    Let’s fix the news. Together!
Thailand has always suffered from one of the most oppressive and unique political systems in the world: a mixture of military dictatorship, monarchy, and theocracy. However, all of this could change.
Since the mid-2020, the streets of Thailand have been filled with protests led by Mr. Thanathorn Juangroogruangkit and other figures such as lawyer Anon Nampa, who are calling for democracy, economic reforms, and free elections. In a country as monarchical and traditional as Thailand, more and more people are joining these protests.
But why have these movements arisen just now? What are these protesters asking for? And what are their chances of success? In this VisualPolitik video, we answer these questions.

You are likely to find your way to Thailand. Then you will be seduced by a beautiful woman, and she wants to wait until marriage. Then you get married, and find out that she is actually a he.....

I was in Thailand long ago when the current king was the crown prince, while riding in a cab, my tour guide started telling me how the crown prince was unpopular and went into some of the specifics. The driver of the cab gave her a stern look through the rear view mirror. She stopped mid sentence with a look of fear on her face.

@Lazer Benabba Then you guys can do something to get rid of them once and for all. You're a democracy. Don't know why nothing has been done.
The way I see it, it was land that they conquered over centuries and passed down to family, and given what they had before vs what they have now, I'm pretty sure they would still love to be an actual monarchy with real power. But they don't. And given what the Monarchy has done for the British over these centuries, I would say UK citizens had it pretty good.
There was no "revolution", and the monarchy slowly let their power slip away giving the people more freedoms, and a democracy.

I am Thai. Although graduated in finance, I once worked in legal related dept.
One day my friend was bringing suit back with her at 5pm.
I asked for reason since she normally had master degree class in university on that day. She said with straight face that because the judge is the lecturer.
I got confused since our work attire, shirt and slack, is already quite formal.
She answered that this is normal since the judge is acting as representative of the king, and further elaborated that there is also ceremony that the king directly delegate power to judge. Therefore, everyone should treat judge like king is participating by himself.
    I couldn't speak a word.
That is the class, not the court, isn't it? The power of judge is spelled in constitution, right? A lot of WHY flew in my head.
Plus, my friend wasn't even seem disturbed at all.
In my opinion, it looks like all Thai legal people already accustom to such idea. And you have no hope to have fair verdict in monarchy related case nor hope for reforming by normal mean.

At that time all of the Thais I met held a deep affection for their then king, often recounting the sacrifices he and his brother went through for the people's sake. Even then the people i met were not keen on his declared heir the crown prince becoming king. They really liked his sister, the crown princess though.

there is a misunderstanding of all this deity/god king business. Thailand is a buddhist country and in buddhism gods are nothing more than bodhisattvas or higher level beings who helped/learned from the buddha and exist on different planes of existence. Of course since Thailand follows theravada buddhism, one should not take the meaning of being god literally. Rather it is more that as the lord of the people the King is the upholder of the dharma and must act in accordance with it. Furthermore in the past the thai kingdom had close ties to the indian dieties such as Indra and Vishnu though in thailand they are not viewed as supreme deities like hinduism but as enlightend bodhisattvas. That is why he is held in so much reverence because he is supposed to be buddha's representative on the earth and act as an enlightened monarch. I dont get where these western notions of god kings applies. I mean sure if maybe thailand was a hindu nation/beleived in brahman then yeah the claim that the thai king is a god would work but they are a buddhist nation for the most part. Hope that makes sense so he isnt really a god king in the sense of being a literal deity but rather he is supposed to act as an enlightened monarch and protect the buddha's teaching and ensure he rules his people as such and that is why their is so much respect for him.

The reason that the Thai king is considered to be semi divine is because of the coronation ceremony. Even today, there are a group of Brahman priests attached to the royal court. Their temples are located near the Wat Suthat and it is they who perform much of the coronation ritual which is essentially Brahmanic in nature. Images of the hindu gods Phra Isuan (Shiva) Phra Narai (Vishnu) Phra Pee Kanet (Ganesh) and Phra In (Indra) are brought from their temples to the grand palace to take part in the coronation investiture. The hall in the palace where the king's major throne is located is called the Amarindra Winichai or Audience Hall of Indra indicating the king's semi divine nature. The Brahmans have a many other tasks such as lighting the sacred Chai candles and deciphering the royal horoscopes. The last service they perform for the king is the elaborate cremation ceremony which lasts one year and is all completely Brahmanic concluding with the huge Phra Men tower from where the kings body is burnt as he ascends into heaven. All of this and so much more can be found in a really great book "Siamese State Ceremonies" by Quaritch Wales

When going to see a movie in Bangkok, they require the audience to stand before the movie starts and show clips of the king in different places doing various things. When Bumibol (sp?) was king, they often showed him dressed in average clothes with a camera (one of his hobbies) around his neck or patting a kid on the head all backed by this sweet music. I have to admit that even I, a foreigner, welled up a bit as he seemed like such a good guy. Not saying that he wasn't but it's incredible how well PR can work. It's funny how we humans seem to need someone to look up to as a leader yet the reality is that most of them are enriching themselves at our expense with very few exceptions.

Today, it's about 4700 royal projects all over Thailand, more than 10 billion baht (300 million dollars) were spend on his royal projects each year. This is not including his personal usage. And take a guess, which royal family is the richest in the world?
Not to mention that this authoritarian military government is the one who staged a coup in the reign of Rama 9, not 10.

Malaysia economy and politics are shit shows too. The kings in Malaysia have no authorisation at all, the power is on the prime minister. Yet the prime ministers arent any better than their neighbours, moreover the country economy is in desperation from what I can see. Hence, the king in Thailand is more like the prime minister in Malaysia, which corrupted system will always favour in their way. • @MASViper

@@trl4963 Wait, who is the one that elected the current Malaysian prime minister?
Besides, my comment is more about what the Thai royal should do to have people on his side, not just saying he is on the people's side by riding a public train that has been modified specifically for him. It's not like he listened anyway.
Information from Wikipedia of sultans in Malaysia (too lazy to explain in my own word):
Each of the nine rulers serves as the head of state of his own state, as well as the head of the religion of Islam in his state.[3] As with other constitutional monarchs around the world, the rulers do not participate in the actual governance in their states; instead, each of them is bound by convention to act on the advice of the head of government of his state, known as Menteri Besar (pl. Menteri-menteri Besar). However, the ruler of each state has discretionary powers in appointing the Menteri Besar that commands a majority in the state legislative assembly, and refusing a dissolution of the state assembly when requested by the Menteri Besar.[citation needed] The powers of the monarchs have been restricted over time, although there is debate about the precise limits of their powers.[4]
The Yang di-Pertuan Agong is the federal head of state. His symbolic roles include being the Commander-in-Chief of the Malaysian Armed Forces, and carrying out diplomatic functions such as receiving foreign diplomats and representing Malaysia on state visits. The Yang di-Pertuan Agong is the head of Islam in his own state, the four states without rulers (Penang, Malacca, Sabah and Sarawak) and the Federal Territories. The Yang di-Pertuan Agong is required to delegate all his state powers to a regent, except for the role of head of Islam. Similar to other rulers, the Yang di-Pertuan Agong acts on the advice of the Prime Minister, and has discretionary powers in appointing the Prime Minister that commands a majority in the Dewan Rakyat, the lower house of the Parliament,[5] and refusing a dissolution of the Parliament. The Yang di-Pertuan Agong also appoints the Yang di-Pertua Negeri, the ceremonial governors for the four states without rulers, on the advice of the Prime Minister and the Chief Ministers of the states.
A unique feature of the constitutional monarchy in Malaysia is the Conference of Rulers, consisting of the nine rulers and the four Yang di-Pertua Negeris. The Conference convenes triannually to discuss various issues related to state and national policies. The most important role of the Conference is to elect the Yang di-Pertuan Agong every five years or when a vacancy occurs. Only the rulers participate in the election of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, as well as discussions related to rulers' privileges and religious observances. The Conference's other role in the federal governance of the country is to give consent to amendments of certain entrenched provisions of the federal constitution, namely those pertaining to the status of the rulers, the special privileges of the Bumiputra, the status of the Malay language as the national language, and the status of Islam as the religion of the federation.

@@richard0807 It would be a grave mistake to compare Thai government to David Cameron. First of all, they didn't just tell people to vote yes. But they also arrest a lot of people who campaign for vote no (since the new constitution grants unelected officials the power to vote for prime minister, the officials whom appointer is the junta itself). The media are also told not to give any platform for debate or risk being banned. Given all this, as a Thai, I think this is absolutely an example of their malevolent rule

There was always going to be upheaval once the old king died. I'm sure it will get bigger and more violent. People always said (privately) that they would rather have the (fat) princess as monarch, rather than the crown prince, but the old king made him heir apparent.
I remember when banknotes with the new king were issued. A barmaid kissed a note I gave her with the old king, and made a spitting motion to the new one.
I expect there will be major change eventually. This king has 4 sons that he disowned when he divorced their mother. They grew up in the USA without the royal upbringing. His other son and heir appears to not be fully normal and probably could never perform royal duties like commanding an army.
As for LGBT rights, none of that is a surprise. LGBT isn't an issue here really. Maybe in conservative organisations being a ladyboy might be a problem, but same sex couples are everywhere and open. People don't really care what others are getting up to.
Also, Thais rarely bother with the family name except in formal situations. People are usually known by their first names.
When things are normal in the world, do come to Thailand. It's a great place. The freaky shit, regular wtf moments, total lack of OHS awareness combined with generally pleasant and respectful people and top beaches and scenery make it a very addictive place.

Just one thing to pick up on here; Thais generally uses a nick name. Not their first name. These seem to be chosen by their parents when they are babies. Most stick with these, some change them. Popular names translate to frog, bird, fatty, one, two and pig, etc.

After years of not being able to voice our frustrations, its refreshing and amazing to see un-biased overview of the situation there. You have helped in lending Thai people a voice.
