for them. My device with 2GB RAM can only provide around 640MB of RAM to a single process without crashing, that's around 31% of RAM available for a foreground user process. For 4GB device that would be around 40-60% and for 8GB(RAM) that "should" be around 70% available for single process.(larger 4K screen buffers) I'd argue that if you wish to use your phone for more than 3 years, and are not as rich as this guy, may be you should consider device with 8 or even 10GB of RAM so that it can survive Google's _"kill older android devices"_ campaign.
Absolutely right. Back then i had 1 gb of ram in my Android phone in 2016. It used to run at least 6 apps. Now I have 4gb of ram in my mobile it also runs the same 6 apps. And who knows when it will become outdated. Fb in my older device used to take just 120 mb, now it takes around 600 mb. Google really sucks with app updates. In nutshell 8 gb of ram will make u future proof untill 2022 and 12 gb untill 2026! Peace!
@@Settowin care to explain? Interesting video. I have 4gb of RAM on my Nokia 7 Plus and haven't ever found it to be a problem. I don't really see why people need to be holding so many apps in memory -- is restarting an app such a big deal? I'm not quite sure how useful this sort of multi tasking is on a mobile OS...Generally, if you're using a weather app or twitter or whatever, you're refreshing to get new data each time you look at it anyway. Besides, If I want to do any real productivity work or gaming i'll just switch to my Desktop PC which is much more powerful and better suited for it.
I agree, I hardly ever go back to an app in memory wanting it specifically to be where I left it, and your right, any thing like image or video editing or high end gaming I leave for the pc which is much better suited for such things.
I too have Nokia 7 plus. 4 GB is pretty much an ocean of memory for a phone (especially with pure android). It's also possible in the settings to specify the important apps which should stay in memory.
Try keeping PUBG , Chrome with multiple tabs open , GMail , Insta , FB , Whatsapp, JioSaavn open at the same time. This is some people's normal usage. This maybe added with 2-3 more apps like WPS office, Maps etc. 4GB can't handle all of it. If you are not that of a heavy user then don't blame others for wanting heavy RAM.
@Gary I have a doubt..They say sometimes killing off the app doesn't save the battery but reduces the sot because the app has to load again which takes up more battery juice..But if it's in background memory it merely uses any battery.. So that brings me to my doubt..Let's say a user who uses many apps has a 6gb and 8gb ram phones.. Wouldn't the 8 gb ram phone have better Battery life because lesser apps need reloading and all? Forgive if it's a stupid doubt.. By the way when's redmi k20 pro's speedtest g coming?
Well, OnePlus 10GB side loads apps, not only holds apps open. 10GB is ridiculous but with it's AI learning what app you use the most allows it to side loads your most frequently used apps and launching them is faster. So I use 10 GB to never have app crashes and consistently keep my apps open. I work in an environment where every second counts so I'm glad this is a phone I can consistently count on to keep my productivity at 100%

Very informative. I just upgraded from 4 GB to 8 GB. Huge difference. I kept my midranger for a year and half but I'll keep my 1+6T for 3+ years so it's nice to have that longevity.
8GB RAM does sound like a lot at first glance (and it may indeed be for the average user), but it really all depends on what kinds of apps you're running on your mobile device. Running a large neural net simulator needs a LOT of RAM. Or try running an app that simulates a 32-qubit quantum computer on your device... You're gonna need in excess of 8GB just for that alone
I have been using android from past 11 years. Started with 512 mb. With my experience, 6 gb is more than enough but you get around 90% performance. With 8 gb, I have never seen any gitter or lag. With time, when our usage increases, our OS tend to work more on ram. So eventually we need more ram, if we need our device healthy for a longer period of time. For me if you plan to use your mobile for 3 years, ie average android phone life, you need 8 gb or maybe 10. 12 gb is definitely bonkers, android is not created to run on this huge amount of ram. So its just waste of money.
I think you missed something that's very obvious. 1) Phones less than 6gb ram is memory managed by android to keep about 50% of memory free. 2) Looking at OnePlus 6T, one can deduce that android needs about 4gb of memory to survive without swapping. If you've learnt anything about IT, you'll know that swapping really kills performance. I'm on a note 9 running a few memory intensive apps and my phone stutters all the time, because of swapping. From what I saw, android's memory management is poorly built, for days when devices had little memory and they attempted to load as much as they can. Because it has to cater to the poor man's device with 1gb of memory, it treats all devices equally. It tries to keep as much free memory as it can. I'll leave you with a thought: Android keeps about 50% free memory, it uses about 3.6gb of memory. Hence, for a phone with 8gb of memory, you can only use about 0.4gb before your phone starts to swap. Hence if you need a speedy phone, you should use the formula to calculate the amount of free memory you have = (Total memory / 2) - 4gb hence with a 10gb phone, you have only 2gb of ram free before your phone starts swapping starts.
Higher ram can support phones with monster storage for eg. If you have a S10 plus you can rock 2TB of storage(additional 1TB with a SD card) and 12 Gb of ram got you covered. At this point it can replace computers and laptops for most of the people.
no for me phone will never replace my desktop i have 1gb phone and its enough to run facebook and youtube. i use my pc for gamming i have 16gb ram in pc and i use it for vedio editing gaming etc.
@@wajahatwow1232 I agree with you but as the ram are increasing I'm pretty sure we'll see a 16gb ram next year on phones but the thing is that operating system like windows are powerful than Android or iOS but still phones are powerful enough for replacing desktop or laptop for many people but not all but if smartphone manufacturers are able to make powerful processors like amd or Intel, phones would be able to replace desktop and laptops for nearly everyone but still considering that many people do not use laptops for gaming and can easily find a powerful smartphone to fulfill all their needs as of now.

I haven't had a single time yet that I've found the 2gigs in my S5 just wasn't enough RAM. Need is a strong word. My educated guess would be more like 1.5Gb needed, 3-4Gb wanted. Windows 10 needs 2Gb but Android now needs 4? Come on....
arkansawdave1974 Well yes, high RAM usage in Android makes sense, in a way. What i mean is that instead of optimizing memory management of the OS, as iOS i.e, developers just add more ram to ignore the issue
Windows 10 needs 8Gb ram. 4gb is entirely dedicated to the OS. Any less and every game and app will be pagefiled with lag and stutter and long load times.
what i learn for my computer for years. is that. more ram basically more responsive more fluid to the operating system itself. you can argue with me but my eyes cant be fooled. when your phone still fresh it has no problem but after couple months. with update from manufacturer and android. your phone will be slower. its because they messed up with ram management. lets imagine a room. which easier to manage, bigger room or smaller room. ofc you can be smart and manage all your stuff accordingly, but bigger room always better to accomodate new things and you(the processor) doesnt need to work harder to put something anyway for me more is better.
apps getting heavy after update ... than update and update ... so smart .... forcing consumer tu buy new handset every year ... 4 ram not enough now ..... also need more storage ... scam 😒
I just set a budget for phone. If I can get 8Gb of ram with that price, I'll take it... If it's only 6Gb, I'll still take it... even if 4Gb is cheaper, I'll still take the one on par with my budget... because technology is a mystery for me. XD
Thank you, I never realized that having tabs in chrome was what's choking my device (I couldn't figure out why even after deleting apps it was still choking...)
Yep. Though it only uses more power while the ram is in use. So if you have 32 gb of ram, and 31 are unused at the moment, then you won't be using any more power. In theory anyway, as ram stores information temporarily using an electric charge.
@@C3lloman Thanks for cracking that mystery for us Sherlock 😁. That's correct though. Of course it technically takes some. It's an extremely small amount though. I mean extremely small! A running phone can idle for hours without even using 1% of it's battery. (Unless you have a background service running amok) and that's what everything else AND the RAM running. Maybe when we're talking terabytes of ram this might become a measurable concern but it's nothing now. Also yes, it can actually disable unused RAM. To an extent. RAM is found in strips of multiple chips. All but one can be disabled for battery savings, that again, weren't even enough to be a concern even with all of them running.
3GB RAM on my G6. The constant app killing is severely annoying. I'm not some giant power user, and I don't play mobile games (unless you count Solitaire or Sudoku and the like). When I open Pandora, pause it for a 30s phone call and I have to reopen it and miss a good song, it's's pretty freaking annoying. When I go to Chrome then to Photos then back to Chrome only for it to reopen the whole program, it's slow and annoying. Don't get 3 or even 4 GB of RAM in 2019 unless you Know it's enough.
3/4 gb is sufficient for me I don't play heavy games on smartphones and I don't rarely use a browser. What I care the more about my smartphone is the size of the sd card supported
The problem isn't RAM or having "too much" of it. The real issue is that Android kills apps almost immediately after you use them, so RAM is almost never taken advantage of. If we had the option to "never snooze, never suspend, always keep app open in the background" then the more RAM you have the faster and smoother your phone will feel and apps can be switched to with zero delay. This would take a hit on your battery - but I think some might be fine with that trade-off.
It's a balance of resources. RAM costs money. Optimization costs money. At some point, optimization costs more than just adding more RAM. Google clearly played these cards better than all the others considering they are now leading and have the most powerful mobile OS in the world.
People who think we don't need high ram similar to laptop should understand the level of travel most people do these days. During travel, one's phone is expected to do 95% of the things a laptop does. So, a good phone with a good ram and memory is a must these days.
I started from 1 gb . Then upgraded to 3gb . AND NOW USING OP7 8GB . I CAN PLAY PUBG ON HDR EXTREME GRAPICS WHICH I COULD NOT DO ON MY PREVIOUS DEVICE. 😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍
Another advantage of having more ram for future proofing if you are not a gamer or extreme user would really just be having a really future proof smartphone. The apps nowadays really uses some big files requiring space of Abt 64gb or even 128 GB as minimum to have more space in your smartphone. Then having more RAM is better for future proofing in order to just ensure yourself you are not going to have lag issues in the coming years since apps by then will need more RAM when being used. For example, you can't load Facebook on 1g or 2g RAM nowadays. You can download it but it gets lag really easily, requiring space and RAM management. You'll only be able to download and use Facebook lite compared to Facebook app a few years back. Next is the battery, since there are a lot of updates happening, battery life can deplete much faster due to the higher demand of RAM usage and apps being updated requiring more power consumption on your battery. Hence making your battery on more effort. For example, when users of early versions of iPhones updated there Smartphones, there battery more likely got depleted. Well of course it could always be a software issue to keep up to date or a tactic for them to change and get the latest phones.. Either way, it will happen more likely overtime since battery life expectancy will really much drain thru time. Unless you don't update every now and then. Trying to use less internet and still use your phone on just offline or minimal web usage unless your app can't run and requires you to update it then that's the time you'll see that your smartphone can't keep up to date. I forgot which battery does have longer life, if it's the Li ion? Anyways, thru nowadays having fast, quick, dash, and even warp charge. Yeah, as you constantly heat up and charge your battery, it would eventually decrease its battery life thru time and since battery nowadays are built in and would really just be hard to even try and replace it, would really require you to buy the latest smartphones or atleast just in order to be up to date. Flagships however would just really be to be up to date now and really become another waste once another newer up to date flagship gets released. If you got the money, then you would likely buy and dispose the recently new now old smartphone you just bought in order to get the latest of the bunch.. unless you do keep it somewhere, tech reviewer or happens to be a collector of some sort which also makes it if you have some sentimental value over it. :) Anyhow.. future proofing in a smartphone isn't exactly that of necessary since it isn't like a desktop PC where you could always upgrade it and make it your own and let it remain the same. Video Graphics card, RAM, Storage Drive would always be readily easier to change and be upgraded to keep up with the latest. Unlike Consoles, Ultrabooks, Laptops and even Smartphones, which would only really last for a few amount of years.. since only time would make them unusable due to the fact that certain games, apps , programs would require them to use the "LATEST REQUIREMENTS" of needed specs in order to still be up to date. The internet is really growing so does the need for an upgrade every now and then. Future proofing is one thing to take in consideration, but eventually, it still wouldn't be able to keep up maybe Abt 3-5 years or more if that is what you want when always being online and up to date with the net. But of your that person who would just use minimal net and always be an offline user. Then your phone would really be store in good condition for Abt 5-10years or so. Esp if you play offline games call or text. Since the internet would not recommend you to update to be able to "USE" the latest version. I know a few people who only use call and txt in there old phones since year 1990's and even 2000's and still get thru everyday. Of course, it's just going to be there call, txt, document storage, and even picture storage depending if there phone have it since all these are offline. Also depends really on where you use it on your everyday basis. A really good example was the Nokia 3210 since all it does is few games, make some ring tones, call and text. :) Some use it for safety purposes. Another is my old LG phone which I can now only use it for call and txt, then my old Meizu phone which I could not use anymore for IG after updating, Messenger, and even now with FB which it always get lag.. even with Aviary(photo editing app) could not use it when I accidentally updated it.. becomes really lag. Then from my mistake, deleted and downloaded it then says, it can't be uploaded since it is not available my smartphones OS and need to have the latest one which my smartphone can't have anymore. So ending it up and just use it for vids, a few pics, storage since I put some ext storage before and call and text. Hahhaha, yeah I know this is too long, regardless.. that's another why you would want to try to future proof your phone. But since they aren't upgradable it would still only last a few more months or years for it to be useable. :) Thanks for reading!
The real benefit to more than enogh ram is more cache. Means less storage access; less write wear. Ideal amount would be at least enough to store all of your regular use apps and all daily or more often random accessed data on a single chip.

"No body will ever need more that 8GB in 2019" - Gary Sims
That's a false quote. Bill Gates did not use the words "ever" or "never". He was merely talking about the memory situation at the time.
“The growth of the Internet will slow drastically, as the flaw in ‘Metcalfe’s law’ becomes apparent: most people have nothing to say to each other! By 2005, it will become clear that the Internet’s impact on the economy has been no greater than the fax machine’s” -Economist Paul Krugman, 1998
Bill Gates: "I've said some stupid things and some wrong things, but not that. No one involved in computers would ever say that a certain amount of memory is enough for all time."
Typically android itself will take more than 400MBs + app components that are running in-zhe background approx 200MB, so you'd have only 400MB for userspace applications at boot complete event,
further more memory will be hogged as apps process the boot complete intent.
in approximately 20minutes as you use apps, ram will be almost full(cache + code + data) and swapping will reach around 500MB assuming 1GB ZRAM buffer.
Devices with 4/6/8GB RAM come with larger screen sizes proportional to RAM so screen buffers are large for them.
My device with 2GB RAM can only provide around 640MB of RAM to a single process without crashing, that's around 31% of RAM available for a foreground user process.
For 4GB device that would be around 40-60% and for 8GB(RAM) that "should" be around 70% available for single process.(larger 4K screen buffers)
I'd argue that if you wish to use your phone for more than 3 years, and are not as rich as this guy, may be you should consider device with 8 or even 10GB of RAM so that it can survive Google's _"kill older android devices"_ campaign.
Wrong.
Android has always been focused on running multiple processess at once, in doing so, it falls behind windows10, which can allocate as much as 95% of it's RAM to a single non-Root userland process. That's 31% for Android, maybe slightly better for newer phones. That doesn't make it any better.

Restarting apps drains the battery, especially apps you use often. So apps in the background means better battery life. So stop closing your apps lol
I too have Nokia 7 plus. 4 GB is pretty much an ocean of memory for a phone (especially with pure android).
It's also possible in the settings to specify the important apps which should stay in memory.
If you had a phone with 6 it 8gb of ram in you'd probably change your tune. Unless you don't mind waiting for apps to load
You can't run 4 300mb apps on 1gb. You did not at all account for system memory allocation along with any services it needs as well
SyCoREAPER he explains its 1gb of “Free” RAM, so that excludes the OS. Plus with compression you 100% can run 4 300mb app’s on 1gb of free RAM
@Gary
I have a doubt..They say sometimes killing off the app doesn't save the battery but reduces the sot because the app has to load again which takes up more battery juice..But if it's in background memory it merely uses any battery..
Please do a video explaining the correlation between RAM size and battery usage. Thanks Gary.

4GB is enough for stock Android, 6GB preferred.
6GB for Android OEM Skins, 8GB preferred.
You can run stock Android fine with 2 GB (with apps reloading). And with 4 GB plenty of multitasking.
Hence if you need a speedy phone, you should use the formula to calculate the amount of free memory you have = (Total memory / 2) - 4gb
hence with a 10gb phone, you have only 2gb of ram free before your phone starts swapping starts.
My current phone has three gigs, but I've had it for three years. Will go for at least six gigs next
Well Samsung DEX is a good reason for more ram on board. I find it useful.
Its not really useful when its only using about 4-6gb. They make u think u need more. Makes u pay more.
As big as the OEM bloatware it came up with. End of story.

P.S: I'm not bragging about buying those phones (the fact is I've been saving up for some time to buy one for a few months so I don't want to mess it up), I'm just genuinely confused. Thanks!
Any less and every game and app will be pagefiled with lag and stutter and long load times.
what i learn for my computer for years. is that. more ram basically more responsive more fluid to the operating system itself. you can argue with me but my eyes cant be fooled. when your phone still fresh it has no problem but after couple months. with update from manufacturer and android. your phone will be slower. its because they messed up with ram management. lets imagine a room. which easier to manage, bigger room or smaller room. ofc you can be smart and manage all your stuff accordingly, but bigger room always better to accomodate new things and you(the processor) doesnt need to work harder to put something
anyway for me more is better.
You are a gem Gary!! Such a terrific explanation and also the choice of topic is great too. I have become a fan of yours today.
apps getting heavy after update ... than update and update ... so smart .... forcing consumer tu buy new handset every year ... 4 ram not enough now ..... also need more storage ... scam 😒
Well we can say they're *smart*
Yeah, that's why I brought the 1+6T. Got it for cheap and won't have to work about performance for several years.
I just set a budget for phone. If I can get 8Gb of ram with that price, I'll take it... If it's only 6Gb, I'll still take it...
even if 4Gb is cheaper, I'll still take the one on par with my budget... because technology is a mystery for me. XD

Having more RAM can be a disadvantage as well since it consume more of your phone battery. It might be a small amount but it's there.
Yep. Though it only uses more power while the ram is in use. So if you have 32 gb of ram, and 31 are unused at the moment, then you won't be using any more power. In theory anyway, as ram stores information temporarily using an electric charge.
@@benjmiester Even unused RAM uses power, it's not like the unused RAM is magically switched off from receiving a voltage.
I never knew this. This is genuinely informational. Thanks broskie.
Thanks 👌🏻

It is.

How much optimisation you need in 2019
You dont need more than 4 gig in a phone seriously its just android optimisation
It's a balance of resources. RAM costs money. Optimization costs money. At some point, optimization costs more than just adding more RAM. Google clearly played these cards better than all the others considering they are now leading and have the most powerful mobile OS in the world.
Android is hoooooorrrriiible with optimisations
@@dsp4392 what you meant by powerfull there?🤔
People who think we don't need high ram similar to laptop should understand the level of travel most people do these days.
😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍
Rooted phone >>> Magisk Manager
Isn't magisk root?
Yes it is. You have 3 options:
1. Magisk
2. LosSU
3. SuperSU (not recomended because it's outdated)
used magisk. Don't know about los su. Magisk kinda sucks though many app detects root even with magisk hide.
I realised the pixel in the background is rooted
@@abdullahalfahad3732 Never had any problems, did you change 'hide from app' in settings?
Gary, I follow your Gary Explains channel as well. I wasn't aware that you were with AA as well! This is awesome!
Anyhow.. future proofing in a smartphone isn't exactly that of necessary since it isn't like a desktop PC where you could always upgrade it and make it your own and let it remain the same.
Some use it for safety purposes.
Still rocking the 1 gb ram on Iphone 6 plus lol. Not even planning to spend $1000 just for a phone
until apple decides to ninja nerf your performance
The real benefit to more than enogh ram is more cache. Means less storage access; less write wear. Ideal amount would be at least enough to store all of your regular use apps and all daily or more often random accessed data on a single chip.
Why is always the ram gone
