I was persuaded to name my daughter Cadence due to the beautiful melody of this song. 40-some odd years later, I'm about to retire to the little town of Cascade - rather serendipitous as Fripp might say.
OK I was a 17 year old black drummer in NJ when I first heard King Crimson I'm 70 now and I have not heard much music of this quality since. Had the pleasure to see King Crimson with Genisus at Tuffs University while attending Berkeley music school in Boston. Almost quit after that concert. Amazing compositions and exrodinary live presentation. I write this in 2022. They don't do it like that anymore. 🐼
Saw King Crimson in the early 70's and was blown away with their mix of music, still sounds great today. Having said that, i was also blown away with Yes, Genesis, Wishbone Ash, Pink Floyd, Fleetwood Mac, Deep Purple, Black Sabbath and many more all at the same time, those definitely were fabulous times.
As for the piano it sounds as if Roger O'donnel from The Cure has be somewhat inspired on songs like Treasure and Homesick. Aside his work with The Cure he has done some albums with instrumental music for piano and cellos. On these albums some of his piano are not far from C&C. As a side note I remember Cure guitarist Reeves Gabrels saying that Fripp was/is a huge inspiration in terms of playing solos that were not just show-off.
I was going to say what about the reed? Or flute? That's just gorgeous accompaniment. Point to me of another modern day tune using both instruments that is just as lovely!
I saw one comment on the now disabled comment section of the Topic videos that decribed KC as the Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde of music, being able to go from soft songs like this to really heavy tracks. And i couldn't agree more.

This was the first KC album I ever heard, and I sometimes wonder if the acoustic guitar playing in Cadence and Cascade is what inspired me to pick up the instrument to begin with, even if I don't attempt to play like this at all. Guitar...piano...flute solo...light ride playing. It all just hangs together. GREAT SONG!!
Well, I knew wanted to play guitar after listening to the "In the wake of Poseidon" and "Lizard" albums. I believed that it was possible to use acoustic guitar to make a helluva noise! 🤪

This is my 'go to sleep' song, simply for the gentle melody, beautiful guitar, soft percussion, whimsical keys, and of course Gordans gorgeous soft singing, RIP Mr Haskell, you made a lot of people happy from your singing and craft as a musician, I wish you well good sir.
Although I really Haskell's vocal, I'd say Boz Burrell's version is my personal favorite; I'm just not tearing like I did listening to Burrell or even Lake's guide vocal. Still gives me the goosebumps on my arms no matter which of the three versions it is.
As beautiful a version as Haskell’s is, and it surely is, I still prefer Lake’s. To be fair Lake’s is only a guide vocal and is without the exquisite completed production work of the album version. Gile’s drumming is stellar.
I'm pretty sure you meant to write Diavolo ,but dovolio sounds like some sort of Italian food. Also ,KC fans aren't really welcome to JoJo fans in comment section
After all, this original vocal is better than Lake's version. I acknowledge the lack of Haskell's vocal ability. But it's no doubt Haskell's voice has special character.
Go listen to the sister song.... FLIGHT OF THE IBIS by McDonald and Giles after they departed. Then read about the splitting of this song between the 2 bands. One group got the music and the other got the lyrics, cool story. I like both songs, but IBIS is superb.

Cadence and Cascade
Kept a man named Jade
Cool in the shade
While his audience played
[Chorus 1]
Purred, whispered "Spend us too
We only serve for you"
[Verse 2]
Sliding mystified
On the wine of the tide
Stared pale-eyed
As his veil fell aside
[Chorus 2]
Sad paper courtesan
They found him just a man
[Bridge]
Caravan Hotel
Where the sequin spell fell
Custom of the game
Cadence oiled in love
Licked his velvet gloved hand
Cascade kissed his name
[Instrumental Verse: Flute Solo]
[Chorus 2]
Sad paper courtesan
They knew him just a man
[Outro]
Cadence and Cascade
