Ethan, all I can say is this might just be the biggest blessing in your life. Harvard doesn't deserve your spirit, your boldness, and your character. And I don't even say just to be salty. This is what I mean: As someone who had a cookie-cutter Asian-American application, I got rejected by all 11 schools in the U.S. that I applied to (including safeties). Varsity two-time state medal winner in rowing, straight As, AP classes, 99th percentile ACT, club captain, you name it. At the end of the day, these colleges really don't care, because all they see you as is a statistic to fill. That rejection turned out to be the biggest blessing I've ever had, because a year and a half later I graduated from basic training at the US Air Force Academy. Five years after my rejection, and I've flown a supersonic jet trainer; I've worked on a classified project for NASA; I've learned invaluable lessons that could never be learned in an ivy league classroom; and I've met some truly incredible people. In a matter of weeks (given the COVID-19 situation) I will be commissioning as a 2nd Lieutenant in the USAF along with my incredible classmates who will make up the new officer corps of the US Space Force. Continue to be inspired and be inspiring, and you will do great things.

I got rejected to my top choice which was northeastern and I know it’s not an ivy but it really did sting since I put so much effort into getting in. This video really does comfort me bc it reminds me I’m not alone. I see all of my friends getting into top schools but I’m slowly learning that no matter where i end up I’ll still be me and I’ll still do great.
You really gave me hope. I studied for the SAT and got a low/average score and i just felt bad about it. It turned out that my second top college accepted me because of my 4.0. Of course, it wasn't my top choice but to see that made me feel like there was some hope out there. I hope you do well!
sophie alfaro Felt the same way about Stanford REA. You know you really wanted to go to a school when you literally can’t picture yourself anywhere but in that school. Part of me wanted to take a gap year, an impulsive decision after being crushed, but now, even after being rejected by every Ivy League school I applied to, I still try to look at the bright side. Now, I’m heading towards The University of British Columbia; I tell myself to be someone who is happy, and become someone Stanford will face palm themselves for rejecting. I just want you to know, you’ll still be happy else where, maybe not as happy as you would be at Northeastern, but happy regardless. I like to tell myself that, “Everything happens for a reason,” and I am certain you’ll do something special with your life too and I’m loving your new outlook :).
Update for any future seniors who maybe aren’t feeling so great with their decisions: I ended up going to another university, one that was actually towards the bottom of my list and at first I was bummed out but let me tell you. I just finished my first semester and it was the best 4 months of my life. I’ve made the bestest group of friends and had a blast and my professors were great. I promise whatever feeling of hopelessness you feel now, it gets better and you’ll get where you need to be :)

Hey Ethan! I got deferred by Harvard and then waitlisted and then rejected 2 years ago. Harvard was my dream school and I was completely devastated. I thought I was so smart that I would only feel challenged and happy at Harvard. However, 2 years later I’m a rising junior at Michigan and I’m happier than ever. I feel amazed daily by how smart my peers are and I’m constantly challenged to be better. I don’t know what it’ll be like if I actually went to Harvard, but I know I’m so happy and contented with myself right now both academically and socially in ways that I could never imagined. What matters is how much you grow and thrive from your environment. You are amazingly talented and I’m so sure that wherever you end up in the future, you’ll continue to be the legend you are today. Ethan you’re definitely someone who a lot of people can look up to. The one thing that’s hard to convey to admissions officers is a kind of self-awareness and life wisdom, which a lot of accepted students lack to a degree despite outstanding academic credentials and accolades on paper. At 17/18 yrs old, it’s not common for someone to own their complete selves. Having talked to you, I think you’re comfortable in your own shoes and you have a clear understanding of your own values and goals, along with the courage to execute those aspirations. hey man, i was also waitlisted and then rejected from harvard. was waitlisted and then deferred a year at brown, but decided not to attend because they would not have given me any financial aid at all. i ended up going to sarah lawrence college, and i had some great experiences and some awful experiences, but at the end of the day, you got it completely right. college doesn’t define you. you define you. and wherever you go, or if you want to take a year to do something different, just know that if you show up and bring an uncompromising *you* to the table, you will not only find where you are meant to be, but you will make those places better for giving of your time and energy and goodness i know you’re going into these very big transitional years in the midst of a global crisis, so who knows how things will change. but for me as a filipino-american in my late twenties, seeing you have this ownership over your identity and expression is fucking awesome. so thank you for that, and i wish you only good things stay safe

TBH, you're too good for Harvard. I think they may have rejected you to show the world that even people like you who have done something truly unique can get rejected to brag about how they rejected applicants like you to show that getting admitted is harder than it actually is. For example, schools sometimes brag about how many applicants with perfect SAT/ACTs they rejected.
The college admissions system is unfortunately unfair. No matter what college you go to, you will still receive a great education so do not be discouraged.

Head up mentality is everything. When you focus down and use rejection as a positive motivator to do whatever you may want to pursue in life, it increases the value of the institution you yourself took part in for the future generations. That right there is true impact. From my own lessons in life, I can tell you undergrad is all about figuring out the right path so make sure you take your electives seriously and explore the wide array of fields at your disposal as a college student. Lastly, the big name schools will still be there when and if you desire to ever get a masters degree. Maybe the tougher climb makes the view all that much sweeter.

I was also rejected... it kinda sucked to see a lot of the hard work I put in go to be dismissed, but I’m super grateful that at least I had the opportunity. I was admitted into another awesome college and I’m glad to see you doing well man

loved this video man. i've been there, getting rejected from most colleges I applied to (a lot of them being highly prestigious schools). I'm now three years into my college career, and I've realized it's so much more important what you do in college vs. where you do it. I see your drive + positive mindset and I can't wait to see you do big things
hey man, i was also waitlisted and then rejected from harvard. was waitlisted and then deferred a year at brown, but decided not to attend because they would not have given me any financial aid at all. i ended up going to sarah lawrence college, and i had some great experiences and some awful experiences, but at the end of the day, you got it completely right. college doesn’t define you. you define you. and wherever you go, or if you want to take a year to do something different, just know that if you show up and bring an uncompromising *you* to the table, you will not only find where you are meant to be, but you will make those places better for giving of your time and energy and goodness
i know you’re going into these very big transitional years in the midst of a global crisis, so who knows how things will change. but for me as a filipino-american in my late twenties, seeing you have this ownership over your identity and expression is fucking awesome. so thank you for that, and i wish you only good things

TBH, you're too good for Harvard. I think they may have rejected you to show the world that even people like you who have done something truly unique can get rejected to brag about how they rejected applicants like you to show that getting admitted is harder than it actually is. For example, schools sometimes brag about how many applicants with perfect SAT/ACTs they rejected.

Fellow senior here, I also got rejected from the ivy schools I applied to. That being said I've realized that it's not about where you go but how much you have to offer and what you choose to do with it. Keep your head up and make them realize they missed out!

Head up mentality is everything. When you focus down and use rejection as a positive motivator to do whatever you may want to pursue in life, it increases the value of the institution you yourself took part in for the future generations. That right there is true impact. From my own lessons in life, I can tell you undergrad is all about figuring out the right path so make sure you take your electives seriously and explore the wide array of fields at your disposal as a college student. Lastly, the big name schools will still be there when and if you desire to ever get a masters degree. Maybe the tougher climb makes the view all that much sweeter.
