Hate to spoil the song for you but Horatio Spafford was a dishonest business man and an end times cult leader who took his congregation to Israel to await the second coming, made up prophecies to keep them submissive and had final say in how families operated. You can’t say losing his daughters in the shipwreck made him this way; people make choices.

I've yet to suffered such tragedies in my life, fortunately every member of my family that I've ever personally known are still alive, but I have been drawn to the beauty and sentimental nature of this song. It's eternal in it's pure form. As morbid as it may be, sometimes blessings are come from the darkest places like a Lotus that rises out of the murky waters.

I knew about the daughters and him writing the hymn over where they thought the ship sank - I didn't know about his son dying and his property being burned down - Oh my! Oh to have faith like him and be able to say, after all that - it is well with my soul - although it is true! Romans 8:35-39 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? As it is written: “For Your sake we are killed all day long; We are accounted as sheep for the slaughter.” Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us. I'm so much blessed that despite of the many trials that overwhelmed us , a christian could still shout, "It is well with my soul"!

Great lyrics but the truth is that it was not well with his soul. Horacio Spafford started strong as a presbyterian but did not finish well. He denied Hell, and he had a very unbiblical view of the local church. He called it Babylon. He was an early Harold Camping. Started a cult basically to separate from evangelicalism. That’s the saddest thing to me. How can someone write such amazing lyrics and then depart like he did.

Kinda reminds me of this one story in the bible where the devil and God argued and the devil said that the only reason people worship God is because they are happy and that if they had loss or sadness they would forsake God and God proved the devil wrong by taking a lot away from one of his disciples and even after all the loss the man remained faithful.

i feel so blessed to hear this song. It has been interpreted into many languanges including in Bataknese languange (Dung sonang rohakku), Indonesia. I also say so thankful to God for Choosing Nort Sumatera especially Bataknese to be Christians. Now i know who my creator is and to whom i should return when i pass away. I believe in Jesus as Son of God 100%. I don't want if God takes it of me. I become Stronger because of my faith in Christ. This song has been continue to use at my Church. This is one of songs that my Dad loves to listen to. He was in Air Force for 14 years then became businessman of Dandy Cleaners & Laundry in Charlotte, NC for many years and passed the business over to my brother, Larry. My Dad passed away this past June 25, 2018 due to MSRA. He struggled for 5 weeks in the hospital then went home to be with Jesus Christ. We used this song, "It is Well With My Soul" at his awakening service. I miss my Daddy so much and do looking forward the day we will meet again. Glory to God... Amen...
