The first time I learned this story behind this beautiful hymn, my husband had just lost his job and we lost our home, and possessions were repossessed, and my husband of 25 years was saying he was going to leave the state and leave me and the children behind, my sorrows were rolling like sea billows, and I thought of Horatio praising the Lord after all of his losses, and I praised the Lord, and my sorrows were nailed to the Cross, and I bore them no more, and it became well with my soul, and I felt the presence and peace of the Lord in my soul, and the Lord took care of me and my family. Now, 8 years later, my troubles, like sea billows are rolling once again - I now have cancer, and I immediately have sang and prayed - it is nailed to the cross and I bear it no more, praise the Lord, praise the Lord O my soul. It IS well with my soul, and the Lord is keeping me safe in the Palm of His Hand, and as far as those troubles like sea billows, let 'em roll, God's got this, and I praise him for his loving kindness and his mercy. Many good things have come from mmy cancer journey, many blessings, many good new friends, and I, yes I have been able 2 pass it on and help and pray 4 others who have been diagnosed after me. God has taught me that each day that my feet hit the floor and open my eyes in the morning, is a GIFT, not something I am owed - it is a true gift from God, a GIFT to be shared, Praise the Lord, O my soul. "See now that I, even I, am he, and there is no god beside me; I KILL and I make alive; I WOUND and I heal; and there is none that can deliver out of my hand." Deuteronomy 32:39 - Knowing that He causes ALL things(even cancer) to happen for our(Believers) good; just amazes me. Even Satan must go to God for permission, like in the book of Job. It's just amazing how awesome and powerful our God is!

Horatio Spafford....trials of Job...I've had a rough life, wouldn't wish it on anybody, but had my son and four daughters been taken from me like this, I think it would have broken me. What a man of faith...

The original lyrics by Spafford were, "...whatever my lot, thou has taught me to know..." Contemporary transcribers changed the word "know" to "say." Anyone can say, but it's the believer in Christ who knows. Praise God for such faith as Horatio Stafford's.

Wow, out of such tragedy came this beautiful hymn. It brought tears to my eyes. This is the hope that we have in Christ. For one we will see Jesus and all the cares of this world will fade away. Glory oh what a day that will be.

I never knew the story behind the song, but that story is very moving. A story likened to Job all over again. Now that's faith. It encourages me more than I can say.
On 26 July 2020, my wife and my daughter pass away because of Covid-19 on our 1st wedding anniversary.
God has a great plan for us. And I know they are happy in heaven now. This song make me strong to face the future with God.

Incredible story! We just sang this song in worship this morning. I don't think I'll ever sing it again without thinking about this back story. I don't know how he could write such a beautiful song after losing so much in his life.

This is one of my most favorite hymns. The version here is one of the best I have heard because it comes across as worship and not performance. It constantly reminds me that my lot in life is not bad at all. It also has significant meaning in my family because it was sung in 1980 at my 13 year old brother's funeral. That was the first time I remember hearing it. This may sound strange but it made that funeral an actual glorious event because he was saved on Monday at Nora Lam meeting and died on Saturday. Our family was comforted, and given that peace that passes all understanding, because we all knew that all was well with his soul.

Oh, how I wish that the hymns of today would be like the old beautiful hymns of yesteryear.
Today's hymns are one stanza that is repeated over and over, but when I hear these old hymns they still grip my heart.
I don't believe that we as Christians are dedicated to the LORD like folks were a hundred years ago, the church has one foot in the world and one in church, the bible tells us that we can not serve two masters, we either serve one or the other.

Horacio is like Job, through none of his fault, catastrophic events happened in his life. Instead of becoming bitter & curse God, he pinned this song & encouraged all of us down the generations after him who choose to stay with God, thank God & love God, instead of cursing Him for all the misfortunes that naturally happen in life.

It is well with my soul is wonderful song. I have seen the clips of Job's suffering in this song. It is not easy to say " it is well with my soul"; when the beloved one are killed due to natural disaster. No secular poetry can tell such a living faith to any community. It is pinnacle of Christian faith. May God use more tools to glorify His name, the Kingdom of God come in our hearts and on this earth.
Over the years I've lost husband, home, job, health and friends, now fighting against terminal cancer with God's help; but the deep love of my precious Saviour&LordJESUS, His daily"sufficient grace", His"Perfect Peace" and Eternal Hope for all who believe in Him has held me together..Only JESUS can do this for me and for you....

Each of these Hymns have sermons as backstories. Doing research as to why the new, modern Rock and Roll "Christian Music" does nothing, yet Hymns truly move me, I think I have my answer.
So true! Now-a-days worship leaders say things like "Ok church, we are going to learn a new song; I wrote it on the way to church today."
On RUclips look up "Christian Berdahl" and watch the "distraction dilemma".... it's about the history of music from its onset centuries ago to present day, He also discusses the power of music alone "without words" and of course with words. If you have a true interest in the way in which music should be played and how it affects our brain chemistry, moods and emotions, you'll want to watch this. He is very Dynamic and I guarantee you this is not boring.
