Finally got around to watching this. I wanna paint all my cheap (but awesome) Squire headstocks. I'm a huge fan of matching headstocks. I only have one matching and that's my Squire VM Jag ss bass in black. It's a beauty! Glad to see you're posting more vids these days. You're on of my faves. The 2 second naked jam make me spit my coffee this morning. Funny as f*ck man! Shows your sense of humor. Hilarious!!!! Happy New Year Rob. 👍
Yeah bro get them painted look so much better, check my latest video I just rebuilt a VM Jag bass. 😂😂 Well had to celebrate Frusciante coming back. Happy new year 🎉
How ironic that i’ll paint a headstock that has exact shape that i wanted and this helped me out thanks mani :) Red body with red headstock and black strat with black headstock heh XD
Great idea to tape off the sides of the headstock. Did you end up wet sanding before or after the clear coat? I'm going to do my Squier headstock as well.
Not experienced with paint, but I'm thinking of attempting this with my bullet mustang, add some custom decals and possibly repaint the body to match it. I really wish I knew how to change the bridge from that strat-style one to a proper Mustang bridge. I'd love to give it a true grungey appearance and make it stand out. Dakota red is such a lovely shade!
Go for it just take your time preparation is the most important part. As for the vibrato you'll need a router to make the route for the vibrato to fit, the body is very thin personally I wouldn't bother .
@@theguitarmanifesto Yeah, that's why I've been watching your videos to make sure it gets done right. I personally hate how the guitar looks now, with standard setup and how it was built, so I want it to work for me and fit the part, given I'm in a band now for the first time. I want to varnish the neck, but would I varnish it first or paint the headstock first? I've literally never modded any instrument in my life, so it's all new territory.
Finally got on the move with my own mods over here, Rob! Spent some time sanding down the neck on my bullet Mustang and gave it an American Walnut stain. I'll be using this video as a guide for when I paint the headstock and apply new waterslide decals to the headstock with it! I'll have to show you when it's fully done at some point, think it'll be your type of 'Stang!
Good to know about the difference in neck fits. Was considering the same thing, but then your video drops the same day someone locally is selling a set of 70s style tuners that will match the big headstock 😁
I have another question sorry tomorrow I finally start to paint the Headstock of my Jag .. I understood well that after the 4 coats of paint you must wait few weeks before give the 2 clear lacquer coats ? 😑 Thank u again 🙏🙏
Big thank you for making this vid I recently got a squier standart strat body and now when I will get a neck for it I will know how to paint it (also you are like the first ever guy to do a tutorial on doing this on RUclips) thanks🎸🎸🎸🎸
Perfect video with the how to put a sticker on the headstock I’m going to modify the squier Olympic white classic vibe jazzmaster to match the fender 64 vintage jazzmaster thom yorke uses
What paints do you use then Rob? Like is your colour coat acrylic and then a 2K clear coat? I don’t really know this process as all the paint jobs I’ve done myself have been Nitro. I’d really like to know what you use pls mate if you don’t mind 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼 Haha Rob I enjoyed that little 0.5 second clip in your Dear hunter hat 😂😂😂 made me piss that did 😂
Hello! I really enjoyed this video! Say you wanted a black headstock and the neck the same color, would it be the same process as the headstock basically?
The Guitar Manifesto I wish we could post photos in the replies. The Jag I did was Ghost Silver. It was a Blacktop Jag. It looked factory when I was done with wet-sanding and polishing. Makes the biggest difference you know.
Ooh nice bet it looks great, I've had a few Blacktop Jags awesome guitars really love the sound of them humbuckers 😎🎸 I'm on Facebook and Instagram The guitar manifesto if you want to tag me a pic
Sponge sand pad. Good man. Always got one in my pocket at work. *was you naked playing guitar or did someone give me a magic chicken and mushroom pie for tea? Lololol :D
Sound...might try this on my tanglewood tele headstock. I put in a wired tele harness today with the orange drop treble bleed and jumbo pots but had to chisel out (no dremel) room for the wider pots as the cavity rout was just a bawhair too tight. Installing a precut bone nut over the holidays so might just spray the head stock first👍. Also replaced the tele neck pup with a Wilkinson Strat pick up and used a flat and round file (no dremel) to widen the pickguard . Great channel BTW gave me the confidence to mod beyond just changing tuners and pickguards. Need a dremel though......maybe I'll ask Santa Ho Ho Ho ! Cheers and Happy Christmas 👍
Ah awesome that's some solid mods you've made there best it's sounds killer 🤘🎸 You gotta work with what you've got but yes a Dremel makes like so much easier. Glad you like the channel and I've inspired you to mod guitars 🎸🤘 merry Christmas and happy new year 🎄🎅
Sooo it just ends there? Any footage of applying the clear coat and the putting on the decals? Maybe even just taking off the tape? How it looks after it dried?? You could have at least put in a picture of the end result. I'm actually going to paint my strat headstock so I was hoping for a real video. This is dissapointing
The most chilled out guitar vids on youtube...
Cool as a cucumber me 🥒 no nut case, over the top millennial drama on this channel 😂👌🎸😎🇬🇧
I've been considering painting the headstock on my vintage modified jazzmaster and then you post this video. Just what I needed!
Yeah bro go for it, the water slide decals are easy to fit too (video in the new year)

ah awesome good choice
The Guitar Manifesto yep! Btw what you think of my guitar i know it looks crappy but by time goes I’ll slowly turn it into vandy
Great idea to tape off the sides of the headstock. Did you end up wet sanding before or after the clear coat? I'm going to do my Squier headstock as well.
I didn't, definitely not between coats. The final coat went on really smooth so didn't need to wet sand after
Amazing video, are these paint cans that you used available online? Where can I purchase the paint and the clear coat? Thnx
No idea Google it
Love how much videos you've been pumping out lately. And the random clip of you naked towards the end was hilarious 😂
Business as usual bro 🎸👌😎🇬🇧

Yeah, usefull video for future projects✊🏻 where do you get Squier necks? Ebay?
No from whole guitars although I do sell Squier necks
If you're in the US check out stratosphereparts.com.
They have all kinds of stuff on there
Good shout they have some great stuff on there 👌🎸
Good to know about the difference in neck fits. Was considering the same thing, but then your video drops the same day someone locally is selling a set of 70s style tuners that will match the big headstock 😁
Yeah the neck is a good 4mm smaller in width. Like I said in the video everything for a reason all the stars aligned 🎸👌😎🇬🇧
Question: What grits did you use to sand the logo off the headstock? Very informative video, thanks for posting.
I'm not sure was a fine sanding block, probably around 800 grit
@@theguitarmanifesto Understood, thanks.
What the f was that 7:34
😂😂 it's a strange world out there
@@theguitarmanifesto hey bro, can I use nitrocellulose varnish over acrylic spray paint?
Frusciante part was epic brother
🤣🤣 rock on 😀
Just wait 10 Min between one hand spry and another ? I would like to paint black the headstock of my Squier Jag 🖤
Yes 10 minutes between coats does the trick 👌
@@theguitarmanifesto Thank
You so much 🙃

No you can do it after 30 minutes
I tried this but used a fine sandpaper before doing the lacquer which resulted in lots of lumps.
Big thank you for making this vid I recently got a squier standart strat body and now when I will get a neck for it I will know how to paint it (also you are like the first ever guy to do a tutorial on doing this on RUclips) thanks🎸🎸🎸🎸
Do you know of a way to add back the logo to the headstock after refinishing it?

where would you recommend getting the water slide decal from now that old fret is not doing it anymore?
www.rothkoandfrost.com/guitar-making-supplies-c83/headstock-decals-c1
That's who I always use, can make custom names too
@@theguitarmanifesto how do you get ahold of him?
Great video, How long did you wait before you added the decal ?
A few hours
Perfect video with the how to put a sticker on the headstock I’m going to modify the squier Olympic white classic vibe jazzmaster to match the fender 64 vintage jazzmaster thom yorke uses
Awesome 👌🎸
This really helpful on guitar projects you’re amazing and Merry Christmas
Glad it helps 👌
Thank you very much, have a great Christmas to you and your family 🎄🎅

Coming along nicely

Haha Rob I enjoyed that little 0.5 second clip in your Dear hunter hat 😂😂😂 made me piss that did 😂
I use whatever vehicle paint I have laying around or I find cheap, 2k stuff would be a better option for a cleaner finish I guess
@@theguitarmanifesto Cheers mate, I’m gonna look Into giving it a go
Hello! I really enjoyed this video! Say you wanted a black headstock and the neck the same color, would it be the same process as the headstock basically?
Yes exactly the same process 👌
That was a good choice, to stick with the Original neck. Enjoyed the Video.
Thanks dude 🎸💯👌
Looks fantastic :)
Thanks bro 🎸👌
7:33 wtf
Must be a glitch in the matrix or something 😏
Sorry to sound stupid. But what grade of sandpaper did you use to remove the writing on the headstock?
600 or 800 grit would do the job
cool cool
Thanks 🎸👌
I’ve done this with a fender Jag and a Squier Mustang. They look way better with matching headstock.
Oh yes most definitely last Jag I done it on was a surf green one, it's in my earlier videos
The Guitar Manifesto I wish we could post photos in the replies. The Jag I did was Ghost Silver. It was a Blacktop Jag. It looked factory when I was done with wet-sanding and polishing. Makes the biggest difference you know.

What grit is that sand block? Great video!
Just a fine block like around 1000 grit maybe
what kind of red was used? ferric red or maroon or plain red?
It was car paint some VW colour, I just looked for the closest match to Dakota red
Did I miss the part where you covered the hold for the trussrod?
Let it flow 😂😂 one turn with an Allen wrench and the world's good
Hi, you didn't protect the truss rod access. Didn't it get permanently glued by all those paint and lacquer coats???
No it's fine
Sponge sand pad. Good man. Always got one in my pocket at work.
*was you naked playing guitar or did someone give me a magic chicken and mushroom pie for tea? Lololol :D
Sponge sand pads are also good for frets ends and round the edge of the fingerboard I link a video I made on that subject.
Must be a RHCP 😂 🌶️🔥🎸😮😎

if you want to use the vintage tuners ebay has some bushings for larger holes?
oops! you dont need em! good one.
Yeah bro the tuners fit 🎸👌
Maybe my warmoth neck will have a matching head stock as well haha, I didn't think of that until I saw this video bruh
YES you need to paint will look awesome 😮🎸👌
I THOUGHT SOMEONE WAS NEXT TO ME WHEN THE VIDEO STARTED
Can you do a review on a Kramer Baretta special please!
I may well do 🎸👌
What if you have a strat body but just want to do the face?
Same principle
@@theguitarmanifesto yeah but a headstock is flat and a strat is curvy round the edges.
How long do you let it harden ? Two weeks ? Three weeks ?
A few days does the job
What about the trust rod?
Looks great red
The Guitar Manifesto I wouldn’t disagree. Im painting my headstock black, but if I don’t cover the trust rod, will that not wreck it??
Is it just regular car spray paint ?
Yes just regular car paint 🎸👌
