    Always watch out for the guy wearing one booty lol. On a serious note, no matter what happens in the lineup don’t ever get violent. It’s not worth it and it always ends bad and it takes away from
    Our beautiful sport that we enjoy so very much.

    I'm a huge rookie and pissing other (good) surfers off is a big concern for me. Fortunately because of where I live (Barcelona) I'm usually the only one out cause the waves suck so hard. When I do get in someone's way I try to just apologize and make sure it doesn't happen again. It's tough when the good surfers don't give you any courtesy though. Guess that just means I have to get better haha

      I started surfing in my late 20's and learned the same way, not getting in the way of better surfers, apologizing and sometimes being ignored, getting rude comments and looks. A few years forward I surf better than some of them and I'm having more fun. The universe/karma gives me great surf sessions. Cheers from Portugal.

    What if a long boarder catches the set waves, then paddles back out deeper and catches the next best set wave, repeatedly leaving you the shortboarder the scraps.

      1. Get a longboard. 2. Go surf a shore break where long-boarders aren’t at an advantage. 3. Surf bigger and steeper breaks where it makes less difference what size board you’re on. 4. Just whinge heaps in the comments section.

    I've been surfing for around 20 years in PR, Hatteras and Mexico. Last night, I paddled out and there were a some tourists and one local girl out on a great evening of surf. The problem was they were all sitting about half way to the peak. I paddled by them up to the location of the peak. I waited and watched them miss 3 or 4 waves, and then I went. They kept missing a lot of waves and/or deciding not to go for whatever reason. The girl got all frustrated that I kept paddling past their group and up to the peak after I caught my waves and had some words with me. Is there anytime where it's ok to paddle inside of people if they are out of position and wasting waves. I didn't want to be a dick, but they weren't really surfing much either due to not catching waves, and sun was setting. Also, in my experience, the break is almost always a free for all. The good surfers surf, the rest don't. That's life in surfing at 80% of the breaks I've been to. Your insights?

    • @cjgamer2140
      @cjgamer2140 3 года назад +1

      There is a difference between paddling inside of people and the people being off the peak. If the group wasn't sitting on the peak, then they are just wanting the scraps. Sounds to me like you were more than generous and gave them many opportunitys. I do the same here at my home break. If you aren't sitting/taking off at the peak then you will just have to be happy with the inside scraps.

    • @HowtoRip
      @HowtoRip  3 года назад +2

      If waves are going through consistently unridden like CJ said because people are sitting out of position and missing all the waves, then for sure go and sit on the peak.

    Nice video guys! I just wanted to say that when your paddling out, of course you should get out of the way of other people, at least try. But the one surfing should definitely be careful and try to avoid other people, if he can’t and decide to just ride over you because he has « priority » he is definitely in the wrong... That’s just a detail though, good videos guys I like it:))

    • @nickbrennan3389
      @nickbrennan3389 4 года назад +3

      Yes...totally agree. The guy paddling can't move that fast. The surfer up and riding should always try avoid people. Shit happens....sometimes you're in the wrong place

    I feel like in the first clip, the one surfing the wave is actually in the right cause he's closest the the breaking point of the wave and it is clearly a left wave, am I wrong ? and why ?

      Yeah it was his wave but when someone else is a dick there's no need to escalate it.
      When the guy got back a quick "hey maybe u didn't know but the person closest to the break has right of wave so it was kind of a dick move to catch it when I was about to" would've probably been embarrassing enough that guy wouldn't've done it again.

    Good video that everyone who surfs should watch. However you left out 2 important points: 2 times when it is NOT your turn to take a wave.
    1. If you have just ridden a wave and paddled back to the lineup. Do NOT spin around and paddle for the very next wave! IT'S NOT YOUR TURN.
    2. if you have just committed to taking a wave, paddled hard, and missed it. DO NOT keep paddling for subsequent waves til you catch one! ITS NOT YOUR TURN.

    I’m curious about the snaking rule in the following context. I surf a reef break on a longboard with other younger long boarders. I usually sit in the line up and try to wait my turn but it’s hard to always tell who is next with many folks so I sort of hang in my spot and wait to see if anyone else is paddling. If not I go. Anyway I’ve noticed a few times folks on the outside paddle out when a bigger wave comes because the break point moves. When they do that they end up catching the wave earlier. Anyway in short. 1) I was on the inside 2) I had waited 3) Alarge wave came and broke further out.4)The guy paddled for it and caught it placing him on the inside. So I thought I’d been snaked, but in fairness the break point moved a bit due to the size and he recognized it. Wasn’t a big deal except it was the Same guy 3 times in a row and I was fed up and well sometimes you gotta break rules to know the rules. What is the rule? Oh I should mention. I totally get it when you paddle out say 20 yards because a really big set comes. The guy who did the work gets the wave. I’ve talking a different scenario where I’d be catching the wave before it breaks right where I am, I’m on the inside but the breakpoint is moving maybe 10 yards. I feel like its snaking then. I should add I did drop in on the guy after he did that 3 times and we did do some using which wasn’t cool. But seriously just wanna know the rule. I felt like if it’s the same guy 3 times its time to drop in on him and see what happens.

    Great tips, simple stuff that all surfers should learn early on. I just wish all surfers, both experienced and learners would actually abide by them more often than not. At our local break where there is really only one decent take off area on pumping days, all etiquette discussed here goes out the window and testosterone and aggressiveness win out. It is against everything surfing is about but it now happen everywhere and seems to be getting worse. The clear message is then, if you don't like it, F off to other breaks. Respect, patience and just good will should be paramount so we can all shred! There's always waves in the sea...

    • @cg3536
      @cg3536 3 года назад

      It's like that everywhere. What I found is that when I was learning, I didn't get any waves. Then I got a little better and I could pick up some scraps. I slowly progressed and EARNED the privilege of surfing waves at crowded breaks. Surfing is not a right, it's a privilege. I hate when beginners feel entitled. I think you have to pay your dues like everyone else getting up the curve or like you said F off to another break where there are no people. When you're good a surfing you will catch as many waves as you want, even in a crowd.

    And please don't be a surfpolice in the water, blocking peaks, entring ultracrowded spot with 5 friends. Waith the line on a point. Maybe give some waves, to the others. And if you dropped a wave just go out the way and try to avoid a snowball. There is no surfer who didn't do a 'drop-in' in his live, keep the peace, fuck competition and have fun.
