Because adultery is a locked gate. Charles opened that gate and did not close it. Allowing Diana to walk through as well. Charles' choices were his own. So were Diana's. Unfortunately, his highness' did not simply affect him. It affected his family, too. And it affected Lady Diana in a really bad way. And because Charles opened that gate and did not close it, everybody else can enter as well. Meaning, he basically approved adultery for the entire world of people who look up to the royal family.
This statement does not just apply to this situation, but to everything that people who are looked up to do.
Choices are tricky things. Opened doors are, too, for that matter.

And yet he goes to the altar and "before god", in whom he believes, he vows to spend the rest of his life with his wife-to-be and at the same time he is already fully commited to break those vows. Now what else does he take so lightly?

The queen apparently didn’t want them to divorce at all, but she granted Charles and Lady Di to divorce a while after the separation.

In actuality, during their first interview when Charles answered, “Whatever in love means,” Diana awkwardly giggled and said, “Yes.” At the time I remember thinking that it was a sham on his part and somebody needed to rescue this young girl who was clueless and didn’t know what to do. They all used Diana and took advantage of her. She eventually grew up, sought help and found her voice.

It's so petty to me as well. After all, Diana was his wife and the Princess...his half. I would've been thrilled the people loved her so. She was suppose to be the future Queen and the mother to a potential future king...
To be a smart person one has to be consciously aware of your own strengths and weaknesses. Charles had a dull personality so Diana complimented him greatly which is why the royal family thought they would be a perfect match.
