We didn’t need a permit for either hike ☺️ for Lac Blanc, we did have to pay to take the gondola. There are a few to choose from. Here is more info on one of them en.chamonix.com/activities/hiking/hiking-trails/hike-to-the-lac-blanc-from-la-flegere

In 1970 I climbed Mt. Blanc with three Scottish boys. We descended over snow covered glacier than is now bare and totally impassable. Astonishing.

We had minimum gear. no idea of elevatjion gain or loss. No GPS, No mountaineering skills and were lucky to make it up and down.
