Honestly I feel like byzantine art is under appreciated. I'm glad seeing the amazing videos. Thank you!!

People appreciated it, they just usually group Byzantine with Roman together

@@dalee2419 although that's true I feel like byzantine art is a very niche subject. Even though people know about the monumental expressions of byzantine culture like the Agia sophia or San Vitale, other works of art like the triptych in the video don't get the attention they deserve.

Byzantine art - whether in ivory or mosaics - is stunning. Its architectural influence can certainly be seen in St. Mark's Basilica in Venice. And I believe that outside of Istanbul, the Italian city of Ravenna holds some of the most exquisite examples of Byzantine art and architecture. Thank you for this video - it seems a pity that Byzantine art is not more widely appreciated.

Thank you so much. I like to learn from your videos a lot. And I find the byzantine art is quite underrated sometimes.

This is a beautifully detailed piece, but everyone looks so upset! At least John the Baptist is similarly miserable in this one.. 😅
I love the garden on the back, lots of rich symbolism and a dope inscription I can get behind, lol.

Was there any reason that after iconoclasm there was a need to write the names of the figures being represented? Also, when it was painted were the paints made with precious materials?

Still - if you compare the quality of the carving with ancient Greece, Greeks win. And if you take another look at Ghiberti´s Gates of Paradise, you will tremble with awe. If you have any more footage on Gates of Paradise, please share. Thank you so much for all the great work
