  • NWA DC-9-41 Takeoff from Newark Liberty Airport EWR Runway 22R. If you like JT8Ds, turn it up! Aircraft N755NW operating as Flight 1417 to Detroit Metro DTW. April 1, 2009. Delta has retired the -30/40 from its fleet.

Awesome video and channel. I tried so hard to get the -40 series on my flight back to LAX in December. I pieced together a 4 stop flight out of CMH to get it. After I got to DTW, I was a little late but not bad. I looked at the monitor and my flight to MKE was cancelled :( I got the the gate and saw the -40 being pushed away. That was probably it's last flight. I was redirected on a D9-50 so not bad, but the -40 was the model I needed to "complete the fleet."

The only thing that could make it better would be to hear three JT8D's at the same time ;-)

This is quite an interesting video. It kind of looks like the rain water is going right into that engine! I like when it cuts to the part when it is in the clouds. And the engine sounds are great indeed.

+Lastoria Nostra I concur. Nice video and audio of this legacy plane. NWA did a good job of keeping their fleet of DC-9s going til it merged with Delta. Too bad that they didn't keep a few of the better 9's going. So long, DC-9, so long.

This reminds me of the many trips I took aboard JAT DC-9s in the '80s.

I one was on a dc-9 sitting in a similar seat on takeoff from Jacksonville, FL and was looking at the engine intake at throttle up on takeoff and a condensation cloud formed just in front of the intake. It had just rained about 20 minutes before departure and the temperature and humidity were high which caused the conditions to be perfect.

George lucus used the dc 9 for the engine sound effects for the Millennium Falcon in the Star Wars franchise.

Pratt & Whitney JT-8D = best engine ever in terms of sound! I've always loved the whine they produced. Good stuff.

Ex-SAS? Such a wonderful airplane. I'm really glad i got some flights with SAS DC-9's back in the nineties. Too bad they got rid of them! And now the MD-80's are leaving the fleet too... :(

Correct me if I'm wrong, but was there a change of runway? It looked like you crossed over a runway while taxiing.

  • @aerialpic
    @aerialpic 12 лет назад

The change of focus from raindrops to landscape wasn't intentional. Like many videographers, auto focus was used. The camera wants to focus on the nearest object. Manual focus with lens set to infinity will solve for this issue.

I miss that plane. Enjoyed the sound and the back seat on Northwest from Nashville to Detroit. I prefer that over those narrow cabin Embraers.

Great video. Reminds me of the flights I had on these older planes w/ NW/NWA & US Air. Now discontinued from service in the USA, by Delta. At least Delta/Northwest did a good job in keeping the fleet of these older planes going, fuel inefficiencies and all. A sturdy plane, all-around, vs. Airbus jetliners, IMHO. Not sure if any are in service with charter carriers or not. A goodbye to this legacy jetliner and legacy airline (NW/NWA). So long.

Funny you mention fuel versus the Airbus - one of the reasons Delta kept the DC-9 so long was that, on such short sectors, the amount of fuel you spent to get up was fairly comparable between the two. At climb power, you will consume:
      DC-9 with JT8D-17 - 8300-ish PPH/engine
      A320 - either powerplant - 7300-7900-ish PPH/engine
The difference is certainly there, but not as drastic as in cruise. Bear in mind that, on a flight from, say, Atlanta to Huntsville, the cruise phase of the flight is about five minutes. You start making gains in the Airbus when you start flying longer sectors... drastic gains.

I do believe Delta's replacing these with the 717 leases from Southwest. Probably a good thing too...beautiful as they sound, the DC-9 can only do about 800 miles on a full tank. The 717 can do nearly 2400 miles.

Sadly once an airline is brave enough to retire an aircraft type, every other airline hops on the trend. For example the A380, 747-400, and 757. As well as MD80 and DC9.
