This song means so much to our Family. You see my husband & I buried our son after he was born He lived a brief 5 hours. We sang this song at his funeral. In 2009 I lost my husband of 32 years of marriage in a farming accident. We sang this song at his funeral. He was 52. 3 months after my husband passed I lost one of my 4 girls in a car accident. We sang this song at her funeral. She was 23. It might not be ok & this might be bad BUT IT IS WELL WITH MY SOUL...........
+gogatorsandeagles, What kind of moron are you? Her husband was 52 years old when he died in 2009. They had been married for 32 years when he died, which means he was 20 when they married. Why is that so hard for you to comprehend? Your comment ranks up there with the most ignorant I have ever read on RUclips. Do you write such ignorant things just to get attention?
This song has been continue to use at my Church. This is one of songs that my Dad loves to listen to. He was in Air Force for 14 years then became businessman of Dandy Cleaners & Laundry in Charlotte, NC for many years and passed the business over to my brother, Larry. My Dad passed away this past June 25, 2018 due to MSRA. He struggled for 5 weeks in the hospital then went home to be with Jesus Christ. We used this song, "It is Well With My Soul" at his awakening service. I miss my Daddy so much and do looking forward the day we will meet again. Glory to God... Amen...
last July 5, I was assigned to lead the congregation for praise and worship. As a worship leader I have to choose songs and this is what God put in my heart. Before the church service I searched for the story behind this beautiful song and I wept a lot to God when I heard this beautiful testimony. I remember the life of Job and this testimony helped me to be more zealous on the church service that night! God bless everyone!
So many of the new churches have opted out of playing traditional hymns. I guess they want a more "lively", contemporary feel to their services....but I think they are wrong to do that. These are testimonies set to music, and should be treasures to all who profess to love the Lord.
Ma Boots, Thank you. These _are_ incredible testimonies. They should not be forgotten but sang in worship to testify God's unending faithfulness & love during the unimaginable. Thank you Father, one day we will all be together for eternity; no more sorrow or tears.
I agree with you. In my church, we still play this song. It's in Bataknese. It sounds incredible traditionally. I was born in a village so i think traditional religion songs shouldn't be distincted. Love you All, GBU
I have always loved this song from the first time I heard it. Knowing it's history causes me to love it more! What great faith Mr. Spafford had to feel and have to write such words!!
If only each of us would look deep in to our own soul and figure out what we can do to make all well within. I smile thinking about what that does for me! Restoration. Acceptance. Forgiveness. The Lord's love. It gives me a new perspective at this point in my life, to look back at where I've come from...and I wish (no, pray!) it does for you. On THIS day, January 25, 2015, it IS well with my soul. Thank you, Horatio Spafford, for continuing to live on in the hearts and minds of others whom live and learn to reflect on your profound words.
i feel so blessed to hear this song. It has been interpreted into many languanges including in Bataknese languange (Dung sonang rohakku), Indonesia. I also say so thankful to God for Choosing Nort Sumatera especially Bataknese to be Christians. Now i know who my creator is and to whom i should return when i pass away. I believe in Jesus as Son of God 100%. I don't want if God takes it of me. I become Stronger because of my faith in Christ. I love You Jesus, please take me, Mom & Daddy, Sisters and brother all of my family members. My favourite boy, his Mom and Daddy, all of his family members, Our friends and the people who hate us. Amen
When i heard story behind this hymn i cried... How the Pioneers stood faith in LORD JESUS .... and i feel at the moment i am totally waste in sight of GOD....
I've yet to suffered such tragedies in my life, fortunately every member of my family that I've ever personally known are still alive, but I have been drawn to the beauty and sentimental nature of this song. It's eternal in it's pure form. As morbid as it may be, sometimes blessings are come from the darkest places like a Lotus that rises out of the murky waters.
Oh my! You KNOW this man suffered, but still found he could love his Lord!! What tragedies, but what an inspiration to hundreds of thousands of us who love his song!
Yes,....I believe he realized when he reached that spot where he lost his daughters.....He knew that they were safe... in God's Presence., now in Heaven. It was through this tragedy.......(As the father of his children,...the Lord )...inspired this tremendous song to give him and his wife,..."peace like a river!"
No Matter the challenge we need to be strong just like horassio Spafford and same like job,am so blessed by this song and I believe the bigger the challenge the more we are strong,God will always provide a way out,and it is well in Jesus Christ
What a powerful testimony and he's faith and trust in our Lord Yeshua and the words he wrote in worship have lifted many souls in times of loss, darkness and sadness, talk about God using a testimony to touch so many lives throughout time. I hope to meet and tell him in heaven, but not for a very very long time, just how much his worship song has helped me keepmy faith and trust in my life.
Thanks you so so much, for telling this story again, He was who covenant man with God, as he is with the Lord till today, ND We've been given a faith, love that he had with God ,as lesson to us
Praying for the families of Yvalde. May God bring them His comforter. Knowing that they will see their loved ones again and say that it is well with my soul.
I knew about the daughters and him writing the hymn over where they thought the ship sank - I didn't know about his son dying and his property being burned down - Oh my! Oh to have faith like him and be able to say, after all that - it is well with my soul - although it is true! Romans 8:35-39 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? As it is written: “For Your sake we are killed all day long; We are accounted as sheep for the slaughter.” Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us. For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
when I put myself in his place............. well..... I'm not sure I can imagine doing what he did....but I realize he knew he would see his children again...and they would be well......
Pensive mood dominated over my emotional expressions and I'm being surrounded by an atmosphere of melancholy as well after watching this video. Can't cease the tearing down my cheek, God save us all
Horatio Spafford, and his wife had an experience very similar to Job of the Old Testament. His attitude was like that of Job: Job 1:21 NIVand said: “Naked I came from my mother's womb, and naked I will depart. The Lord gave and the Lord has taken away; may the name of the Lord be praised.”
I feel bad for all of the people who don't know Jesus. Please forgive them for they know not what they are doing. O Lord you are very great and should be praised.
I have to correct the post...I am Laura Moss-Weltz. My son, Wyatt Moss, has no idea this just posted under his name. Too funny that I can't figure out how to change technical problems either!
Kinda reminds me of this one story in the bible where the devil and God argued and the devil said that the only reason people worship God is because they are happy and that if they had loss or sadness they would forsake God and God proved the devil wrong by taking a lot away from one of his disciples and even after all the loss the man remained faithful.
Were you the one who made this video? It's a very inspiring video and the piano music is powerful. It's the best variant of the song I've heard. Did you compose the version of the piece? Can you send me a copy of the song and the sheet music if available? Thanks. My email is: whileloops@gmail.com
+MrWhileloops Yes, I did. Thank you. I just played it by ear. It's a variation of another version of the song I heard once on the radio. I have never been able to find it again after I heard it :( if I do, I'll be sure to send it to you!
The facts are a bit mixed up in the story's cronologie. The 4 years old son lost to scarlet fever, was actually born one year AFTER the loss of their 4 daughters - in 1873. Spafford and his wife also had 2 daughters born in their later years.
I keep reading about this son that died before the Fire/shipwreck but I can't seem to find any info on him other than that he died from Scarlet Fever when he was four. He's not showing up on any censuses and I can't seem to find a birth record. Do we know his name? (I ask because I'm writing a story about these events.)
Judgement as 'hungjur' was upheld for lack of evidence causing a riot indeed in city of Chicago, Presiding Chief of Justice Mr. Horatio Spattford without a call; left his Chicago courthouse and judge's chamber still vacant, decided to take his family to France, Nation where parents were originally from. Jaishoon Couplar
Great lyrics but the truth is that it was not well with his soul. Horacio Spafford started strong as a presbyterian but did not finish well. He denied Hell, and he had a very unbiblical view of the local church. He called it Babylon. He was an early Harold Camping. Started a cult basically to separate from evangelicalism. That’s the saddest thing to me. How can someone write such amazing lyrics and then depart like he did.
Wow...that is so horrible and tragic. I knew about him claiming to be Christ himself when he was on his deathbed due to Malaria I think but I didn't know about that info.

Johnnie Marshall God Bless you Johnnie, for your faith and steadfastness in the midst of such loss.
+Johnnie Marshall God be with you.... U r His Testimony
GOD BLESS YOU!
+Johnnie Marshall Why do you and so many people make up these stories to get attention your husband would not be 52 if he died in 2009

I truly believe that the traditional hymns are much more beautiful. I hope more Christians will urge churches to play them!
Ma Boots, Thank you. These _are_ incredible testimonies. They should not be forgotten but sang in worship to testify God's unending faithfulness & love during the unimaginable. Thank you Father, one day we will all be together for eternity; no more sorrow or tears.
There is a contemporary artists (Hillsong & Bethel Music) that has revived the song and it is sung in churches who have contemporary Christian music.
I agree with you. In my church, we still play this song. It's in Bataknese. It sounds incredible traditionally. I was born in a village so i think traditional religion songs shouldn't be distincted. Love you All, GBU
I definitely agree, god's words never change
I'm so much blessed that despite of the many trials that overwhelmed us
, a christian could still shout, "It is well with my soul"!
So much sorrow in this world, cling to know ,this world is not our home.
Father it is well with my soul when you are in my life ,forgive me jesus
Whenever I get dirt or something in my eyes I'll come watch this and it washes it right out.
WHAT AN AMAZING STORY.. THIS PUTS LIFE INTO PROSPECTIVE WHEN YOU THINK YOU ARE HAVING A BAD DAY OR LIFE. IT IS WELL WITH MY SOUL.
I love the old hymns. I was singing IT IS WELL with my soul this morning.
I have always loved this song from the first time I heard it. Knowing it's history causes me to love it more! What great faith Mr. Spafford had to feel and have to write such words!!
An inspiring and heart-breaking story. For everything, God has a purpose.

I lost my baby ,i can't wait to see her again
Mauricio Lezama Sorry for your loss but at least you know that you will one day see her again. God bless you.
fantasma del tren, my condolences. Our babies are playing together in heaven. 💕💕
this song always brings me to tears knowing why mr. spafford wrote. and i take refuge knowing he was reunited with them in glory.
This glorious song never ceases to comfort and inspire me. Long may we hear good Gospel music in the Church.
When i heard story behind this hymn i cried...

you're not a waste in God's sight. He loves you so dearly as a son and embraces you with so much joy

Thanks for the story. This brings deep meaning to that specific phrase, "when sorrows like sea billows roll".

It is well with my soul powerful indeed.
Pensive mood dominated over my emotional expressions and I'm being surrounded by an atmosphere of melancholy as well after watching this video. Can't cease the tearing down my cheek, God save us all
It's is so great,The story and the song. This song is the most important in evangelist.Have faith in God..
Reminds me that even with Covid-19, It is well with my soul!
this is one of my favorite
I LOVE this song...
What an amazing faith he had...
My husband of 10 years left me and our autism child whom it took us 6 years of infertility before we got pregnant. IT IS WELL WITH MY SOUL.
Thank you.
I feel bad for all of the people who don't know Jesus. Please forgive them for they know not what they are doing. O Lord you are very great and should be praised.
I love that song
Take my life Jesus and all will be well 🙏
For someone to confess like that in such trials!!!!! Hmmm it is by the spirit of God that lives in all who have faith in God.
It is supernatural courage to all of us
"Then Sing My Soul".
Overcoming men's greatest fear.
I"m reminded of the story of Job
Always encouraged by his story. Much pain in his life and yet....! But God..!
(BTW "Ville de Havre" = "Haven City"!)
It is well with my soul and I think all is well...
Oh horatio!
Wow.

There is a reason for everything
Good job

Poor guy. Music is something even extremely bad luck can't take away. Even better is music and life going one's way.
Is it well with your soul? Cause he's coming one day soon.
the narrator is reading the google search result of "horatio spafford it is well story" from wikipedia.
Please allow me to do a translation from this, it would be helpful to my kids.
"Then Sing My Soul"
This is a great video. Can I have permission to use in a church service?
What’s the piano playing here as background? Does anyone knows? Please lmk
Reminds me of Job in the Bible.
Christ is enough.
It takes God.
Where can I download the audio to this to use at a youth church meeting tomorrow? We will not have internet access. Thank you, god bless.
If your still searching look for RUclips to mp3
Where can I find your book about this song or your book
Hi, can I have permission to show this in our church outreach please.
What's the piano arrangement album or artist in the background music?
I just played the keyboard in the background. :)

+MrWhileloops Found it! Sarah Groves did a version that I used as the basis for the soundtrack. Best version I've ever heard of the song!

It is like Jacob’s story

He wrote it in Chicago some time later, not on the ship. Stop making stuff up.
