  • This heat is no joke. I lost 3 chickens in a month. I set out a kiddie pool during the day, and then attached a chicken wire screen to the coop to help keep air flowing during the night. Its 113 by noon some days and my ladies are struggling. What is everyone doing to help keep their chickens well thru this heat?! Comments and advice welcomed 😌 #california #farm #chickens #coop #chickencoop #help #backyardchickens #summer #SoCal #chickenfarm

We are in Arizona and it’s almost a full time job keeping our girls cool. We have plenty of shade with trees, umbrellas, and shade tarps. I constantly give ice water several times a day. Also, watermelon treats and frozen grapes have been great at keeping them hydrated because they pant all day and lose water. Definitely set up misters. Our girls love standing in the grass under their umbrella with the misters. We also have set up two “Arctic Air“mini ACs in the coop at night. Freeze the AC filters and put ice water in the AC units and it helps. If they can free range as much as possible, I think that allows them to get where they’re most comfortable. Oh!! During the summer months, DO NOT give them any corn scratch or corn in their feed, because it heats them up when digesting corn. Our babies have survived 117 degree temperatures and they have done great. Best of luck to our sweet babies!
