I'm pretty sure the ending is showing us Mikasa passing on to the afterlife right after she died from the old age. In the beginning we saw her jump into the water and then floating in it surrounded by white cherry blossoms which are often used in funerals in Japan and represent the transience of life, rebirth and a new beginning. We see her floating in the water surrounded by them in the exact same position she was buried in, which signals her passing away and her journey into the afterlife. We then see Mikasa experience a dream state where she sees birds on a fence and right under it we are shown 4 red roses which symbolize "Nothing Will Come Between Us", one of the birds is holding 1 red rose signifying "you're the one and only love". Then we see her and Eren running around being happy and at peace together, leaning into each other and being there for each other. She then holds 2 yellow chrysanthemums shining bright which symbolizes the long life she lived with both sorrow and neglected love in her heart and her closing her hands putting out its light showing that its the moment of her death. The final lyric of the song is "I know I'll see you again, lets say goodnight" as Mikasa opens her eyes in the exact same position as she was buried. Her eyes full of tears thinking its just another dream again but no, she has a surprised expression because she sees Eren is right there with her, holding her hand with a yellow butterfly on his hand which represents rebirth, they're finally reunited in the afterlife free from war and cruelty of this world, together for eternity 😭
You're absolutely right, and to some people the afterlife concept seems vague, and they just say that it's fan service. But at the start, we see paths, which indirectly might mean that they reunite in the paths, and not what we refer to as afterlife. In short, just like Ymir, who still remained in paths after death. So I think Eren and Mikasa reunite in the paths, The afterlife thing is making others say it's fan service lol, but it actually had to happen at some point due to paths. I refer to it as afterlife because my assumption is that there's no "hell" or "heaven" in AOT but simply a place where your soul can finally move on and be free with your loved ones. I'm making that assumption based on the fact that we saw Hange reunite with other dead survey corps members right after she died and we saw the "ghosts" of Sasha, Hange, Erwin and others appearing right in front of other living people to have their last proper goodbye between each other. Which in retrospect is interesting because right after that we see Mikasa meet Ymir the same exact way before she disappears herself. So yeah, for all we know the "afterlife" of AoT world are actually paths your soul moves on to.

1:17 could actually be showing Mikasa waking up in the afterlife and reunited with Eren, who's holding her hand. Look closely and you can see the tears in her eyes, with her hairstyle in a ponytail which is what's shown in the closing scene. The yellow butterfly in the final scene represents the hope of reuniting in the afterlife. The promise of a new life through rebirth is delivered by the yellow butterfly.
also, if you notice the bird carrying a single rose with 4 roses in the foreground in 0:25 its as if eren's response to mikasa's flower when she was visiting erens grave, and the wings of freedom symbolizing the they will be forever free with each other in the afterlife. this ending broke my soul 😭
No anime will ever get close I feel. There aren't enough mature themed anime with same level of story, twists, suspension and charachter development. Some are great, but nowhere near the level of AoT.

I just realised this ending is out-of-order for showing Mikasa reuniting with Eren in the afterlife. 1:17 is right as she passed on and reawakens to see Eren, 1:10 is Eren helping her up and she is shocked to see him, 1:06 is them being excited to see each other and 0:41 is finally them holding hands as they walk off to be in peace My god I’m actually gonna cry
I was genuinely surprised at how I didn’t cry when watching the finale. Looking back I think it was just the shock of everything. Watching this ED did it for me and now I can’t stop. I’m sad for the overlying message of the show, I’m sad for the way things ended with Eren and Mikasa, and most importantly I’m sad it’s over 😭😢

I'm pretty sure the ending is showing us Mikasa passing on to the afterlife right after she died from the old age. In the beginning we saw her jump into the water and then floating in it surrounded by white cherry blossoms which are often used in funerals in Japan and represent the transience of life, rebirth and a new beginning. We see her floating in the water surrounded by them in the exact same position she was buried in, which signals her passing away and her journey into the afterlife.
We then see Mikasa experience a dream state where she sees birds on a fence and right under it we are shown 4 red roses which symbolize "Nothing Will Come Between Us", one of the birds is holding 1 red rose signifying "you're the one and only love". Then we see her and Eren running around being happy and at peace together, leaning into each other and being there for each other. She then holds 2 yellow chrysanthemums shining bright which symbolizes the long life she lived with both sorrow and neglected love in her heart and her closing her hands putting out its light showing that its the moment of her death.
The final lyric of the song is "I know I'll see you again, lets say goodnight" as Mikasa opens her eyes in the exact same position as she was buried. Her eyes full of tears thinking its just another dream again but no, she has a surprised expression because she sees Eren is right there with her, holding her hand with a yellow butterfly on his hand which represents rebirth, they're finally reunited in the afterlife free from war and cruelty of this world, together for eternity 😭
You're absolutely right, and to some people the afterlife concept seems vague, and they just say that it's fan service.
But at the start, we see paths, which indirectly might mean that they reunite in the paths, and not what we refer to as afterlife. In short, just like Ymir, who still remained in paths after death.

I'm making that assumption based on the fact that we saw Hange reunite with other dead survey corps members right after she died and we saw the "ghosts" of Sasha, Hange, Erwin and others appearing right in front of other living people to have their last proper goodbye between each other. Which in retrospect is interesting because right after that we see Mikasa meet Ymir the same exact way before she disappears herself.
So yeah, for all we know the "afterlife" of AoT world are actually paths your soul moves on to.

ちょっと遠慮がちに頭にもたれているのが本当に尊い。胸を掻きむしるくらい苦しくなる。
小さな時はエレンも素直にミカサを思いやっていたんだろうなと思わせてくれる。

1:17 could actually be showing Mikasa waking up in the afterlife and reunited with Eren, who's holding her hand. Look closely and you can see the tears in her eyes, with her hairstyle in a ponytail which is what's shown in the closing scene. The yellow butterfly in the final scene represents the hope of reuniting in the afterlife. The promise of a new life through rebirth is delivered by the yellow butterfly.

I just realised this ending is out-of-order for showing Mikasa reuniting with Eren in the afterlife. 1:17 is right as she passed on and reawakens to see Eren, 1:10 is Eren helping her up and she is shocked to see him, 1:06 is them being excited to see each other and 0:41 is finally them holding hands as they walk off to be in peace

I was genuinely surprised at how I didn’t cry when watching the finale. Looking back I think it was just the shock of everything. Watching this ED did it for me and now I can’t stop. I’m sad for the overlying message of the show, I’m sad for the way things ended with Eren and Mikasa, and most importantly I’m sad it’s over 😭😢

There's just something so beautiful about characters that got separated by death reuniting in the afterlife as children.

But here's why I think ed doesn't mean em reunion
-the Ed is an official song but em reuniting is not a canon event. Yams didn't draw them together in the manga. Em is forever separated by death.
-Mikasa woke up at 1:19 because it's all a dream or hallucination. Yes, she woke up after all that yes, the Ed is in correct order
-Eren killed 80% of human population. A criminal like him does not deserve a happy afterlife with Mikasa.
-The Ed is just a fan service for em shippers
-Mikasa is married. If she dies, she reunites with her husband & not Eren. Check the end credits and we see she has a wedding ring.
-Since when did eds have meaning ? Lmao. It's only artistic choice.
-The guidebook, which will be released some time now, will explicitly say Mikasa married Jean so for now be happy with a lie that Mikasa is with Eren

@@GarkeMangotta move forward now, this show had been my fav anime for 3yrs now that it is over. This is the same feeling I got when I finish a majorly populer show like naruto. Had been 5yrs since I felt this way again. This empty feeling , I guess now ill have to find an anime which can match my expectations like this show did. I doubt that I'll ever find a show like this again
