Always thought that was the hydraulics or something for a long time because I'd always hear it during takeoff or landing when they were above us. I wasn't hydraulics though, I was just weapons.
Some suggestions for future sounds - twin-blade Huey thumping, the Aden 30mm Cannon firing from a Hunter, the howl an F-22 makes (not the APU shown in here, but in mid-air), the Tu-95 Bear turboprops, the sidewinder growl, DB-605 supercharger whine from an ME-109, a 707 flying overhead, and of course - a Stuka siren.
Yuzzz on the Huey thump I will also never forget my first encounter with a Chinook over RIT and I went "if that's a damn chinook..." and it was! It's pretty much as loud as a V-22 according to an air force buddy of mine. What was also cool was hearing a C-130 over work one day, as it didn't sound like a prop plane on account of it using turboprops or something (whichever one is just a turbine engine) so it sounded like a jet.
I was an M1 tank mechanic, and while not an aircraft it does use an aircraft engine. I loved hearing the sound of an AGT1500 starting up. The transmission gears go wheeeeeeeeeeeeee... the igniter starts to go tictictictictictictic.. and then there's this FWOOOOMMMMMM when the fire starts. Well all of that *usually* happens, if you did your job correctly at least.
