He might be able to podium the giro or vuelta depending on schedule, but I think cyclocross and xc is still crucial for him. It’s one thing that makes him such a good classics rider - all the best classics guys have great bike handling skills and can handle repeated punchy efforts. Let him crack on and he might have an rvv or roubaix before long

As to "why?".........because he has the talent to succeed as the leader of a grand tour team, and failing to make the most of your talent is something most pro sportsmen regret once they have retired.
