its been 24 hours but this ED still breaks me. Eren's character of wanting to have freedom and live a long life with everyone is very tragic as the moment he was born, his life was already fated to end in an early age without experiencing the freedom he fought for all his 19 years of life.
And it foreshadows a possible anime original ending Edit: POSSIBLE SPOILER ALERT, IM EXPLAINING THE POSSIBLE REASON SO TREAD CAREFULLY. the explanation is that here, Eren takes hold of Mikasa’s scarf and you notice an adult version of him walking through the “clean” flourished garden ALONE with the palace broken. This tells you that eren, in this ending, Eren would have killed off everyone, and holds on to Mikasa’s scarf as a memory of her, and the series ends with historia and MAYBE Eren’s child, a newborn Ymir, the first free child. It was the last panel Isayama drew and you can check his Instagram. but obviously the ending was changed for the manga, so eren died and everyone lived, the imagery here and the postulated original “dark ending” would basically show the opposite, where everyone is killed off harshly, for a reborn, free world. As the newborn child is the first free child, Eren is basically all alone as you see in the garden, and the kingdom is over (look inside the palace it’s broken). The cycle is finally broken.

One other beautiful detail in this ending is how Eren never once looks back, and keeps walking forward until the very end. However, when his goal is seemingly achieved he looks back and then fades away. The symbolism in the ending is incredible.
I am actually sad that this is not the real final ending theme, I can’t imagine better ending than this for the finale. It gives the emotions so well. I am super curious how final edition will be really like

it’s so sad watching him unravel the truth and become so dedicated to freedom the more he grows older, this anime is a masterpiece and is much more deeper than people think.

The more accurate translation is actually “Devil Child” which I think is more fitting. Eren was never evil by nature, no one is which is one of the core messages of this series.

The lyrics, well, they revolve all around the people he loves, however, as you said, a bit more towards mikasa. This ed is basically the answers to mikasa’s questions in the ed from season 1. Which imo, going back and forth through the lyrics, the answers don’t seem to be strictly for mikasa, especially the “you.” This is my opinion though, I just see this ed this way rather than strictly eren’s words for mikasa like most people do.

when eren is in the bird cage , he is surrounded by poppies which symbolise death , eternal sleep and remembrance to fallen soldiers. when he is released from the cage he is stood in a field of wildflowers which commonly symbolise happiness and joy. the scene also heavily features campanula’s which mean everlasting love.
It's also about the homogenous flowers vs diverse flowers actually.. They're born free, then trapped in a cage but inside the cage, it's peaceful but homogenous and also that death symbolism thing. And then the lyrics says "i dont want just to live" and they're free. But with the cost of abandoned structures there. But it's indeed beautiful because lots of diversity there. And also finally be free

Literally could not create a more fitting ED to capture Eren as a character by the end. The way the visuals and lyrics touched on what is going on inside his mind nearly brought me to tears, so perfectly done.
Exactly! And “Don’t cry about the destiny we were born with. Cause we are all free.” Perfectly encapsulates the point - just like when Carla said “he’s already special because he was born into this world”. You don’t need to escape the birdcage, because freedom is within. And Eren in this ending realizes how beautiful it is in the birdcage with the flowers and all.

今までの集大成感やばいな、小学生の頃毎週月曜日になるの待ってちみちみ見てたアニメがこんな感じで結末を迎えるって、MVの中にあった街に草木が生えてきてる感じもアニメの中だけじゃなくて現実でも時間が経ってる感じがして泣けてくる。10年かけて伏線全部回収できる作者さんも凄いしこんなに綺麗な作画で進撃の巨人をリアルタイムで見れたことが最高だわ

0:50で一気に景色が色付く演出は鳥肌の一言、美しい自然と荒廃した建物を夕暮れの光が照らしていて見事に「この世界は残酷だ、そしてとても美しい」を表現してる
歌詞とエレンを見るだけで泣けるし、同時に本当に終わってしまうんだというノスタルジックな気分になれる最高のED
幼少期のエレンは外の世界に夢を抱いていたけど、グリシャの記憶で外の世界を知り絶望してそれを考えると余計に泣ける。
この景色はもしかしたら海の向こうに敵がいなかったときのあの景色だったのかもしれないですね。
このアニメを食わず嫌いして当時見なかった事を凄い後悔してるけど今からこの神作を見れるってことは本当に幸せだと思ってる
進撃のFinalに相応しいedだと思うし伏線も凄くて涙が止まんない

to those who didn't notice, yes this ending is almost exactly parallel to ending 1 of the series with mikasa as centre of the ending

Edit: POSSIBLE SPOILER ALERT, IM EXPLAINING THE POSSIBLE REASON SO TREAD CAREFULLY.
the explanation is that here, Eren takes hold of Mikasa’s scarf and you notice an adult version of him walking through the “clean” flourished garden ALONE with the palace broken.
This tells you that eren, in this ending, Eren would have killed off everyone, and holds on to Mikasa’s scarf as a memory of her, and the series ends with historia and MAYBE Eren’s child, a newborn Ymir, the first free child. It was the last panel Isayama drew and you can check his Instagram. but obviously the ending was changed for the manga, so eren died and everyone lived, the imagery here and the postulated original “dark ending” would basically show the opposite, where everyone is killed off harshly, for a reborn, free world. As the newborn child is the first free child, Eren is basically all alone as you see in the garden, and the kingdom is over (look inside the palace it’s broken). The cycle is finally broken.

One other beautiful detail in this ending is how Eren never once looks back, and keeps walking forward until the very end. However, when his goal is seemingly achieved he looks back and then fades away. The symbolism in the ending is incredible.

@@Nexol13 spot on, it was even hinted earlier how eren would handle situations with pure anger and psychopath tendencies. Many people seem to forget and it kinda leads into why many dont understand the ending to a extend.
The more accurate translation is actually “Devil Child” which I think is more fitting. Eren was never evil by nature, no one is which is one of the core messages of this series.

@@oyen7899 Imo, it seems more to me that that scene-where eren holds the knife-is symbolizing eren taking on a bigger world as his past makes a huge impact on him. The lyrics, well, they revolve all around the people he loves, however, as you said, a bit more towards mikasa. This ed is basically the answers to mikasa’s questions in the ed from season 1. Which imo, going back and forth through the lyrics, the answers don’t seem to be strictly for mikasa, especially the “you.” This is my opinion though, I just see this ed this way rather than strictly eren’s words for mikasa like most people do.

when eren is in the bird cage , he is surrounded by poppies which symbolise death , eternal sleep and remembrance to fallen soldiers. when he is released from the cage he is stood in a field of wildflowers which commonly symbolise happiness and joy. the scene also heavily features campanula’s which mean everlasting love.
