Matty Harris is a music producer, mixing and mastering engineer from Boston. As a young musician, he won several awards, most notably, the best drummer in New England. He toured with jazz, blues and calypso bands, playing bars and clubs at the young age of 14. After High School, he attended Berklee College of Music where he studied Music Production and Engineering. Learning from some of the most accomplished producers and engineers in the industry. Since then, he has worked on countless records with such artist as; Atlantic Records, RCA Records, WB Records, Kelly Clarkson, Sammy Adams, A$AP Rocky, Logic, Lil Yachty, Cam Meekins, Just Juice, Action Bronson, Danny Brown, Fat Joe, Styles P, La Coka Nostra, and many more. He worked on the Grammy Award-winning song “Stronger” by Kelly Clarkson and won the 2008 Boston Music Award for Best Hip-Hop/R&B Producer. He now lives in Los Angeles where he works with artists from all over the world helping them to realize their dreams.
Matty started his online mixing and mastering company, mixandmastermysong.com, with the vision of helping new artists get the same quality mixes and masters as the major label artists he works with. After realizing the advancements of technology, he knew it was time to launch his online mixing and mastering company when he no longer needed the effects of a “big room” studio to achieve high-end mixing and mastering.

Good stuff. This did freshen and brighten the vocals, added clarity, emphasised a lightness somehow. Also it’s great to do this early on, as close to the source as possible - I once had a booming result on a CD recording, only found by playing on a beatbox/ghetto blaster sat in a corner. I initially tried to fix at the ‘Mastering’ stage, but found I was stacking effect after effect, plug-ins galore, and the end quality was dull. Finally I gave in and sorted it out way back at the mix stage, giving me the brightness back and fixing the issue. So yes, take a look at where all that heavy-duty sound energy is low-down and curb it a little early-on is good advice. Thanks for the tutorial, Pro-Q3 is quite densely made, there’s a lot of subtlety to using it, and this has helped.

Yes Pro Q3 is a powerful and precise EQ, but you don't think it sounds a bit sterile/clinical. I certainly use it to fix n clean stuff up but I'm always looking for something with character when boosting.

Thanks for this wonderful tutorial.Why do you cut off the LF on vocals? I thought you would loose some bass punch which might be great on male voice.Is that a rule of thumb?
Just use your ear. Cut it down till you really notice it. But most of the vocal come from the mid range.

I'm so tired of my vocals sounding amateur and feel like I need to get fabfilter plugins. I know you can achieve similar things with the stock plugins but can someone tell me if fabfilter will make my life easier in getting pleasant vocals? The thing is eventually I will get fabfilter in my life time. Just want someone with experience to tell me to just get it.
