He came on a student visa, he should have regularised his status. Home office is right. Marriage and work doesn't mean you're British. He thought it would go away but sadly it doesn't work that way. There is a reason why he didn't leave the UK all these years

In 1977, I was 8 years old when that Ghanaian gentleman migrated to the UK. It's a shame that gentleman is being denied British citizenship after all of his contributions and accomplishments that he gave to the UK. His son said that his dad is nearly 83.
