Why We LOVE Raising Turkeys - CUTEST Personalities! 🦃

  • We've had our new baby chickens and turkeys for about 2 weeks now. They have graduated from the indoor brooding setup, to the outdoor mobile chicken coop! Everyone is going great so far, and growing so fast 🦃 🐔 On warm days, we open up the coop and them run around on the ground in the tractor area. They eat some grass, and hunt for bugs. The chickens haven't been brave enough to come out yet, but the turkeys have this wonderful curious personality about them & waste no time venturing out and about.
    We also update you on the status of the baby pine trees we brought home from out cabin the other day. And how you how and where we planted them. They're doing awesome so far, and are showing no signs of any needle discoloration or anything. So it's looking like a successful project so far!

    Happy belated birthday Rachel. It looks like you had fun.
    I take a piece of a dowel rod or a piece of narrow, scrap lumber and lay it across the top of the inside lip of the cooler and let the lid rest on the dowel rod/scrap lumber just so it can get some air flow.

    Coolers, fans, saws, etc. Always clean them before storage. Nothing worse than having to do that right when you need to use it. Rachel had PERFECT weather out here (in San Diego) this weekend. I direct sowed alot of veggies and herbs in my garden.

    At least you clean your ice chest out, my hubby uses them, leaves the drinks and water in them. Then, surprise, when I need them, they are full of drinks and water or just plain dirty (we keep some of them outside). Living in SE Louisiana and having hurricane season, I like being able to just go get the ice chest and be able to know it's clean and ready to go. Nothing wrong with that. Hope Rachel enjoys her time with her daughter.

    Already strutting their stuff at ya lol. So cute! That one baby "pine" tree you were sitting by almost looks like a Tamarack with all those new needles as they lose their needle every fall. We have never had a mold problem in our coolers but we do the same thing as you. We set them upside down with the lids opened till they are dry. Everyone I know cleans them after every use regardless if they need it or not. It's not so weird after all!

    I clean my coolers religiously now after each use too. I let a friend borrow one and didn't know he didn't clean/dry it out. After a few weeks, I went to use it and it grew a powerful funk/cold situation. Now, I clean well, prop open to dry, and when I go to store, I toss a few of those silica gel packets in them. I used to just store them propped open with a dowel but found some unwanted guests the last time I did that. No more lol.

    The birds are awesome. Yep you really should rinse/bleach out your coolers each time you use them. It’s just a safe good handler practice. The stuff from the barn was just too “hot”. Typically young plants and trees aren’t ready for heavy fertilizer. It’s best to wait until they mature a while and or just top dress with aged compost.

    Dear Todd, Enjoyed your post on the young turkeys and the young white pine trees you brought back from your cabin. Sorry to hear about the pine trees in pots. Please tell us exactly what burned their needles? Was it fresh manure from the barn? What was the lesson learned? Many of us could probably learn from your experience. As always, thank you for your instructive and enjoyable videos. Sincerely, Larry Clarence Lewis, Canada.

    • @1870s
      @1870s  3 года назад +1

      Goat manure is normally not considered "hot". In that you can apply it to your garden without composting it first. I thought, this has a lot of nutrients, I bet the pines would enjoy it. Well, after living in a pot for nearly 2 years, to goat manure was still too "hot" for the sterile life they had been living. And it was a shock to their system. All the needles turned brown. I removed as much of the poop as I could, but still so much had leached into the soil at that point, it was just too much for them. By getting them out of the pots, and into a much larger volume of space. The roots now have more space to breath "in fresh soil" now. Which is probably why they're starting to recover. My theory 😃 I hope that makes sense.

    I think it’s a good idea to clean your cooler like that. I would also add a dowel or something to slightly prop it open while being stored, just in case there was some moisture you weren’t aware of. You can also use white vinegar instead, so it does have a lingering bleach smell.

    I've watched great permaculture videos on staging the trees (walnut, maple, mulberry, etc. Then apple trees, pear, peach, elderberry and in the lowest level using berry bushes). Of course planting in the direction that they will not shade out the ones below completely. So interesting to me. If only I had more land.
    I've also learned the hard way with coolers. Now, I just flip upside down and air dry.

    I love that chicken tractor! Does it require a small tractor or mower to move it since it looks pretty big?
    Also I know that feeling you had with the tree. I'm a new gardener so sometimes when things go really good I get too ambitious too fast and ruin progress. Last year though my tomatoes ended up not getting staked up because I got a really sick for a month and I went back out and they were forests with various stem parts rooted randomly into the dirt. They produced great but were a mess to handle and a bit unsightly.

    Todd,
    Have a question, do you guys have goats because you’re cute pets? Or do you actually drink their milk? Are you harvest them? Or are they just your pets that help you with the yard fertilizing it? Just being nosy because I never hear you both talking about goats milk.

    I've got to help you with your trees. Adding peat moss lowers the Ph of the soil a bit, not raise it. Which is good for most trees. Adding barn material raises the Ph which is why they went downhill fast. Evergreens don't like higher Ph. The leaves will help a bit. Or mulch would benefit any trees. Animals are always attracted to fresh dirt or different smelling soil. The surface roots are the roots responsible for taking up most of the nutrients so don't dig around the trees.

    Noticed air gap between the bottom of the tractor and the ground that a mink could easily get through. Do you have mink in your area? I cant use tractors because of uneven ground.

    • @1870s
      @1870s  3 года назад

      Haven't come across a mink around here, so far. Mostly opossum and racoons. At night, when most of our predators are hunting, the chickens and turkeys are all up inside the coop area above. It has a locked door, wood walls, and the floor is 1/4 steel hardware cloth (not chicken wire). And there's roosts inside, so the chickens can get up off the floor. So while not perfect, we feel is safe enough for us where we live.

    • @carols1030
