My art history professor talked about how the relief was so deep that this emperor was "conquering the space of the viewer". I thought it was Justinian, the great (re)conqueror emperor.

The Louvre also suspects it may be Justinian. Unfortunately, we do not have a definitive identification.

This is Jesus as I've never seen him, what a unique portrayal. I love the detail of this - the horse and its adornments, the clothing and sandals of the warriors.. It's beautiful. Very glad to hear that unfortunately-positioned lady is a personification of plenty rather than someone about to get trampled. 😅

My John Julius Norwich book says probably Anastasius, but tempting to think of Belisarius, Justinian and Narses missing from the right hand side.

Nobody can really tell.Norwich with all respect I have for him does not know more about it than anyone else.If we securely knew Belisarius is really depicted right to the right of Justinian on his famous Ravenna mosaic chance that it is indeed Belisarius and Justinian would massively increased as both bearded men are very similar in look.

I am not sure who made the Barberini ivory.

Iustinian, flancat de Belizarie și Narses. Nu poate fi altul!
