We need reporting on the predatory companies coming in and trying to buy the land in Lahaina from people who are still reeling from tragedy and may have been told their insurance is going to fight them to cover anything. Absolutely abominable. That is land important to native Hawaiians, who have now been left with nothing. It's not helping them--it's just big corporations that want to make it a bunch of resorts and force locals to into the abysmal downward spiral of our rental economy.

This is so upsetting and I do not even live there. Why are there no better warnings? So many lives lost for maybe no reason. My love and prayers to all of you.
Stop getting sucked in by the drama. The warnings never came because the systems were wiped out in a flash. The fact is 98% of people actually survived which is an amazing miracle. A significant percentage of structures and people were saved because the modern fire departments sprung into action, but nobody reports that.

My heart goes out to those who lost loved ones and those who lost their homes and businesses. My heart is so broken for all the families and people impacted by the devastation of this incredible fire. I have watched re-watched the news and do not understand how anyone could get in front of that fire to stop it. I live in Colorado near where the Marshall fire swept through and destroyed in entire town. It was the worst fire in Colorado history and pales in comparison to the Hawaiian fires. Is it possible for the military reserves to help?

School was cancelled for no reason and all the kids were home.
Government has offered 700$ to residents to help.
No response from emergency services.
FEMA was already in the area before.
Land developers have been trying to get this Land.

As a Colorado native, I can confirm those wildfires move fast. A lot faster than you'd think. It literally jumps from tree to tree, plus the sap burns like a road flare.

Feeling quite concerned, frustrated, and almost overwhelmed worrying about all of those who are incapable of protecting themselves, never mind worrying about anyone else. That's probably because we experienced all of that for ourselves not all that long ago. And it's now become quite apparent that we'll be back doing the exact same thing in our very near future.
RIP for all of those lost in the fires and for all of those who may yet remain, but will soon be lost in their very near future.

A friend from my youth was renting a home there that burned to the ground, lost his pickup, tools and lots of possessions. He was in Colorado but his daughter got out safe with his favorite guitar.

Stick frame structure fires with high winds don't have a chance. This was a terrible tragedy that will be a learning experience for rebuilding the town . The new structures will be more fire resistant but all the other towns will still be in the same vulnerable situation. How does the rest of the islands towns protect there towns? These sinerios are everywhere it's not an island problem. I live in NM and the forest service started a fire that got loose and burned out so many people's homes and destroyed so many lives. Your not safe anywhere.

The local authorities were helping the same day, opening shelters and fighting the fires they could actually stop. The federal aid took days because of the logistics. Hawaii is in the middle of nowhere, and Lahaina is remote even for Hawaiians. The airport only has a 3000 foot runway and operates in daylight only. No good for cargo planes.
@@josephastier7421 and you know this, how? Local authorities - local as in Maui - yes, 100% were there while their own lives were in danger. Local STATE government? No. Redcross? Arrived Sunday. FEMA? Were in Honolulu and a small amount were on Maui days after the fire. The BULK of everything from shelters to donations were Hawai’i pae’āina residents. WE loaded cargo planes. We loaded boats and sailed items where they needed to go. Do not devalue and dismiss the work that residents did because government failed to do so. Also, please don’t generalize “Hawaiians” - it’s a culturally ethnicity, not a general, “people of”.

Logistics be damned, if regular every-day people can come together to take care of feeding, clothing, and caring for others, the government and federally funded entities should be able to get it together in less than 4-5 days. Any support is critical but sure ODD that FEMA dragged its feet and practically had to be forced to respond to the disaster in East Palestine, Ohio ... AFTER 15 DAYS. But when disaster strikes a prime vacation spot, FEMA is there in droves, without hesitation, by the NEXT DAY.

I have watched this from Florida and I was not shocked at all about how this fire spread so fast. I am amazed at the lack of response/ leadership from the city and or government officials. How could they just not warn people? People had to survive a hurricane of fire. My heart breaks for all of those affected by this deadly event.

We need to stop the blame game for now. The fire was moving at a mile a minute, in total chaos. Too easy to be a monday morning quarterback on a disaster like this.

My understanding is the sirens are for tsunamis 🌊, not wildfires. So if people heard the sirens without knowing they would go inland towards the fire, instead of towards the ocean…

I don’t know about Hawaii, but here in the South and Midwest a siren just means there’s an emergency and you should check local media. Usually it’s a tornado, but not always. I’d assume it’s similar for Hawaii, or it at least should be. Unless, of course, those are sirens specifically for tsunamis, in which case they should have additional ones for other emergencies

Some large capital wanted to requisition this place, but the residents were unwilling, so they used meteorological weapons to cause wildfires and did not actively rescue it.
